âYou fucked that one up.â Iâm clipped in the back of the head, and when I turn around, Anya is standing there with her arms crossed over her chest.
âWhat?â I say, shrugging my shoulders.
âYou thought you could get her into bed with that stupid game?â Her gaze moves to River, whoâs stepping out of the restaurant. âAnd you!â She points to him. âYou shouldnât have entertained this stupid game in the first place.â She shakes her head before she stomps off to the waiting car.
âMan, you made my wife mad,â River says, although I can tell heâs amused.
âTo be fair, I didnât think both of them would be this angry. It was just a little cheek.â
He shakes his head. âFor someone so smart, youâre really dense when it comes to women. Maybe more so because you donât know how to deal with them outside of fucking them.â
My phone buzzes, and I see itâs my sister. I ignore it. âThat might be true, but Iâm certain I can win the next bet.â
River looks at me in disbelief. âI donât think you have a second plane to spare. And besides, I donât think sheâs going to play that game twice.â
I casually shrug. âSo I let her choose the guy next time.â
River laughs. âYouâre out of your mind if you think sheâll fall for that a second time. And itâs not as if you would let her take any other manâs number anyway.â
Iâm quiet for a moment as his words sink in. Alina and I arenât anything. But neither would I let her go home with another man. Would I? It shouldnât affect me. So why does just the thought bother me so much?
Riverâs smiling now. âGrovel, my friend. Itâs all you have time for. Iâd watch that one, actually, she was pretty smooth. Good luck with her ever speaking to you again.â
âFuck off.â I flip him off and he laughs.
âAnyway, now I gotta suck up to my wife because sheâs mad,â he says as he waves and heads to his car.
I watch as he gets in, and they drive off just as my phone starts buzzing again.
Maria.
Fuck. I approach my car thatâs waiting at the curb. I know sheâll continue calling until I answer. Persistence is the one thing we have equal footing on.
I sit in the back of the car but donât offer my driver direction as I answer my phone.
âWhat do you want?â I huff into the phone.
âWhat do I want?â she asks, flabbergasted âWhat did you do?â she screams. âI warned you to not fuck up my relationships with my friends. Why are you even hanging around Alina? I thought you went to New York for work.â
âSheâs a paid contractor working for my friend. We run into one another from time to time.â
âAnd she is my friend,â she warns. âIâll tell Mom. Is that what you want? Me to go and tell her youâre trying to sleep with my friends?â
âI did that once.â
Shit, maybe more than once.
But whoâs counting?
The juvenile threat of dobbing on me to my mother shouldnât be as effective as it is. But the truth was we both adored our parents, and no one could be more relentless than my mother. Itâd only cause more of a headache as she theatrically claimed she raised a brute of a son.
âAnd are they still my friends?â she asks pointedly.
âI donât know, Maria.â I sigh. âBut do not go to our mother.â The last thing I want is her badgering me as well. My mother looks at me differently these days. Like she pities me. I donât need to add ammunition to cause her to worry about me more, or worse, to try to convince me to come back to London; she has tried that already.
âWell, stay away from Alina.â
Iâm surprised when my phone beeps to indicate another call. I check the screen and see Alekâs name. Itâs not too often he calls.
âI havenât slept with her anyway. I have to go, work and all. Donât worry, Iâll make it up to Alina.â
âNo, you stay away from her, Will,â she demands.
âLove you too,â I say, hanging up and answering Alekâs call.
âArenât I Mr. Popular today? Itâs not like you to call me. You mustâve really missed me,â I tease as I bring up the tracker I put on Alinaâs phone. Iâd be the furthest thing from a gentleman if I didnât make sure she got back to the hotel safely.
âDo you answer your phone like that all the time?â Alek asks, irritated.
âYouâre special to me,â I say, and I can just imagine his jaw ticking.
âI need you to find someone for me,â he states.
My eyebrows perk in surprise. Itâs not often Alek calls upon my services. For the most part heâs efficient enough on his own.
âIâm kind of between jobs at the moment and staying in New York for a bit,â I tell him.
âBetween jobs?â He sounds shocked. I suppose that makes two of us considering Iâve never taken a break. âIâll pay you double. Itâs local, but I need the person found within a day.â
A challenge. I do like challenges. And local⦠itâs tempting.
âWhy canât you find him yourself?â I ask, curious now.
Alek is silent for a moment. Without his body language to read, I simply wait until heâs a big boy and uses his words. âI havenât found him yet. But itâs Lenaâs birthday in two days and I want this guy dead.â
âAh.â I click my tongue. âCanât be late for wifeyâs birthday.â I laugh, knowing how much it pisses him off. But the truth is, as I say it, it brings up something uncomfortable in my own chest.
It reminds me of my previous life, of things that were precious to me before they were taken away. Suddenly, nothing seems funny anymore.
And Iâm left with the dire realization that I seriously fucked up with Alina.
âSend me the details. Iâll find him for you.â
I watch the pinpoint of Alinaâs tracker. I canât dispute her accusation that Iâm an asshole. And perhaps I should give it a little bit of time before I grovel.
Grovel? Me?
I try not to laugh at myself.
How the fuck did I end up in this situation when I havenât even fucked this woman yet?
