RYAN
The day of the party, the Saturday before Halloween, Ryan came out of the bathroom wearing red yoga pants and a white shirt with tons of colorful balls all over her stomach.
She made eye contact with Marco, who was wearing all black with the giant quarter hanging off his shoulders.
âWhat do you think?â he asked, waggling his eyebrows.
Ryan smiled. It wasnât the most creative costume, but it was easy enough. âWeâll do something better next year.â
âIâm fine with whatever you want to do, kitten. Normally I donât even dress up for this thing. Now come on, or weâll be late.â
When they got there, the house was decorated with tons of fake white spiderwebs. Just about everyone was dressed up, and a lot of them had clearly put a lot more effort into their costumes than Marco and Ryan.
Ryan guided them toward a couple of tables full of food and drinks. She stuck to water but piled her plate full of snacks, while Marco poured himself something stronger.
Connie and Roberto came over to say hello, and Ryan saw they were dressed as Bonnie and Clyde. They looked great, especially Robertoâthe gangster look really fit him.
âAww, donât you look cute,â Connie greeted them. As though she couldnât help herself, she reached out and rubbed over the gumball pattern on Ryanâs stomach.
Ryan shrugged. âEverybodyâs going to do that all night, arenât they?â
MARCO
âYou donât look drunk enough,â said Luca after a while, wandering over to hand Marco a fresh glass of whiskey.
Ryan held up the car keys. âIâm driving home, so go ahead.â
Shrugging, Marco took the glass and took a sip. He hadnât been drinking much lately, since Ryan couldnât.
Luca led him outside to where a lot of the men had gathered. âDonât get too drunkââhe snickeredââor else youâll have trouble inserting your quarter later.â
âI donât plan to get that drunk,â said Marco, smiling and taking another measured sip.
âWise choice.â Luca smirked as he tipped his beer up.
âWhatâs that look for?â Marco asked, not sure he wanted to know.
âI remember what Maria was like that late in her pregnancies; she was on me every chance she got.â
Marco crinkled his nose. âI donât want to hear about you having sex with my sister.â
Lucaâs smirk grew. âThen I guess you donât want to hear that it just wasnât my dick she wanted?â
âNo,â said Marco emphatically, trying not to think about it.
Lucas laughed at his discomfort.
Fiona came out and crawled up on Lucaâs lap. âZio,â she said, addressing Marco, âare you going trick-or-treating with us on Halloween?â
Marco nodded. âIâll even wear my costume if you want me to.â
She yawned, and Luca gave her a little pat. âI think itâs time for bed. Hey, Maria?â he called.
Maria walked outside, eyeing her daughter and then scooping her up to take her to bed. Ryan followed a few steps behind Maria, coming over to sit on Marcoâs lap.
âAre you tired?â he asked, bringing both hands up to cradle her back.
âIâm good.â
Luca handed Marco another drink on his way to tuck the kids in and another when he came back. The four adults sat around, just shooting the shit, enjoying the crisp night air.
After a while, feeling the alcohol, Marco nuzzled into Ryanâs neck. âYou look so sexy tonight, kitten.â
âOkay,â said Luca, laughing and pulling Maria to stand up with him. âI think thatâs our cue to leave you lovebirds alone.â
âI like being alone with you,â Marco admitted, pressing a kiss under Ryanâs ear.
âYouâre drunk,â she laughed.
He kissed her neck and pulled her closer. âI think youâre just as sexy either way.â
She made a noise of half-amusement, half-arousal, and glanced around. âI think the partyâs dying down. Let me take you home.â
He nodded, helping her to her feet before standing with only a little bit of sway.
âDid you have fun tonight, kitten?â he asked in the car.
âI did,â she said.
âI told Fiona that we would go trick-or-treating with them,â he remembered. âHope you donât mind.â
She pulled into the driveway. âNot at all. I already told Maria that we would.â
Marco stumbled his way through the house and up to their bedroom, refusing to let Ryan help for fear that he would accidentally knock her over.
Once he was safely in the bed, he pulled her close and nestled his face into her shoulder. âI love you, kitten,â he mumbled, sleep pulling him in quickly.
RYAN
Marco was recovered from his hangover by the time they headed out to go trick-or-treating with Fiona and Louis as theyâd promised.
Ryan only teased him a little bit for getting drunk at the party. She figured heâd deserved to let loose, and it had been really cute.
When they arrived, the kids looked adorable all dressed up, but none of the four adults had bothered to put on their own costumes.
Fiona kept tapping Mariaâs stomach with her âwandâ as they walked from house to house, looking frustrated when nothing happened.
âWhatâs wrong?â Luca asked.
She sighed. âI thought Iâd try and make Mommy have a baby girl.â
âYou know thatâs not a real magic wand,â her brother chided her, swinging his bag of candy.
âI know that,â she said, rolling her eyes. âBut I had to try; I donât want to be outnumbered.â
âSomething you need to share, sis?â asked Marco, eyeing Mariaâs flat stomach.
âNo,â Maria laughed.
Fiona crossed her arms. âDoes my happiness mean nothing to you people?â
Maria bent down. âWell, we can either stand here and discuss it, or we can continue trick-or-treating; which would you prefer?â
âCandy, please.â
âWise choice,â said Maria, patting her butt as she ran away.
Luca offered his wife a smile. âIâll get her, babe.â
Maria sighed and hung back with Ryan, walking behind the others. âWeâve been trying for a couple years now; I just donât want to get Fionaâs hopes up.â
Ryan was surprised; sheâd had no idea. âWhat does your doctor say?â
Maria shrugged helplessly. âUnexplained infertility. All my tests have been fine.â
Ryan nodded. âMy friend Anna is an excellent ob-gyn; I can give you her number if youâd like a second opinion.â
âThank you. We didnât have this problem with Louis or Fiona; I donât understand it.â
âSometimes these things happen.â Ryan felt bad; she hadnât even planned to get pregnant, and now here she was. âSeems like people get pregnant when they arenât trying more than when they actually are. Itâs the stress of it all.â
Maria shook herself. âAnyway. Youâre getting so close to your big day! Are you ready to be a mom?â
Ryan glanced ahead at Marco, who was holding Fionaâs hand as she reached up to ring the doorbell of the next house. âI think so.â Marco glanced back and made a silly face at Ryan before blowing her a kiss.
âYeah,â Ryan said, voice gaining strength. âI think weâre both going to be really great parents.â
