The bond between a mother and her children could never be replaced.
Faye stepped out of the hospital room, and, in an instant, her sympathetic gaze turned fierce. She shot a glance back at the room before strutting off in her high heels.
âEvelyn, even an outsider feels sorry for Thalassa. As her parents, we must help her.â Bruce seized the moment, gently tugging on Evelynâs sleeve to bring her back to reality.
âAnd how do we do that? What can I possibly do?â Evelyn sighed heavily.
âI think Faye has a point. If Lysanderâs grandparents agree, Thalassa has a better chance of marrying Lysander,â Bruce suggested.
âThen I will marry you, giving Thalassa a complete family. With me as her legitimate father, Lysander will think twice. He will marry Thalassa.â
Bruce was emphatic in his assurance.
Evelynâs gaze dropped. She was half-believing and half-doubting him, flinging herself deep into thought.
âYou rest. Iâm heading back, or Thalassa will worry.â Evelyn told Bruce tiredly.
âAlright, head home. Donât let the child worry.â Bruce spoke with the tone of a loving father.
When Evelyn got home, Thalassa had cooked up a couple of dishes.
âMom, you havenât eaten, have you? I just finished cooking. Eat while itâs hot.â Thalassa approached, guiding her to sit at the dining table.
Evelyn held her bowl, eating absentmindedly.
Noticing her momâs distant state, Thalassa asked, âMom, whatâs wrong? Did Bruce give you a hard time again? I wish he wasnât my dad.â
If Bruce wasnât her father, Lysander wouldnât hate her so much.
After hearing her daughterâs complaint, Evelynâs hand, which was holding the bowl, trembled slightly.
She scolded Thalassa. âDonât talk nonsense!â
Thalassa froze after seeing Evelynâs darkened expression and the seriousness of her tone. She sighed in resignation. âOkay, Iâll stop talking. Just eat.â
Evelyn took another spoonful of soup, but her appetite was absent. Finally, she asked, âDid you really return the billion dollars to Lysander?â
Thalassa nodded. âYeah.â
Last night, Lysander returned the card to her, but she didnât take it. When she woke up in the morning, the card was gone. She guessed that Lysander had probably taken it back.
âOh, you silly girl!â Evelyn sighed in desperation.
âMom, keep eating. Iâll go take a shower.â Thalassa didnât want to discuss this any further.
She had already explained to Evelyn that it wasnât her money, so she couldnât take it. Besides, Lysander had said that the billion dollars were to end her and the kidsâ relationship, which made her even more unwilling to accept it.
Thalassa headed to the bathroom.
After a few bites, Evelyn completely lost her appetite. She sat on the couch, lost in thought, and noticed Thalassaâs backpack on the couch.
A sudden idea flashed in her mind, and she began to search Thalassaâs backpack.
She found a bank card in the front pocket.
Evelyn pulled out the card, recognizing it as the one Thalassa always kept in her drawer.
She had seen Atticus with it before.
Could it be that the billion dollars were transferred to this card?
