Suddenly, she felt a pang of compassion for Lysander, thinking that heâd got a pretty rough deal too.
Heâd lost his parents when he was just a kid.
Sure, her family life wasnât exactly a bed of roses, growing up without the love and care of a dad, but at least she had her mom by her side.
Her mom might be soft-spoken and a bit of a chatterbox, but what mattered most was that she loved her.
Sheâd known a motherâs love since she was a kid.
But Lysander had lost his folks when he was just a tyke.
Compared to her, he had it way worse.
Thalassa looked at Lysander with tenderness in her eyes, hesitated for a moment standing by the desk, and then put the car keys and the neatly packed clothes on 1.
She said softly, âMr. Sinclair, here are the clothes and car keys you lent me yesterday. Iâm returning them now.â
Lysander stopped what he was doing and looked at her with intense eyes.
He didnât say a word, but his silent gaze made it hard for Thalassa to even breathe.
She explained, âMr. Sinclair, donât worry. Iâll make sure to get up early from now on. I swear I wonât be late anymore. Iâm really not used to this car. My driving skills are so bad I almost had a few accidents on my way to the office.â
She had accepted the BMW earlier because David had pushed her to take it. He had said that if she didnât accept it, Mr. Sinclair might think that he wasnât doing his job properly.
She couldnât let David fail because of her.
But there was no way she was going to fully accept the car.
The villa heâd built for her family was to thank her for saving his life five years ago and to make up for the harm heâd done to her then.
Sheâd accepted the villa because she believed that she had every right to claim it.
But now, apart from her regular salary, she couldnât accept anything else Lysander offered her.
If she did, sheâd really become his woman.
That would be crossing a line which she wasnât willing to do, so she couldnât accept those.
Lysanderâs deep, ocean-like eyes were still fixed on her, inscrutable and as cold as ice.
Thalassa felt a chill run down her spine. She straightened up, swallowed her fear, and continued to say, âLysander, did your hand get hurt yesterday? Thanks for teaching Bruce a lesson for my mom.â
The moment she mentioned Bruceâs name, Lysanderâs gaze turned sharp and icy as he yelled, âGet out!â
His tone was harsh and brooked no argument.
His words cut like a knife.
Thalassa was taken aback. She nodded quickly and hurriedly turned to leave the room.
Once she was out of the office, she took a deep breath to calm herself down.
That was seriously scary.
She chided herself for being foolish, feeling sorry for a man high above the rest, holding life and death in his hands.
Sure, he had a rough childhood, but he lived in the lap of luxury at that point, rich enough to buy even a country, getting whatever he wanted.
And what was her condition? She had to worry about making ends meet every day.
She was so weak that Lysander could crush her with only one finger.
And yet she had the audacity to show him gratitude and concern. What a joke.
Got kicked out in the cold, didnât she?
She wouldnât repeat the same mistake next time.
Thalassa gave her own head a light smack and headed back to the secretaryâs office.
Meanwhile, in the CEOâs office.
Lysander was clutching his pen so hard his knuckles turned white, his handsome face was a mask of icy fury, as cold as frost and as heavy as snow, chilling to the bone.
His breathing was ragged as he stared at the car keys on the desk, and at the neatly folded clothes in the brown paper bag.
His suppressed anger was like a volcano, ready to explode at any moment.
He swept away the bag and keys off the table in one swift motion.
