Georgia was not one to be outdone. She rose and retorted to Hertha, âYouâre the one whoâs full of herself! Do you think losing some weight and wearing a cheap dress makes you worthy of Alaric? Iâm his match. Weâre both from reputable families and equally attractive. Weâre the perfect match!â
âYouâre full of crap!â Hertha retorted confidently with her waist crossed, âLook at you, so skinny! Do you think a few jewelries and expensive clothes can salvage your grace? Youâre so frail youâre practically a skeleton! What man would want you? Men prefer women like me, slim but with a bit to hold onto!â
Georgia was left speechless, her chest heaving with fury. No one had ever pinpointed her insecurities so accurately before.
And because those were her insecurities, it stung all the more when they were laid bare. She was left angry and helpless.
Georgia pointed a trembling finger at Hertha, unable to say a single word.
Hertha held her head high, confronting Georgia with an air of defiance.
Meanwhile, Alaric sat in his seat with a faint smile as he watched the two women argue. His eyes never left Hertha.
Both women were arguing over him, fighting for his attention. It was quite flattering and a testament to his charm.
Seeing that she couldnât win the argument, Georgia clung to Alaricâs arm, attempting to pull him up as she whined, âMr. Falconer, stand up and say something. Tell her that Iâm your fiancée and sheâs just a home-wrecker!â
Hertha looked at Alaric anxiously, her round eyes filled with trepidation.
She had won over Georgia, but if Alaric were to confirm his engagement with Georgia, her victory would come crashing down.
Alaric, however, broke Georgiaâs fingers off his arm. His eyes twinkled mischievously as he said, âLetâs get one thing straight. Stop parading around as my fiancée. Iâm not engaged to you, and I have no intention of marrying you.â
Upon hearing Alaricâs words, Herthaâs heart nearly soared with joy. Her eyes shone with happiness.
Georgia was on the verge of tears. âThen why did you agree to bring me here and accompany me all this while?â
âYour father practically handed you over to me, expecting me to take good care of you and to ensure your safe return. Though I didnât agree with any of it, itâs a manâs duty to protect women. Donât you understand?â Alaric replied.
Left stunned, Georgia began to sob like a child, drawing the attention of those around them.
Alaric, fearing the embarrassment, whispered to Georgia, âStop crying. Youâre not a child anymore.
Have some dignity.â
Georgia, however, clung onto Alaric again, petulantly declaring, âI donât care. I want to cry. Youâre mine, and only mine!â
Hertha wasnât happy about it. She stepped forward, pulled Georgiaâs hand away from Alaric, and hid him behind her. âHeâs the man Iâve chosen. Heâs mine, and only mine! Donât get it twisted!â
âYouâ¦â
1 âJust go back to being your little daddyâs girl. Goodbye and take care,â Hertha said with a triumphant grin.
Georgia stomped her foot in frustration and ran out of the venue, crying.
Alaric, however, was concerned and attempted to go after her.
Hertha held him back. âWhere do you think youâre going?â
Alaricâs handsome face turned serious as he shrugged off Herthaâs hand. âEnough games. I promised her father Iâd see her home safe.â
