"What do you mean, you still get the texts?" Thomas asked in a dead-serious voice, and I handed him my phone. "Aren't you jumping to conclusions? Even if this texts weren't for the fights, who said it would be for the disappearances? And why would they want to do that?" Elliot asked in a skeptical voice. I sank in the sofa from his words.
He was right. It made no sense. But why did it feel so wrong?
"It doesn't matter, we have nothing to do we that, so just stop overthinking this." Reagan told me picking up the remote and scrolling down the movies' list.
Klay looked at Reagan and then shrugged, focusing on the T.V as well.
Thomas handed me back my phone, "This may be really nothing," he remarked, however it felt like there was more he wanted to say.
I looked at the texts again, then at the guys. Reagan was giving me that look again. The one which warned me that if I do anything stupid, I'll have him on my head.
But if these texts were the link to those disappearances, I had to do something.
After all, it was my job to make Woodblock High safe.
And not only for the girls, but for the boys as well.
I shook my head, looking down to my lap as the others turned to the movie picking mission.
My phone suddenly rang, startling me, but it was my house's phone number, probably my aunt. Obviously, who else will it be? Idiot.
"Yeah?" I signaled the boys to be quiet, because the last thing I needed is the my aunt will suspect I'm around boys, which means I'm getting into another fight.
"Rhi, it's Belle, you better come home real quick- you uncle is here and seem to be freaking out about something," Belle told me, making me silently curse and get up.
"Where are you going?" Caleb asked me, looking at me with a puzzled look. "My uncle needs me," I answer and quickly go towards the door.
"I'll drive you home," Reagan said, but I shake my head.
"It's fine, my house is not that far away. He seems unconvinced, but I'm already out of his house before he can object.
What was the problem with my uncle now?
*
"Uncle Bart?" I called out as soon as I got home. On my way, I started to come out with bad situations he might be in. Did another boy went missing? Did they finally have information about it?
"Oh, thank god you're here, I have to go- my son needs me." I nodded at Belle's words, not waiting for her to get out the house and went looking for my uncle.
He was in the leaving room, sitting on the couch in front of the TV exactly how he was on that day he first asked me for my help.
"Rhi, I need your help again." He said as soon as he noticed me standing there.
I lifted a brow, "Yeah, I figured," I said and went to sit next to him. "What is it now?"
My uncle sighed, rubbing his face with his palm and returning his gaze to me.
"The Mainwest Academy's headmaster is giving me trouble again," I frowned, not familiar with the name. "Mainwest?" I asked.
"Remember the all-girls academy from the winter festival?" I nodded after a moment of thinking, "Well, their headmaster convinced our school board that having just one girl in the is ridicules, and it's not much of a testing the waters," My uncle told me, rubbing his temple. I waited for him to continue, already dreading the rest of what he has to say.
"They are going to send more girls to our school," He finally dropped the bomb. "What?! But, it's not safe yet, you saw how they didn't care about me getting beat up! And we have those boys' disappearances on our head, what if they'll start kidnap the girls? It will be even more big of a story and, and-" "Rhi, calm down!" I closed my mouth shut, looking at my uncle in concern.
Uncle Bert sighed, "Please, I need you to be calm one out of both of us. Can you do that for me?" I scowled at his words. "Uncle Bert, since when there is a calm one between us?" He smiled at my words, even though I was serious.
"Listen, I need you to make sure the boys accept the girls as best as you can to our school. Okay?" My uncle asked me, looking more like my calm, serious uncle than a sugar-high five year old.
"Trust me, the boys are the least of our problems."
*
And just like I told Uncle Bart, the students were the least of our problems, and when a group of seven girls entered the school in the middle of the year of school, they were all intrigued. Some even asked me if I can get them the number of one of the girls, but I said I didn't know any of them, so it was entirely up to them.
I could see that some of the girls were a bit uncomfortable with all the attention, but knew they will soon get used to them. Or maybe it was just me?
The boys and I were sitting in the cafeteria, watching as the group of girls were sitting together in a corner, some looking terrified for their lives.
"Maybe you should go and greet them," Caleb suggested quietly to my ear. I gave him a look, "I've never had girl friends before." I said, somewhat anxious to talk to them. "You'll be fine, you are Rhiannon Martins after all." He pointed out, giving me a smile. I sighed, and after a few moment of debate I finally stood up, and started to make my way towards the girls.
When I reached them, they all looked at me. I looked back at the boys, smiling as I saw Klay raising a thumb up and grinning like an idiot. What, did he thought I was getting them all dates or something. I rolled my eyes and return my gaze to the girls.
"Hey, I'm Rhiannon, but you can call me Rhi. It's nice to have more girls here, I was getting annoyed with all of this boys around," I said, laughing nervously.
A girl with blond hair nodded, "Oh right, you're the first girl who came here. Nice to meet you, I guess, I'm Anna." I blinked, and tried to keep the smile on my face.
Nice to meet you, I guess...? Was that some kind of a girls' code I didn't know of?
Another girl, this time smiling, introduced herself as Shannon, a redhead with brown eyes.
The other introduced themselves as well, but expect for Shannon didn't look that happy to see me. "So um.. I just wanted to tell you that if any of the boys bother you, come find me and I'll make sure to hit them so hard the their di-" I stopped my rant before I said anything that might weird them out. "Right, um..." I waved at them and turned back towards my friends.
"Well?" Klay asked, jumping with his feet on his chair. I shook my head, "I think I'm going to puke," Thomas smiled at me and Klay looked somewhat disappointed. I glared at him, "If you wanted me to get you a date, you will be very sad to know how my foot is going to go straight into your-" "Rhi," Thomas cut me off, but he seemed amused. I put my straw in my mouth and drank my coke quietly, pouting at him.
Just then, I saw Oliver running towards our table, and I now noticed he wasn't here before. And Elliot too, it would seem.
"Hey guys, have you seen Elliot?" I raised a brow, looking at the boys as Oliver waited for an answer.
"No, I thought his classes starts late today," Reagan said, already taking out his phone and probably calling the grumpy boy. "Yeah, but it started an hour ago," Oliver answered, coming to sit in the empty chair next to me and Thomas.
"Maybe he didn't wake up?" I asked Oliver, suggesting a possible theory. "No, Elliot never sleeps in," He said in worry. "And he doesn't answer his phone either," Reagan told us after a moment.
"What if she..." Oliver said, exchanging looks with the boys. I looked at Caleb and saw he was as confused as I was.
Klay shook his head, looking the most serious I saw him since I first met him. "I thought she was out of town," He mentioned. Thomas looked at the table, thinking hard.
"Well, we can't go and check on him because we'll get in trouble, so I can try and ask my brother." The boys nodded, and I frowned. "Guys, what's going now?" I asked as Thomas called his brother. Reagan shook his head, "Not now, Rhi," I scowled at him, not like the fact they won't tell me what was going on. Even if Elliot and I weren't really friends, this situation still concerned me.
"Just tell me what you think is wrong with Elliot, maybe I could help-" "For f*ck's sake, stay out of this!" Oliver yelled, making a few heads turn our direction. I froze and looked at him quietly. I knew he was worried and scared, so that must've been the reason he yelled, but I still didn't like being screamed at. Oliver, like Elliot, probably didn't see me as his friend, but I tried to be friends with him.
"He's not answering, he must be in a meeting." Thomas said, making us tense from his words.
"I'm going to his house," Oliver stated. "No, you can't-" "Elliot might be in trouble, so I'm going!" Oliver said, not leaving room for Thomas to object. He sighed. "If you get in trouble again, you could get expelled. Maybe someone else should go?" He asked, looking around us.
I stood up and said, "I'll go. I can say I got my period, they let me go without a second glance." Oliver glared at me, but I glared back, annoyed. "like it or not, for me you are all my friends- even you and Elliot. If something is wrong with him and I'm the only one who can go without making anyone pay attention or cause troubles, then I will go. Understand? And I don't care if you think I'm not one of you guys." I let out everything that was on my heart, not caring what he had to say in return.
"Here," Thomas threw towards me keys and I caught it with one hand. "They blue one is for my car, and the yellow is for Elliot's house." I nodded, looking at all of them.
"I'll call you when I get there," I reassured them, and before going I turned to Oliver again. "You have to trust me. I'll keep Elliot safe." I nodded once, and then started to walk.
Whatever trouble or danger Elliot was in, I will save him. Just like I will do to all of the boys.
*
I got out of the school without a bit of a difficulty, and almost ran to Thomas' car. I wanted to get to Elliot as soon as I can, because by the way the boys talked I feared something very bad. I feared Elliot was abused. I never saw any sign of it, but then again never checked for either. Elliot almost never talked to me. In fact, I couldn't remember the last time he did.
They talk about a 'she' who was supposedly out of town, so I started to build theories in my head as I drove to his house.
It felt like years, but I finally reached Elliot's house. With a fast-beating heart, I considered knocking first, but then quickly decided to just open the door with the key I got from Thomas.
Elliot's house looked like a normal house, but it felt somewhat... empty.
I tried looking for anyone who might be in the house, but couldn't hear anything. I went up the stairs, assuming that his room will be there. I opened and closed doors fast and quietly, until I finally reached Elliot's room.
My heart skipped a beat and I froze as I stared at Elliot, laying on the floor looking all beat up. It was exactly the scenario I was afraid of.
"Oh my god, Elliot!" I ran to him, trying to shake him and see if he was conscious. "Elliot, can you hear me? It's Rhi," I rub my fast on his chest up and down, trying to see if he responds to pain. Suddenly he grabbed my hand, stopping me. And then he started to cry. Full on crying, sobbing and all. I stared at him at first, not knowing what to do. There was only blood coming from his hands from what I could tell, maybe his back too, but there was not sign of any sever damage to his head. So I leaned over him and hugged him, rubbing his hair doing my best to comfort him.
"It's okay, it's okay," I whispered, rocking him softly in my arms. "no one is going to hurt you anymore, I promise."
Suddenly, I heard the door behind me creak. "Who the hell are you?!" I turned and saw a short woman, her hair a mess and so are her clothes. She had blond curls like Elliot, and I assumed she was his mother. Elliot froze and went silent. She must of done it to him.
"My name is Rhi, and I'm going to make sure you will rot in prison for what you did." I assured her. "Come on Eli, can you stand?" I asked him softly, and groaned in pain and shook from fear.
"Where do you think you're going with my son? Get out before I kill you!" I looked at her as she strode in a drunken manner, and when she tried to punch I dodged her quickly and punched her face as hard as I could, and she dropped to the floor. I checked to see she was indeed unconscious, and then returned to Elliot. "Rhi?" he mumbled and started towards where he thought I was. I wrapped my hands around him, helping him to stand up. It was painful, I could tell, but I had to get him out of here. "I'm here, I'll keep you safe." I promised again, and helped him as we walked down the stairs towards Thomas' car. "Why are you here?" Elliot asked me. He tried to make his voice harsh, but it ended up being vulnerable instead. I think he noticed it himself.
"The boys were worried- and so was I- when you didn't show up to school. I told them I'll go check on you, since it was easier for me to get out with no trouble." I explained to him and led him to the passenger's seat. He moaned quietly from the pain, making me apologies. I ran around to the driver's seat and told him, "I'm taking you to the hospital." Immediately, Elliot sat up. "No, please, not the hospital." I glared at him, but my gaze softened as I looked at him and I sighed. If I notice he'll get worse, then I'll take him to the hospital. For now, I'll take him to Thomas' house.
"Okay, fine- relax, no hospitals. Alright? Don't get riled up too much, you're bleeding a lot from your hands," I noted, looking for something to tie on his hands. Elliot leaned his head back, and I quickly started the car after tying a scarf around both of his hands.
"How are you feeling? Try not to fall asleep for me, okay?" I muttered and tried to take my phone out to call the guys, but then decided to do it after I get Elliot to Thomas' home safe and sound. Even if they were probably worried sick, I had to take care of Elliot first.
A few minutes from Thomas' house, Elliot started to shake. "What, what's wrong? Elliot, what's wrong?" I found myself panicking a driving faster.
"She wasn't supposed to be home for a while, so I didn't clean the house like she asked me... I thought I had more time, but..." He stopped muttering, and more tears trailed down his face. It broke my heart, and I wanted to join him and cry. How could his own f*cking mother do something like that? I felt my blood heating up, burning. She won't even touch him again, and I'll do whatever it takes to make sure of that. I'll even break her arms if I had to.
I took his hand in mine and held it, "She won't get any closer to you ever again," I stated. Elliot turned his face towards me. "How can you be so sure?" He asked, and I parked the car and looked at him as I took his belt off. "Because I'll kill her if she will." Elliot stared at me for a few seconds, and I went out of the car to help him get out.
I looked for the right key with one hand, my other arm around Elliot. "The red one," He muttered, leaning his head on my shoulder. I opened it quickly, before he'll lose his consciousness.
I laid him on the sofa in the living room, and ran towards were I saw the first aid box last time the boys used it on me, and then ran back to Elliot.
"I need you to take off your shirt," I said, clearing my throat. I'll have another time to be embarrassed, because now was not the time.
I helped take the shirt off, carefully so it won't hurt to much. I took the scarf off first and started to treat his hands.
Since I got into so many fights in the past, I had to treat myself so my aunt won't notice. It would only make her worry more about me. At least now, I knew how to help Elliot because of those experiences.
When I finished with his hands, I moved to the rest of the wounds. Thankfully, it seemed like he wasn't hurt to bad.
"I'll bring you a blanket," I told him and stood up, but he grabbed my hand for the second time today. "Thank you," he mumbled, his eyes half closed. I smiled and nodded. "Get some rest now. I've got you." Not even a second passed, and Elliot's eyes were already closed.
I started at him, wondering why would the boys let him live with that woman. I couldn't jump to conclusions too fast. I'll have to ask them about this. But for now- I'll keep Elliot safe.
Because that's what friends do.
