âWhat do you want from me?â He stepped back and the chains grew slack.
Follow me. Step into my reach.
But she merely lifted a brow and didnât move.
She knows what Iâm doing. Damn her.
âI want you to suffer as a captive. Youâre my prisoner here. These shackles.â She pointed. âWill be like the invisible walls you bound me with in WaterRose.â
âFine.â His mouth whitened.
âFine is, it?â
âI said itâs fine.â
âLet me explain to you how this will work. Then you can tell me how fine âtis.â Her blue gaze narrowed on him. âYouâll only come out of these chains when I wish it. Just like aboard the FireStar. And you will go back in them when I say. Or there will be hell to pay if I have to call them back in here.â She indicated the door.
âIâm not afraid of them.â
âNo, youâre not. You fear perilously little. Even your own safety doesnât matter to you. So no amount of torture would ever break you. Thereâs only two things you seem to care about.â
His gut wrenched. How could she know?
âTwo?â He acted as though he knew not what she spoke of.
âMe.â She rounded and gestured to herself as she walked. âAnd Iâm disinclined to harm myself.â
âAnd?â He was scared. Truly scared. For the first time he could ever recall.
They couldnât have gotten into WaterRose?
âYou know Iâd never seen the creatures come out of you like that.â She murmured as she strolled back to the side of the bed he couldnât see. âIâd only seen the one peek out that one day. I could never have imagined the brutality of what itâd look like when they went back in. So much worse then when they emerge.â She shuddered slightly. âIt does look painful.â
âYour point?â
âI watched them, once you fell to the floor, half-dead. They climbed back in. Clawing through then sticking their little heads through and chomping away and breaking bones to get back inside. A monstrous sight indeed. And I wondered.â She reached next to the bed and lifted a giant metal cage. âHow connected to you they really are.â
A small black and gold dragon twisted in circles in the small space. Hissing in its agitation. Frantic to escape.
Bastâs eyes narrowed on her.
âLook how mad it is. But when I reach inâ¦â She flipped open the door and stuck her hand in.â
âNo!â He warned.
But the beast in the cage only laid down on the far side. Blinking huge dark eyes at her. Unwilling to hurt her. And not entirely afraid of her.
âAnd when I did this.â She stroked her fingers lightly over the spines on the little dragonâs back.
Bast made a guttural sound very close to a purr and arched slightly as though she caressed her fingers against raw nerve endings in his back. Pleasurable.
âYou did that.â She looked from the cage to him. âAnd when I did this.â She curled her fingers and the black talons jutted from them before she reached back in.
âDonât hurt him.â He said. âYour point is made.â
âIt takes very little.â She drug one claw barely across the dragonâs side. Not even enough to break skin but like with the stroke it was a touch on raw nerves.
Bast hissed in pain and twisted sideways trying to escape the invisible touch.
âYou feel everything he does. And I think in some ways you care for him.â She closed the door and latched it. Setting the cage back on the floor.
âI donât need a dozen Firoque.â She thoughtfully turned a blade on her bedstand above the cage. âDo I?â
âElsabet⦠What would you have me do?â He asked cautiously. Tone chastising.
âAnything I want. When I want.â
âAre you intending I hurt someone for you? Iâll never do it.â
âNo. Youâve hurt enough.â She said waspishly.
Meaning her.
âI want you to do as I say.â
âFine.â
What exactly is this going to entail? It canât be as simple as that?
âDo you agree to be docile?â
âDocile!â He objected.
Iâm the furthest thing from docile.
âIâm not a âdocileâ type of man.â He added.
âWill you obey me, Sebastian?â
His eyes zeroed in on her. âFor a woman who vowed never to say my name you certainly seem to enjoy seeing it today.â
âItâs a nice substitute for slave.â She strolled to him with a shrug. âIt even has a similar ring.â
No. It doesnât.
âFine.â He growled.
âFine what?â
âIâll obey.â The word nearly sickened him to choke out.
âNo.â She leaned close by his shoulder to peer up at him. âNo, I will obey you.â
Deplorable.
âSay it.â She saw the annoyance flickering on his face.
âI donât believe I ever had you vow to obey me.â
âIt wouldâve never worked. But then youâve not the leverage I do.â She sniffed haughtily.
âYouâre really enjoying this arenât you?â He said dully.
She smiled brightly. âYouâve not the faintest idea how much.â
âFine.â He blinked down at her expressionlessly. âI vow to obey you, Elsabet.â
It stuck on his tongue like a rotten bit of food.
âDid it hurt?â She feigned a sympathetic pout.
âSomething is going to eventually. You wonât be able to keep me forever.â
âWonât I?â She lifted blonde brows. âIt seems quite amusing thus far.â
âEither Iâll eventually get free or Radix will gut me. Either way I wonât be your toy for long.â
âYou think he would?â
âI know it.â Bast grunted.
âYou donât know much.â She whispered. âPerhaps Iâve him wrapped about my little finger.â She wiggled her pinky meaningfully.
âOnly if youâve turned on us.â He looked at her steadily.
