SEBASTIAN
Bast was clumsily being flown around the Red Manor.
She was straining to fly balanced with him pinning her. His legs wrapping her.
âThis is incredibly awkward, Elsabet.â He laughed aloud. âHow about you land us and Iâll tell you what this is about.â
âYouâll not drag me back to WaterRose.â
âIf I was going to drag you back to WaterRose, why wouldnât I have done that when you came and had chocolate with me.â
âI thought you intended to. Thatâs why I didnât come back the second day.â
âI told you I wouldnât. I wonât.â
She roughly landed them. Near the back garden.
Teetering on his heels, Sebastian fell sideways and managed to roll onto his back to pad her fall.
Her wings shot out and she swept them once to soften the fall.
âThank you.â
âWill you let me go now?â She demanded heatedly.
âMust I? I rather enjoy you writhing against me.â
I havenât felt it in awhile. Feels familiar.
âYes. You must.â She hissed. Eyes still blood red.
âFine.â He opened his arms and freed her.
She nearly levitated off of him.
He smoothly hopped to his feet. âCalm, Elsabet. Iâve no wish to take you prisoner ever again. Youâre free. Tonight and every night.â
âWhat are you celebrating?â Her eyes narrowed. âAn engagement?â
âFor me?â He gave her an astounded look.
You still worry Iâd stray?
âNo! You crazed woman.â
âThen why?â She looked at him askance.
âI loved a woman once-â
âWhat are you saying?â She cut him off.
âWell, Iâm trying Woman! If youâd let me bloody well finish!â He said laughingly.
Crossing her arms, she tapped an impatient food. âI loved a woman once. And I recalled that today happens to be her birthday.â
Her arms fell and she looked at him in confusion. âWhat?â
âThis,â He gestured around him, âis to celebrate your birthday. Amongst other things.â
She was so stunned she didnât ask what other things.
Thankfully.
Iâd not have lied well. And Iâm not ready to tell her yet.
Her face softened in shock. âI think I only told youâ¦Once. Long, long ago.â
âAnd I left you a new gown for your birthday every year.â
âI thought you did that to taunt me.â
âPartly. But also, because I knew secretly you liked the fine materials, if not the colors.â
She blushed.
Because she did. He knew no one had bought her such niceties before and he enjoyed doing it for her.
âWhy are they all here.â She nodded inside.
âFor you.â
âNot to take me back?â
âNo.â Bast shook his head. âIâll never let that happen again.â
âWill you one day apologize for holding me prisoner?â She blurted.
He reared back in shock. âNo!â
Iâd never have gotten to know you any other way.
Never have found out my feelings for you.
She looked like heâd slapped her.
âElsabet.â He sighed. Giving her a long look. âTonight is your birthday. Enjoy the festivities. Be merry.â He caught her hand and opened it. Slapping his dagger into it. âIf anyone tries to take you back to WaterRose you cut their throat with this.â
She looked from the blade to his face.
He caught her chin. âAllow me to see you smile once again.â
Chewing her cheek, she slowly nodded.
âCome.â He caught her hand. âTell your brothers, hello.â
She quietly followed behind him. Step reluctant.
âAnd perhaps have some strawberry wine.â He tossed over his shoulder.
She hit him in the arm.
He laughed.
âYouâre not funny.â
âAs youâve told me countless times!â
âYet, still,â She grumbled. âyou find yourself endlessly amusing.â
âSomeone must.â
