Anastasiaâs words seemed to hit Leoâs nerve, so he immediately retorted, âOf course sheâs my daughter, Ms. Jewell, how could you say something like that?â
Leoâs reaction was beyond Anastasiaâs expectation. âI meanâ¦â
âIâm not gonna let you adopt Pattie. Keep your distance from my daughterâ Leo rejected her bluntly, âHow I raise my kid is my business. You donât get to meddle. If you want a kid, have one yourself.â
With that, Leo got in his car and drove off to the hospital.
After Pattie was taken away by Herman, Pennyâs son fell sick and was holed up in the hospital, with a fever that was not backing down. Leo was in a state of panic. He remembered someone once said that his sonâs arrival to this world was all thanks to Pattie, only with Pattie around, his son would be safe. So Leo rushed to pick up Pattie, Penny initially disagreed, feeling as if she finally got rid of a headache, but considering her son, she had no choice but to let Leo take Pattie back.
Sure enough, as soon as Leo brought Pattie back to the hospital, within an hour, his sonâs fever broke Leo asked Pattie to watch over his son in the ward, and he dragged Penny outside for a talk. âHow many times have I told you. Be nice to Pattie. Why did you hit her again? If this continues, she might really leave, and what will happen to our son then?â
Leo never liked Penny hitting Pattie. Now seizing the moment, he decided to give her a piece of his mind.
Penny pouted, âThis kidâs got some luck. I feel like sheâs brought bad luck to our son.â
âYou just donât believe what that person said. We didnât have a child for so many years, but after adopting Pattie, we had a son. That person even said, our son is a blessing from Pattie, and their fates are intertwined.â
âFine. Penny said, annoyed, âIâll try to hit her less.â
Leo said, âAfter our son is discharged, letâs move.â
âWhy? Weâre living fine here, moving is a hassle.â
âMs. Jewell has taken a liking to Pattie; she even told me she wants to adopt her, Leo, âIâm worried if this goes on, it might lead to problems. You always hit Pattie, sheâs this old and hasnât gone to school yet, and the neighborhoodâs buzzing. saying sheâs not our biological child.â
âPeople can say whatever they want, I canât control them, but moving, thatâs not happening.â
Penny was adamant and then she had a sudden idea. âYou mentioned Ms. Jewell wants to adopt Pattie. Since she likes Pattie so much, let her pay for Pattieâs expenses, not just all talk.â
Leo sighed, âWe have to send Pattie to school.â
âIf sheâs willing to pay, Iâll let Pattie go to school. As for me, Iâm not paying, I have to save for my son.â
Penny pushed Leo away, âOur sonâs fever broke. You take that little girl back. I feel annoyed just looking at her.â
Leo had no choice but to take Pattie back. On the way back, he tentatively asked Pattie, âPattie, what do you think of Ms. Jewell?â
âSheâs nice,â Pattie replied softly.
âDo you want to live with her?â
Pattie lowered her head and said nothing.
Leo said, âPattie, you, Mom, and I are all family. Your mom is just tired from taking care of your brother, thatâs why sheâs cranky. Just try not to annoy her, and Iâll try my best to let you go to school,â
âDad, I understand,â Pattie said maturely. âIâll help with housework, take care of my brother, and not make mom angry.â
âGood girl.â Leo smiled. He also noticed Pattie talked more after living with Anastasia for two days.
âYou must be hungry. Iâll take you for a burger. Your momâs not around, and itâs our little secret. You canât tell your mom okay?â
Pattieâs eyes up, and she nodded. âOkay.â
