Rhyers House, Mane Country
RHYERS
âIâm coordinating a ball in a monthâs time. Itâll be in Grier. To celebrate.â Sebastian looked more vibrant then he had in much time. âThe Captain has approved us to gather as long as I have fountains surrounding it. Iâm having he stone imported from the Isle.â
Rhyers watched Sebastian restlessly circling his Dining Room table while he ate lunch.
âYouâre spilling over with joy, Brother.â Rhyers commented tonelessly. Eying Bast as though heâd grown two heads.
Havenât seen him like this in over a year.
âCan you blame me?â Bast grinned. Nearly breathless.
âIs this a plan to lure her?â Rhyers asked suspiciously.
Elsabet.
I know it is. Why bother even asking?
âSheâll come. I know her.â Bast said with certainty.
Great.
âAnd what will you do?â
âHave a word with her.â Bastâs smirk suggested itâd be a bit more than that.
Some word.
âAre you going to drag her back to WaterRose?â Rhyers asked warily.
Thatâll end badly. For all of us.
Bastâs face sombered. âNo. Iâll never do that to her again.â
Well thatâs something.
âAre you going to tell her?â
âNo.â Bastâs lips whitened. âIâll not have that be the reasons she comes back. Iâll not have her like that.â
âSheâd want to know.â
âShe will. When the time is right.â Bast said. Drawing a pleased breath.
When will that be, I wonder?
âI donât know that Iâve ever seen you so happy.â Rhyers shook his head, befuddled.
Bast abruptly caught his shoulders. âSay youâll come!â
âFine. Fine. Iâll come.â
âBring that girl.â Bast turned away to go.
âWhat girl?â Rhyers asked hesitantly.
Not Ebony. He hoped. Already envisioning Bast and the others mercilessly taunting him and telling her horrible tales of his failed feats.
Least itâd kill some of the hero worship for Christophe. Though Iâm not sure I want it to die. He admitted.
âEbony Marshall.â Bast supplied.
Of course. Rhyers grunted.
âWhy? What are you going to do to me?â
Bast grinned. âMake sure youâre happiness is secured.â
âHow about you drown me in one of the fountains instead.â He said ruefully.
âCould be arranged.â Bast rubbed his chin thoughtfully. âFrom what youâve said of the girl, I could tell her you called her rabid and see if sheâll do it herself.â
âDonât tell her that!â Rhyers objected. âSheâll believe it.â
âOf course, she would.â Bast grinned facetiously. âIf I say it.â
âYouâre utterly deplorable.â
âIâm aware.â Bast dismissed. âBring her. Or Iâll fetch her and tell her you said she couldnât come.â
âNo!â Rhyers squawked. Leaping from his chair.
Then sheâll never leave!
That afternoon when Bast had settled some he sat on one of the matching brown divanâs in Rhyersâ parlor. Enjoying port across from Rhyers.
âYou should invest in sherry. Far better flavor.â
âPerhaps your imported sherry.â Rhyers acknowledged.
Sebastian stared in the glass. Thoughtfully swirling it.
Usually my move.
âWhatâs on your mind?â Rhyers queried.
âAn ugly Firoque. Green and yellow tinged. Massive.â
âWith a smithâs hammer?â Rhyers swallowed his hearty drink.
âYes. Who is he?â Bast frowned at Rhyers.
âRadixâs favorite Commander. His name is Okine. Why?â
âI followed Elsabet after I let her on the Isle. She met with him there.â
âDid she look frightened?â
âNo.â Bast responded.
Rhyersâ face crumpled. âI hate to tell you then, Friend, if she is associating comfortably with the commander then she belongs to Radix.â
âI donât believe that.â Bast said. âIf she is serving him, thereâs more to it than that.â
âIt couldnât be that sheâs that angry at you?â
âNot angry enough to turn. Not on all of you too. In her own way she loved all of us.â
âWe certainly loved her.â Rhyers lifted his glass in a salute. Feeling pain behind his eyes.
Though Iâd never admit it. I miss her.
Her strange kindness at the moments itâs needed most. Her maternal wisdom.
We needed her at WaterRose. Rhyers thought. It was Heaven sent that she came to us when she did.
To him. His eyes assessed Sebastian staring into the glass.
âI want to believe in her too.â Rhyers said.
âItâs not that I want toâ Bast countered. âI simply do. I will always believe in her. She wouldnât turn on us.â
âAnd what will you do if you find she has?â Rhyers said.
We have to consider the awful possibility.
She knows where WaterRose is.
âThen weâll enact the emergency plan Lucien and I established while I was on the Isle.â
Rhyers nodded. Sipping his port to hide his worry. Hopefully it never comes to that.
