Astrid was heading for the door.
âIâm home.â Hertha walked in with a plastic bag. When she bumped into Astrid, she chuckled awkwardly. âThalassa has to work overtime today. She wonât be home. I took a spin at the supermarket and bought some ingredients for dinner.â
Thalassa had asked her to tell her mom and aunt she was working late. She didnât want them to know sheâd been hauled off by the police and worry them.
Hertha was terrible at lying and was still figuring out how to break the news.
On her way home, sheâd made a detour to the supermarket and bought stuff for dinner. It would keep Astrid busy and away from asking too many questions.
âThalassaâs working late? Is she not coming home for dinner?â Astrid took the bag from Hertha, glanced behind her, and then asked, âWhere are the kids?â
Hertha had left with Atticus and Dorian.
How come she was the only one who came back?
âI ran into Evelyn at the park. They wanted to play with her.â Hertha replied.
âGive Thalassa a call. Tell her to come home early if she can. We have a guest. And heâs here specifically for her.â Astrid was worried about not being a good host.
âA guest? Who?â Hertha was curious. She walked into the room and saw the awe-inspiring, powerful man sitting on the couch.
âMr. Sinclair!â She gasped in surprise.
It was Lysander!
He was tall and distinguished, dressed in a sleek black suit, looking noble and elegant.
Just sitting there, he was a sight to behold. Everything else in the room paled in comparison. He stood out, prestigious and charismatic. Lysander turned his head and recognized Hertha as the mother of the kids who had caused a ruckus in his office and a friend of Thalassaâs.
âMr. Sinclair, please wait a moment. Iâll start cooking. Why donât you stay for dinner? Itâll be ready soon.â
Astrid walked in with the bag. â her face filled with a polite smile.
Lysander stood up and gracefully adjusted his cuffs. In a deep voice, he said, âNo need. I should be goingâ
And with that, he left.
Astrid was about to politely insist he stay, but his presence was too overpowering. The words got stuck in her throat, and she couldnât. say them.
Hertha was still in a daze, standing there.
What just happened?
Lysander had actually come to Thalassaâs house!
He was the esteemed CEO of the Sinclair Group, a man to be looked up to.
Heâd actually lowered himself to come to Thalassaâs rundown neighborhood.
If this got out, no one would believe it.
While Hertha was still stunned, Astrid nudged her arm and asked, âDo you know this man?â
Hertha snapped out of it, widened her round eyes, and said, âHeâs the CEO of the Sinclair Group, Thalassaâs boss.â
Astrid looked scared. âHer boss? Why is he looking for Thalassa? Did she do something wrongâ¦â
Oh no, the jig was up.
Hertha was on edge and laughed nervously. âNo way! Thalassa is always so obedient and well-
behaved. She couldnât have done anything wrong. Evelyn, youâre overthinking.â
âBut why would he want to see Thalassa?â Astrid was still worried.
-âMaybe because Thalassa is doing a great job, and he wanted to check on her.â Hertha finished and stuck her tongue out absentmindedly.
Astrid flashed a grin and said, âAlright, Iâm off to cookâ
