WhiteHall, Paladines
RAESE
âI should go find them.â
âNo.â Rodger shook his head. Cautioning, not for the first time. âYou need to be comfortable using that if its your weapon. Donât you think?â
Not the first time heâs said it.
But Iâm losing patience.
âIâll go get my staff.â
âNo.â Rodger shook his head. âYou said you could summon it before. Letâs see if you can now.â
âDonât you think some of this is perhaps insanity?â Raese asked. Surprised by how willing his friend was to help him.
âNot after what Iâve seen.â Rodger shrugged.
âHas Widow Parker been upset with you for spending so much time here.â
âOf course,â Rodger shrugged. âbut sheâs appeased by pretty trinkets. As you said.â
She certainly is. Raese wants again thought how grateful he was for Rodger distracting the womanâs attentions.
They went to the far end of WhiteHallâs grounds.
Where Iâve been practicing my archery. Raese was aware it was far enough from WhiteHall, itâd be impossible to see what they were doing.
Theyâd only made it halfway before the white streak charged from the Western part of Inner Forestway, the forest bordering both Mane and the Paladines.
Raese knelt and happily rubbed the wakkonâs cheeks. âHello, Snowman.â Raese offered him a handful of choice bits of dried meat. âEnjoy, My Friend.â
Once the trio got to the far side of the lawns, Rodger sat down the wooden chair heâd been carrying. Wiggling it into the dirt to get a flat seat.
Snowman lurked near his legs. Rubbing his shoulders fondly against Raeseâs knees.
Raese flicked his wrist twice but couldnât get the staff to appear.
âRelax.â Rodger coached. âImagine it already being there.â
Raese envisioned the twisted bit of crooked wood. Smoothed save for the three points where it twisted a different direction. Atop it was the small green orb, alive and swirling with emerald and yellow lights.
âNow imagine Iâm tossing it to you and youâre going to catch it. Ready?â Rodger paused. âGo!â
Raese instinctively imagined it and the wood hit his palm with so much momentum that he had to twist his wrist to keep from losing his grip. And he realized part of what heâd been doing wrong. Turning my wrist doesnât make the staff appear. It offsets the momentum of the staff hitting it.
He looked at Rodger in wonder.
Rodger gave a triumphant nod. Sitting back and crossing his arms over his chest. âWell done!â
Howâd he know how to do that?
Before Rodgerâs coaching had been nervous suggestions. Sometimes working, sometimes not but now he was decisive and to the point. Almost like a different person.
Suspicious, Raese pretended to not notice. âIn some of my visions of the past, I saw myself sending surges of energy from this.â He pointed toward the globe atop it. âHow do you think I could make it do that?â
âDrop it flat so it sits on the ground.â Rodger nodded. Adding as a forethought. âI think. Then perhaps you should feel like youâre sending a punch from that. Thrusting it like a muscle youâre flexing.â
âDo you think?â
Rodger shrugged. âIâd think thatâs what itâd be like.â
Raese drew a staying breath and then did as Rodger had suggested. Sending a fierce gold beam sailing into the edge of the target. Spinning it sideways and toppling it over. Singeing the sand bags which had supported it.
He turned huge eyes to Rodger.
âWell done!â
âWho are you?â Raese said deadened.
âWhat do you mean?â Rodgerâs smile died. He cleared his throat. Putting a fist to his mouth and looking down.
âWho are you?â Raese stalked to stand near him.
But not near enough to reach.
Is he Cimmerii?
Has he been lying to me all this time?
âOr should I ask what are you?â Raese charged.
Rodger sighed and stood. âFine. You have me.â
âYouâre Cimmerii?â
Rodger scoffed. âFar from. Iâm no different then you.â He gestured to Raese. âNo different at all.â
âArenât you?â
âNo.â
âIâm a Forever Knight. And a Merlinus.â
âWhat?â Raese looked at him, horrified. âA-A-What?â
âYour brother.â
âWhat!â Raese staff bloomed in a surge of light that lit the grounds and blew leaves off the decorative shrubbery.
âWhoa whoa!â Rodger laughed. âCalm down and let me explain before you kill us both!â
