With those words, he swiftly turned and went out.
As Hertha watched his hurried figure receding, a bitter taste spread in her heart. It was a feeling of resentment and disappointment.
Sure, she had won over Georgia, but Alaric hadnât acknowledged a relationship with her. In the end, she was nothing more than a shield for him to reject Georgia.
âDonât beat yourself up. You were amazing just now. I wish I had your fierce spirit,â Thalassa said, having witnessed the whole thing between Hertha and Georgia.
Thalassa had been ready to step in and help Hertha, but seeing how well Hertha handled the situation, she decided to simply observe, ready to jump in if needed.
Hertha truly was awesome. She didnât need anyoneâs help.
Thalassa felt invigorated just watching Hertha.
Startled from her thoughts, Hertha turned to Thalassa with her big and round eyes filled with melancholy, and asked, âDo you think Alaric would ever like me?â
âHe didnât reject you, did he?â Thalassa responded.
Herthaâs eyes lit up at that, her spirits lifted. âYouâre right, he didnât reject me. Thatâs the best start I could hope for! Thereâs a chance he might accept me. Thalassa, youâre my lucky charm, cheering me up.â
In her joy, Hertha playfully pinched Thalassaâs cheek.
Thalassa quickly removed Herthaâs hand. âGood thing I didnât put on makeup, or youâd have smeared it all over!â
âYouâre already so beautiful without makeup. How can others live if you put it on?â Hertha joked.
âOh, by the way, how did your talk with Captain Payne go?â Hertha asked, having been too busy with her own battle to pay attention to Thalassa.
Thalassa shook her head and said, âLysander showed up. He and Captain Payne are good friends.â
Hertha was dumbstruck. It meant Thalassaâs efforts were in vain.
She patted Thalassaâs shoulder, comforting her, âItâs alright; weâll find another way.â
âWe should go. If Lysander sees me here when he comes out, heâll get mad. I donât want to drag you into this.â Thalassa suggested.
âIâm not afraid of getting involved. I just donât want him to bully you. Letâs go,â Hertha grabbed Thalassaâs hand and quickly left the venue.
She came today for Alaric. Now that he was gone, there was no reason for her to stay.
In the lounge, Lysander and Payne sat face to face. Payne sipped his coffee leisurely. âA child under five canât testify in court. But a childâs words arenât without reason. Lysander. whatâs your take?â
A childâs words couldnât be used as evidence. But there was no smoke without fire. There had to be a basis for what they said.
Lysander paused, looking deeply at Payne. âThatâs why I wanted to talk to you.â
âOh? Youâve noticed the peculiarities too?â Payne asked.
âMy grandfather refuses to accept the investigation. He trusts Robert, as heâs been working at the Sinclairâs house for over a decade. Heâs diligent and honest, and hasnât made any mistakes in all these years,â Lysander explained.
âItâs easy. Just investigate without your grandfatherâs knowledge,â Payne suggested, âI agree with what Ms. Everhart said. Only by finding the true culprit behind Sybilâs death can we truly rest her spirit.
Otherwise, not only will an innocent person be blamed, but Sybilâs soul wonât rest in peace.â
