Chastain whooshed a breath at the sight of Meralee. Recognizing her instantly. Even from so long ago. âYouâve grown so much!â
Chastain caught Mera in a tight hug.
Stunned, Mera caught a lock of curling red hair and looked at the older girl. âI remember youâ¦You got us out.â
âNoâ¦Actually I just followed someone.â Shock set in on Chastainâs face.
âWhat is it?â Acharius caught her arm stunned and turned her toward him.
âI can see his face now.â
âWhose?â
âThe spirit that led us from the mushroom hut?â
âYou know who it was?â Urgency entered the huge manâs voice. As he protectively pulled her closer to him.
âYesâ¦â She stared up at him with stunned green eyes. âChavias.â
âChavias!â Shock settled over Achariusâ features. He instantly recalled the day heâd thought that he would owe the individual that got her out of that hut, a tremendous debt. âThe man that nearly killed me?â
âIt was him, Acharius. Iâm certain. His face was vaguely familiar, but I couldnât remember whyâ¦It was because he was hazy, his features distorted then. I thought he was a wraith haunting the woods. Some miraculous salvation.â
âHe was your salvationâ¦â
Perhaps I owe him more than just my life. It was a sobering thought. Settling deep in Achariusâ soul.
A purple-haired girl approaching drew Chastainâs stunned expression. âSerdephe!â
She grinned and quickly embraced Chastain.
âYouâre hair!â Chastain stared at it in shock.
âI know.â Ser pulled the heavy waves over her shoulder. âSoon after you left me in the Netherlands it changed. I donât know whyâ¦â
âItâs stunning!â
âIâm rather fond of it.â An imposing white-haired man stepped to Serâs side to comment.
âThis is Teverius.â Ser introduced.
He bowed rather coldly.
Meralee Carter was staring at Serdephe in shock.
âWhat?â Ser noticed her dark-eyed stare.
âI thought they were scouring the land for you. I told them you were already in acquaintance with one of our knights, but I couldnât see who, in my visions.â
âLooking for me? Why?â
âThatâs why Deragan told me to produce you.â Tev grumbled. Frowning at Meralee.
Serdephe couldnât tear her gaze from Meralee. âYouâre my little sister? The visioner?â
âYes!â Meralee covered her mouth in shock. âI didnât think Iâd see any of you ever again.â
âNeither did I!â Chastain added with a joyous expression. She looked at Acharius in wonder. âChavias said heâd guided them to each of his brethren for them to protect the girls. I knew nothing of your kind back thenâ¦â She murmured.
What can I say to that?
Howâd he find them? Guide them?
Who has he become?
But there was no forgetting Dearburn.
Acharius escorted her back to Meredith House in her white gown.
She held his arm with one hand and her skirt from the dirt with the other. âItâs strange to imagine Iâm now part of your âpackâ.â
âWhy?â
âJust seems a strange thing to say.â
âYouâre all so strong and powerful and Iâmâ¦â She shrugged.
âVirtually perfect.â
âIf you say.â She smiled from under hooded lashes.
He lifted her over a few fallen branches. Setting her carefully on her feet.
âAfraid I might tumble?â She lifted a red brow.
âI know you. You often tumble.â
âBut you always catch me.â She tipped her chin up to beam at him.
âYes.â He nodded grudgingly. âI do.â
