SEBASTIAN
It feels good to have my arm around the lad. Sebastian hid the fact that he was faintly surprised Savage Jack was inclined to let him.
More awestruck with Sivikon then willing to let me, probably. Bast watched amused as his eyes were locked on the gorgeous stallion.
âHandsome, isnât he?â
âUnique. Iâve never seen one comparable.â
âThere isnât any.â
âWhat a lonely existence.â Savage Jack remarked.
Bast shot him a fast look. âI guess Iâve never considered that.â He looked up the horseâs muzzle. âAre you lonely?â
If Sivikon thought anything, he was disinclined to share.
âWhatâs on your mindâ¦What do people usually call you?â
âSavage Jack. But Jaxson is fine.â
He sounded as though heâd prefer it, actually.
Savage Jack considered it. âI told you. Iâm worried sheâll betray you.â
âSo worried about my welfare already?â Bast teased. A smile dancing on his face.
Savage Jack shot him a quick look.
He is. Do you care about my well-being boy? Bastâs brows lifted in surprise. Not as cold as we all think, are you?
âCome wish my valkyrie happy birthday and weâll see how the night fares. If youâre worried, you may watch my back.â
âChavias did that once.â
Ouch. Meaning, see how that turned out? Bast ducked his head, pained.
âYes, he did.â He acknowledged. Turning to the stallion to stay him at the treeline. âWait for her here, Sivikon.â
âDo you hate him so much?â Savage Jack gave him a long look.
âChavias?â Bast paused rubbing the horseâs shoulder. Not looking back at the younger man.
âYes.â
âNo. Iâve never hated him. I mourn for him.â
âWould you want him back if you could have him.â
âHe doesnât want to come back to us.â Sadness marked Bastâs tone.
âYes, he does. Very much.â
Sebastian spun to face him. âIs it true he raised you.â
âSince I was around ten, I think.â
âWas it dreadful.â
âNot because of him.â Savage Jack was solemn. His mouth whitening.
âDid he teach you to kill.â
âPeople. Yes.â
Bast grimaced.
âIf he hadnât, Radix wouldâve cut me from ear to ear.â
Bast drew a quaking breath. Thatâs the truth and we both know it.
âDo you believe in him?â
âLike you believe in her.â Savage Jack nodded toward Red Manor.
âNot sure thatâs possible. But point taken.â
âIt is.â Savage Jack lowered his head. âWhen I love someone, I do so with every fiber of my being.â
âYouâd get that from Jerica.â Bast grinned.
Queen Ocnomad. His mother.
âI think not.â Savage Jack said levelly. Giving him a meaningful look.
Iâll take that as a great compliment from him.
âAnd you care for Chavias, I take it?â Bast asked. The gravity of his question clear.
âHeâs the closest thing to family I had.â
Had. I like that.
âThen I guess I should thank him for doing what I did not.â There was no bitterness in Bastâs voice.
I mean it. Thank God someone looked out for the boy in that hellhole.
âI didnât know you existed.â Bast murmured.
âI know.â
They walked back toward Red Manor in-step.
âI donât blame you. Iâve a sense of what youâd have done if you knew.â
Bast shot him a quick look.
âYou take in every lost pup you stumble across.â
âNot sure thatâs flattery.â Bast frowned.
âClosest I come.â
âFair enough.â
âIs that a yes?â Savage Jack persisted.
âThat Iâd take him back into our fold?â
âYes.â
âNot up to me. That is the Captainâs decision. But as far as Iâm concerned, heâs not missed a step. Iâve seen what heâs done. And Iâm getting the âsenseâ,â He quoted Savage Jack. âof what heâs done for us in there.â
âEverything he could.â Savage Jack confirmed.
âIâm going to put my arm back round your shoulder, Young Man. Prefer it if you didnât stab me.â
âYou donât have a dagger for me to take.â Savage Jack said blandly.
Bast smiled.
And the hint of one danced over Savage Jackâs face too.
