Thalassa hailed a cab and made her way to the prestigious Royal Estates.
Security was tight at the gates. Two guards stood watch.
Thalassa, as she always had, intended to walk right in. She aimed to appear casual, to exude an air of belonging.
But when she reached the entrance, she was stopped by the guards.
âYou canât go in,â one stated.
Thalassa halted, raising her chin defiantly. âDo you know who I am? Iâm a friend of your boss, Lysander.
He has always allowed me free access. He wonât be happy if he finds out youâve stopped me.â
âMs. Everhart,â the guard replied politely yet firmly, âIâm sorry, but Lysander has ordered that you are not to enter.â
Thalassaâs feigned bravado diminished. It was clear the guards knew who she was and wouldnât be fooled.
But she missed her children terribly.
âI understand,â she said, her tone pleading. âYouâre just doing your job. But itâs urgent that I get inside.
Could you at least inform him that Iâm waiting here? Perhaps he might be willing to see me today.â
The guard seemed hesitant.
Thalassa gave him a pitiful look that tugged at his heartstrings. Seeing her understanding of his position, he agreed to pass along the message.
Inside the Royal Estates, in the living room, three little ones sat on one side of the dining table. An array of delicious cuisines lay before them. Elowen was drooling, but her siblings were not eating.
Much as she yearned for the food, she decided to stand united with her siblings this time.
Dorian, his cheeks puffed out, stared defiantly at Lysander with his adorable eyes. Sophia sat head bowed, shooting occasional timid glances at Lysander.
Lysander looked back at his three little opponents, and his gaze was stern and unyielding.
The atmosphere at the table was tense and silent. It was a standoff, with tension hanging thick in the air.â
Lysander was at a loss. He had promised them whatever they wanted if they did as they were told.
They had obediently come downstairs, but their defiance resumed soon after.
Those little ones were cute and soft, but also impressively stubborn and headstrong. They seemed determined to oppose him at all costs.
Fitch stood to one side, sweating profusely. He had never seen anyone dare to defy Lysander like that.â
Just as the standoff reached a boiling point, a guard walked in. His respectful report broke the silence.
âLysander, Ms. Everhart is outside. She wishes to see you.â
âMomâs here!â Dorianâs eyes lit up, and his previously sulky face split into a wide grin. He scrambled down from the table and ran towards the door.
Elowen and Sophia followed suit, scrambling down from their chairs and rushing after Dorian.
They were stopped at the door by a bodyguard.
âLet us go. We want to see our mom!â Dorian commanded, his little hands on his hips, looking fiercely adorable.
âWe want to see mom!â Sophia pouted, looking up at the towering bodyguards with her chubby cheeks puffed out, looking irresistibly cute.
