Nightway
ALAZAR
Alazareth had a full day planned of checking on WaterRose and then inspecting the grounds of Nightway Castle and checking on the populus.
âYou think itâll take all day?â She asked sadly.
âThink youâll miss me?â He asked over his shoulder as he finished wiping his face from the washing bowl on the mantle.
âI know I will.â
Alazar had woke up early every morning the last fortnight. Even the morning after the Forever Knight Ball. With a pounding headache.
Every day he met with the peasants to hear of their grievances.
âYour reputation as a good ruler is growing.â She murmured as she rolled onto her side to watch him.
âWhy do you not sound pleased?â
She shrugged. âPerhaps Iâm a bit envious. I wanted to be adored like that.â
âDonât be.â He turned. Wiping his hands clean. âI do it for you. As your mate. Iâm trying to make peace in the realm. Once weâve established that, you and I will rule as one.â
She nodded. Cheek resting on her palm.
âWhat will you do, today?â
âI thought I might go see some of the villagers.â
He nodded. âWill you take Jacob with you?â
The knight I hand trained. Now assigned as her personal guard.
I could trust no one else to watch over her.
âI will.â
He pulled a white flower from the mantle and set it on the bed next to her. Dropping it on the linens next to her hands.
She smiled tenderly up at him.
Once she knew he was out of the castle. She strode to the window to watch him cross the bailey and meet the stableboy bringing out Erstwhile Knight. Alazar hopped smoothly atop him and left.
âJacob!â Riaura called. Summoning the knight.
âYes, Your Highness?â He bowed in the doorway, having been waiting outside at Alazarâs bidding.
âPlease ready some horses. Weâre going to MidGale.â
âMidGale? But I-â
âMidGale, Jacob.â She asserted decisively.
âYes, Mum. Might I ask where weâre going and how long weâll be staying so I can plan supplies accordingly.â
âTo the Barristerâs House.â
âThe Barrister-Danbur-Butâ¦Heâs not going to like this Mum.â
âHeâs not here.â
âButâ¦â
âJacob! Are you going to guard me or not?â
âOh, the hell if youâre leaving without me, Mum. Heâll kill me!â Jacob left to go prepared for the day.
Expecting he was down in the stables readying the horses, she went downstairs. Looking at the steps thoughtfully but as she reached the bottom step, she spotted boots and brown leather breeches. Her stomach sinking as her gaze trailed up to the plain brown belt and accompanying scabbard. Over a tan tunic. When her eyes lifted, she encountered the solid, knowing stare of her husband.
The King.
âMight I join you, Wife?â
âI uh-well, I was goingâ¦â
âI know where you were going.â
âDid Jacob tell on me?â
âHe didnât have to.â He said derisively.
âYou read my mind?â
âNo. I read your body language. I knew you were keeping something from me.â He titled his head reprimandingly. âYou forget how well I know you.â
âNo.â She shook her head. âYouâll not-â
âItâs too dangerous for me not to.â His eyes burned yellow. âYou know Iâll follow you anyway.â
His tone brooked no argument.
She deflated. âIâm well-aware.â
âI wonât let something happen to you.â
âI know. Still, itâs something I need do alone.â
âIâll give you space to do so. But if you need me, all you need do...â
âIs call for you and youâll magically appear. I know.â Her shoulders slumped.
âYou need not talk to him.â He offered. âI can keep him from you for an eternity if you wish it.â
For a moment she considered it. âNo. This...I do alone.â She walked by him.
He caught her hand briefly. His fingertips trailed her palm and fingers as she walked. A reassuring touch.
Outside, Riaura found Ingenious. Making her way to the Barristers.
Once there she saw the front door was ajar. The house seemed impossibly quiet and no cattle milled on the lawn as they were wont to. She walked through gate and carefully closed it behind her.
A wide trail of seared earth rounded the side of the house to the open front door.
Riaura bent to touch it. Feeling the chalky texture.
Alazar rode up to the Barristerâs just behind her. Tying Erstwhile to a nearby tree before aiming for the house.
He found her following the ashen trail. Near the door, she heard voices from within.
âItâs time for you to go to his holding now.â Radixâs voice.
Riaura retreated a step and Alazareth caught her shoulders.
âWhat is it?â
âI know that voice.â She whispered covering her mouth.
He heard it too and his hair prickled in instinctive response. Radix.
âLetâs go.â He began to lead her away.â
âNo, I want to hear this.â
âThis is dangerous!â He warned in a hushed voice.
âIâm not going anywhere!â
If she fights me out here it could alert Radix. Alazar shifted uncomfortably. Tempted to haul her over his shoulder.
But sheâll scream. He knew with absolute certainty. He swore.
âThis is foolishness!â
âNo excuses!â Radixâs rasping voice rose and the smack of someone being struck. âYou were tasked with something so simple.â
Danburyâs voice rose in a pleading response. âI havenât failed! What more could I have done?â
âControl your fiancé!â
âI had her. She was my puppet for years. I donât know what happened! I was suddenly banished from the Castle.â Charlesâ voice cracked.
âThen you let the Knight steal her from beneath your nose!â
âWhat could I do?â Charles defended. âSheâs been difficult to keep under my thumb lately.â
âYou had your orders. Wed the girl, take the castle, and you get to be my ruler of Nightway. But now, youâre of no use to me.â Radix spat.
âDonât kill me, Master!â Charles begged pitifully.
