Thalassa gently gripped the hand that Evelyn had used to smack her arm. Though Evelynâs intentions seemed violent, the hit did not hurt.
Thalassa knew that Evelyn was venting her intense worry in this way.
Looking at Evelyn, Thalassa comforted her, âMom, itâs fine, Iâm good. I was just dealing with some work stuff. You donât need to worry.â
Knowing her motherâs concern, Thalassa couldnât reveal what she had been going through in front of her four children. They were young but understood more than one might think.
She couldnât let them worry about her at such a tender age.
Evelyn wiped away her tears, trying to maintain her composure, âAlright, letâs eat. You look thin.â
She knew Thalassaâs reservations. As the childrenâs grandmother, she deeply cared for them and didnât want them to understand the harsh realities of life at such a young age.
On the table, there was a plate of spaghetti..
Evelyn served some into Thalassaâs bowl.
Thalassa smiled at Evelyn. It was a smile of reassurance to affirm her mother that she was fine.
Not wanting to disappoint her mother, she picked up her fork to eat the spaghetti.
However, the oiliness, coupled with the strong taste of the seasonings, was too much.
Upon tasting it, Thalassa felt a wave of nausea. She quickly stifled the feeling and spit out the mouthful.
She wiped her mouth and took a sip of warm water to settle her stomach.
Her actions made Evelyn frown. âWhatâs wrong? You donât like what I made?â
Thalassa quickly shook her head, âNo, I had something to eat before I got here. Iâm too full, I canât eat anymore.â
This was the truth..
She had had mushroom soup before coming.
But she wasnât that full.
Her nausea was due to her stomach not having fully recovered from days of hunger. She couldnât eat anything too greasy or spicy, only bland liquid foods.
Otherwise, her stomach would suffer.
Just one bite of the spaghetti had caused a violent reaction. This was her stomach rejecting the greasy food, protecting itself.
Evelyn snorted, âThen just drink water!â
After saying this, she took a bite of her kebab, seemingly venting her frustrations and worries.
Hertha, noticing the tense atmosphere between Evelyn and Thalassa, didnât dare to interrupt.
âAlright, letâs just be glad that youâre back. The kids are relieved, and they wonât cry looking for you. If youâre really full, just have some yogurt. Elowen won the semifinals of a gourmet competition today and will be competing in the finals soon. Weâre celebrating Elowenâs victory today. Letâs all be happy,â
Hertha changed the topic, trying to lighten the mood.
Thalassa gave her a smile and stayed silent, while Evelyn let her frustration out on the food.
The adults stopped talking, leaving only occasional childish chatter.
Before long, all the food was gone.
It was time to head home.
Hertha faced a problemn, âMy car canât fit everyone. What do we do?â
Taking four children and one adult was already stretching the capacity of her car.
If she were to take Thalassa as well, it would be a serious overload. The risk of getting caught by traffic police was high, not to mention the safety hazard.
