Lysander had never shown such interest in any woman before.
Thalassa was indeed mad at Ethan for using her, but his sincere apology somewhat mitigated her anger.
Without another word, she turned and left the office.
Upon her return to the secretaryâs office, Betty immediately approached her, asking, âSo, what did Mr.
Ethan say to you?â
Still upset, Thalassa began to realize how much of a scoundrel Ethan was, and his friend Lysander was no better.
None of them are good people.
Angrily, she retorted, âWhat does it matter what he said about me? I hope all his future business deals fall through, his coffeeâs always too hot, and he trips even on flat ground.â
Betty was speechless.
She admired Thalassa for having the courage to curse their boss and silently gave her a thumbs-up.
âAchoo!â Ethan, who was working in his office, suddenly sneezed.
âAm I catching a cold, or am I about to get a fever?â He wondered while rubbing his nose. He felt his forehead and found no fever. âSomeone must be cursing me.â
Ethan shook his head with a chuckle after thinking of who it could be.
In the afternoon, it was time to clock out.
When Thalassa returned home and opened the door, she found a figure sitting on her couch.
At first, she was startled. Her body was on high alert, thinking a stranger had entered her home.
But when the person turned around, she saw that it was Evelyn. Thalassaâs eyes lit up with joy. âMom, youâre back!â
She quickly went over to sit by Evelyn on the couch, looking at her excitedly and worriedly.
Evelyn looked a bit tired, but overall, she was in good spirits.
Nodding, she said, âIâm back.â
Thalassa held her shoulder and examined her. âAre you hurt anywhere? They didnât harm you, did they?â
Evelyn replied weakly, âNo. I just couldnât stomach the food there, so Iâm very hungry.â
âIâll cook right away.â Thalassa hurriedly stood up and went into the kitchen to prepare dinner.
She cooked two dishes. One was soup, and the other was accompanied by rice that was ready in half an hour.
They sat down at the dining table, chatting while eating.
âMom, how come youâre suddenly back? Have you been temporarily released, or is it all over?â
Thalassa was curious. She had been struggling to think of a way to prove Evelynâs innocence.
âThey said that after investigating, they found that I had been wronged and let me go. Thalassa, youâve been through a lot.â The usually strong-willed Evelyn seemed to have had an epiphany and began speaking to her daughter with deep gratitude.
Thalassa paused with her fork in her hand, a little confused about what was happening.
Just yesterday, she had asked Captain Payne for help, but he had refused.
She hadnât come up with a better way to find evidence to prove Evelynâs innocence.
What was going on?
Had Captain Payne secretly investigated again?
But why would he suddenly meddle in?
Could it have been Lysander?
Did Lysander ask Captain Payne to investigate?
It wasnât impossible. Last night, Lysander met with Captain Payne, and they even had a chat in the break room.
Thalassaâs hand holding the fork stiffened, and there was a strange feeling in her heart.
âStop spacing out and eat.â Evelyn added more food to Thalassaâs plate. âWhen can we go see the kids? I miss them.â
The longing in Evelynâs voice was unmistakable.
