The more Hertha talked, the more Thalassa blushed, her cheeks turning red like ripe apples.
Hertha, the rascal, was bold and blunt. She could talk about anything and everything without a hint of hesitation.
Her words unconsciously conjured up images in Thalassaâs mind, scenes from last night when Lysander had left her breathless and exhausted.
Her face reddened, and she chastised, âHertha, can you stop messing around? Weâre having a serious conversation here!â
Thalassa rolled her eyes and shifted in her seat on the couch, clearly exasperated with her friendâs antics.
âAlright, alright, Iâll stop laughing,â Hertha promised, pursing her lips in an attempt to suppress her laughter. But it was no use, and her shoulders were shaking uncontrollably from her silent giggles.
Thalassa simply stared at her.
Hertha knew she was being ridiculous, but she just couldnât help herself.
Clearing her throat, she mimicked a classic yoga pose, taking deep breaths in and out.
Once she had managed to rein in her laughter, she turned to Thalassa with a solemn expression.
âLook, youâve got nothing to be upset about. Think about it, youâve got Lysander, a man whoâs as handsome as a Hollywood star and built like a Greek god. I canât even sleep thinking about him. You should be celebrating, not sulking.â
As she finished her little pep talk, Hertha gave Thalassa a comforting pat on the shoulder.
âThen why donât you take him?â Thalassa retorted with a dismissive wave of her hand.
âYou think I havenât tried? The man wonât even give me a second glance,â Hertha replied, her face turning a shade of pink.
Thalassa buried her face in her hands, âThatâs not the point, Hertha. Iâm worried about how he knew I didnât go home or that I met with Leopold. Heâs too smart. Iâm scared that heâll find out about our secret.â
âWell, if he does find out, you can always discuss custody and child support. Heâs loaded. Itâs only right that he helps out,â Hertha suggested.
âBut what if he tries to take my babies away from me? Heâs so domineering and ruthless. Plus, he knows Iâm Bruceâs daughter, and he canât stand me,â Thalassa admitted her voice barely a whisper.
Hertha thought for a moment before nodding in agreement. âYouâre right, and we need to find a way to keep your kids safe from Lysander.â
The two women wracked their brains but couldnât come up with a solid plan.
Just then, Herthaâs phone rang. It was Alaric!
Hertha was so excited that she fumbled with her phone, nearly dropping it twice. She took a deep breath to calm herself before answering the call.
In a soft, flirtatious voice, she greeted, âHello, to what do I owe the pleasure? Miss me already?â
âCut the crap!â Alaricâs voice was clearly annoyed. âCan you be normal for once?â
Hertha was taken aback. She had tried being nice and got shot down.
She sighed deeply, âWhat do you want, Alaric?â
Thalassa watched aghast as Hertha went from sweet to sassy in the blink of an eye.
âDo you remember the favor you owe me from last time at that hotel?â Alaricâs voice was stern.
âWhat hotel? What favor?â Hertha was confused, her tone a mix of irritation and confusion.
Suddenly, she remembered, and her voice dropped to a whisper, âOh, that time. We agreed to call it even, remember?â
They had agreed to go their separate ways after that incident, so Alaricâs sudden call was a surprise.
âWeâre far from even! You tricked me, Hertha, and now you must face the consequences!â Alaricâs voice was foreboding.
