CHAPTER 115
I entered a quaint cafe and immediately found my friends. It wasnât difficult, since they were the biggest group in the place, and two tables had to be stuck together for them. I smiled and strode up to their table.
âGrace, over here,â Denzel beckoned. âSaved you a seat.â
âThanks,â I said as I sat between him and Cecilia. âThe new guy isnât here yet?â I asked, looking at Emilia.
She was looking at her phone. âNo, but he should be here any minute.â
Denzel called over a waiter for me, and I ordered an egg and cheese bagel with some water. They had apparently all ordered before me, since I had been running late and not answering the phone because Iâd been on a route.
âI want to warn you guys,â Emilia said. âPlease donât be mean to him.â
âWhat? Why would I be rude?â Pauline smiled. âHe canât be too bad, since he got you out of your shell. Iâll just ask him a few questions.â
âPlease, letâs not be rude to a potential new friend. Iâm sure the meeting will go well,â Justin said.
âThank you, Justin,â she smiled softly.
âLook, Iâm just tired, so Iâll be chill,â I shrugged. âI almost had an accident with Turtonator.â
They all turned toward me.
âOh shit,â Denzel gasped.
âAre you okay?!â Cece asked worriedly.
âOh, Iâm fine,â I hurriedly clarified. âI meant that he almost attacked another trainer that was just passing by. Sorry for not being clear.â
âArceus, do not scare us like that,â my girlfriend exhaled as she gripped my arm. I hurriedly apologized again.
âTheyâll probably complain about it online,â Pauline laughed. Now that she knew I hadnât been in danger, she had immediately loosened up.
âI donât think itâs a laughing matter,â I sighed. âHe could be traumatized.â
âHeâll go through a lot worse if he wants this job,â she simply stated. âComes with the territory.â
I wanted to retort, but Emilia interrupted us and pointed toward the entrance. Vincent was a short teen with long, wavy brown hair, thin lips, and large eyes. I observed as he confidently walked toward us with a smile.
âHe sure seems happy,â I muttered quietly enough so no one would hear.
He scanned the table as he walked, but his stare lingered on me longer, probably because of how I looked. Trainer scars were common, but most werenât as pronounced as mine, especially with how young I was.
âHey everyone, sorry Iâm late, I lost track of time when I was editing a video. My nameâs Vincent Campbell,â he introduced himself with a smile.
âOh shit, you have a channel? No way, man!â Denzel exclaimed. âYouâre gonna have to give me the name later.â
âMost coordinators have them, remember?â Emilia clarified. âTake a seat, Vincent.â
The boy sat, and we all introduced ourselves one by one. I noticed immediately that Vincent was a very extroverted individualâ even more so than Denzel was. In fact, he and my best friend broke the ice immediately and seemed to get along very well after interacting for just a few minutes. I introduced myself last.
âIâm Grace Pastel,â I smiled. âNice to meet the one that got Emi started on her coordinator stuff.â
âGrace, hm?â He said. âCan I just comment on your scars? You look really cool with them. It makes you stand outâ¦â
Vincent didnât finish his sentence, as the entire table froze.
âExcuse me?â Cecilia asked, her tone icy.
âVincentâ¦â Emilia winced.
âErm, did I say somethingââ
Pauline slammed a palm against the table, causing the customers around us to look on with worried gazes. âThe fuck did you just say?â
âIâ Iââ
âOh, so now we stutter, huh? You sure seemed content to run your mouthââ
âPauline,â I interrupted.
âNo, Grace, this guyâsââ
âItâs fine,â I said, discreetly nodding toward Emilia. She was staring down at her hands. âHey, Vincent,â I called out.
âIâm sorry, I didnâtâ I mean, I still donât know what was wrong, but if you tell me, Iâll apologize properly.â
I stared at Vincent, and noticed that he did appear to be apologetic. He was beginning to sweat nervously, his tone was nowhere near as smooth and confident as it had been seconds earlier, and I could hear the faint tap of his shoe bouncing against the floor. I had considered that he had been faking it for a second, but he did appear genuine. It looked like Emi had picked a good friend, at the very least. He wasnât tricking her here.
I exhaled as I calmly drummed my fingers against the table. I needed to approach this carefully. This was Emiliaâs new friend. I needed to be nice.
Even though that comment had infuriated me.
âLook, Vincent,â I started. âIâm not going to tell you how I got these. I donât want you to treat me differently, or to feel bad for meâ I mean, we barely know each other. But you need to realize that this isnât a game.â
âI⦠I knew it wasnât a game,â he said.
âYou might have known, but I donât think you truly incorporated that fact,â I continued. âTo you, theyâre just something I have. But consider this, Vincent. These had to
get on me. My skin was seared until it was irreparably scarred.â
Vincentâs eyes widened, and he grimaced. The words might have seemed simple, but after seeing his reaction, I knew I had been right. Vincent hadnât even considered the simple fact that a burn like this didnât get on you for no reason. It was painful and traumatic. I had been the victim of this thought process before becoming a trainer too. Plenty of people had scars in the battles I used to watch on television, and I did think some of them were cool. That had been before.
Behind every single one was a painful memory.
âAh, shit,â he swore. âI was being an asshole, wasnât I?â
âYes,â Denzel nodded. âBut we can call it water under the bridge if thatâs alright with you, Grace?â
âYeah, thatâs fine,â I said.
âI guess I was thinking from a coordinator's point of view,â Vincent said. âThe distinguishing yourself thing⦠itâs a thing that every coordinator tries to do to separate themselves from the herd, so I meant it as a compliment. Iâm sorry. I swear, I wasnât discriminating against trainers or anything.â
âThink before you speak,â Pauline hissed. âIâll let it go for Emilia, but youâre on thin ice. No one fucks with my friends.â
âIt wasnât intentional, Pauline,â Justin tried.
She clicked her tongue. âWhatever.â
âWhat do you mean by discriminating against trainers?â I asked.
Emilia spoke up, seemingly having recovered from the groupâs little spat. âSome coordinators see trainers with disdain,â she explained. âMostly because weâ you get a lot of things for free.â
âThey also say that you guys act like youâre better than them,â Vincent added. âWhich youâll easily know is a load of bullshit if you spent five minutes with the first coordinator you find on the Walk.â
âThe Walk?â Denzel asked.
âThe Coordinatorâs Walk,â Vincent said. âThe street leading up to the Hearthome Contest Hall.â
Vincent went on to explain a lot of the city to us and the main attractions, which I appreciated because my dad would be here tomorrow, and I wanted to do a lot of things with him. The conversation then moved on to another topic.
âSo, howâd you two meet?â Cecilia asked Vincent and Emilia.
âOh, it was actually on the Walk, funnily enough. Some girl called Jasmine wasââ
âVincent,â Emilia said.
âWhat?â
âYou can skip over the details.â
Pauline frowned. âNo, go ahead. Tell me about this Jasmine girl.â
âUhâ¦â Vincent hesitated, stuck between a rock and a hard place. Paulineâs murderous glare seemingly won out, though, and he continued. âShe was trying to trick Emilia. Asked her if she was staying at a hotel so that she and her friends could film a video there, and when she said no, sheâ¦â
He didnât finish his sentence.
âI think I can get the picture,â Pauline said, looking at Emiâs pained expression. âWhy didnât you tell me?â
âI wanted to handle it myself,â Emilia sighed. âI can do it. I know you want to help, but Iâve got to learn to do this stuff myself. You wonât always be there.â
Pauline chewed on her words for a few seconds. âOkay.â
âReally?!â Emilia beamed, hugging the other girlâs arm. âThank you so much.â
âSânothing,â she grumbled. âIf we walk up on her when Iâm with you, thoughâ¦â
âYou wonât have to hold back,â Emi nodded.
âI think I want to go see what the Coordinatorâs Walk looks like later,â Pauline said nonchalantly. âHey, what does this Jasmine gal look like?â
âNow youâre purposefully looking for trouble,â Justin sighed with a slight smile.
âLook, if itâs worth anything, I think you guys are way nicer than your average coordinator,â Vincent said, probably trying to change the subject.
âDonât kiss my ass,â Pauline grumbled. âMakes you look and sound fake. I know you donât like me.â
âHe just canât win with you, canât he,â I smiled.
âIâm serious!â He exclaimed. âYâall seem pretty nice. People normally wouldnât have given me another chance after my fuck up earlier.â
âThey are nice,â Emilia said. âEven Pauline. You just have to get to know her.â
âSo you mentioned that coordinators hate trainers earlier,â Denzel mused. âI honestly donât see the same dislike toward you guys in our line of work.â
âSome coordinators,â he specified. âLike Jasmine, for example. But the majority wonât really care. Theyâre too busy competing with each other.â
Cecilia let out a tired sigh. âWhat a cutthroat world. It seems exhausting.â
âTrainers and coordinators do seem fundamentally different,â I contemplated with a nod.
âTrue,â Denzel agreed. âTrainers can be toxic to each other, but at the end of the day, we have each otherâs backs.â
âProbably because we donât actually compete with each otherâ at least not in an official mannerâ until we get to the Conference,â I said. âImagine if people had to battle each other to get a badge.â
âOkay, yeah, I can see how thatâd degenerate very quickly,â Denzel said.
âPlus, we travel together in the routes,â Cecilia added. âHarsh experiences create bonds. Coordinators have none of that.â
âDoesnât mean they have to be fake pieces of shit,â Pauline said.
âThe performances make it worth it,â Vincent said.
âYou ever been in a performance?â She asked aggressively.
âEmi told us aboutââ Denzel spoke up until Pauline interrupted him with a single stare.
âTwice, and none of them were for a ribbon,â he quickly answered. âThe first one, I lost horribly. The second one, I lost. Also horribly.â
We all chuckled lightly. I was glad I gave Vincent another chance. Emilia seemed overjoyed that we were getting along. She had probably been worried she would have had to lose her only coordinator friend. Plus, he didnât seem to know much about us because he was largely disconnected from trainer news, which was a positive in my book. We continued talking for an hour, although most of the conversation had turned toward content creation. Denzel and Emilia wanted to do a âcollab,â and he also wanted to shout out her channel to give her a head start. He had fifty-thousand subscribers now, and his channel was still growing exceptionally quickly. I wondered if it was going to get him unwanted attention from other coordinators, especially with what Vincent had told us about how a good number of them hated trainers. There could be some jealousy issues there.
âWell, it was nice meeting you, Vincent,â I told him as we exited the cafe.
âLikewise. Sorry again about earlier. And Denzel, donât forget to contact me! Weâve got to get that video filmed before yâall leave Hearthome!â Vincent yelled as he left.
âSure!â he grinned.
âWhat is the video even going to be about? I spaced out,â Pauline asked.
âTheyâre going to make me try to come up with a performance with no prep time and act as the judges. Iâll most likely fail horribly, which could be good content. Emilia will upload the video, and Vincent will help her edit it. Itâll be a good base to build up from.â
Emiliaâs smile was so bright I almost felt the need to cover my eyes. âThis is going to be so good!â She squealed, sneaking in between Denzel and Pauline as she wrapped her arms around theirs. âNow Iâve just got to keep working hard for my performance. I'm close to a breakthrough with Shadow Ball.â
âOh right, that reminds me!â Denzel exclaimed. âI still need to borrow your Shadow Ball TM!â
âBorrowing TMs, huh?â I teased.
âWhat? Itâs the smart thing to do! Iâve got to save for two evolutionary stones!â
âIâm kidding, Iâm kidding,â I chortled. âAnyway, are you guys ready?â
Pauline and Justin looked at me with fired-up expressions. Justinâs Audino was set to arrive tomorrow, and they were going to sign up for Fantinaâs gym. Thereâd probably be a decently long wait time, so he hoped that since it was a bred Pokemon, itâd be easy to train so that he could use it in battle. I considered it a very interesting tactic, considering ghosts and normal type attacks couldnât hit each other for any amount of significant damage. Something about the two type energies canceled each other out. Apparently, the Audino he had ordered would have the Regenerator ability too, which was incredibly busted, since it meant that the Pokemon would continuously heal its injuries when it got a chance to relax, and the process was further sped up when it was recalled. The longer they stuck in their Pokeballs, the more damage they repaired, which meant that you couldnât just recall your Pokemon and instantly rerelease them, but it still had a lot of powerful applications. Tangrowth could have had it too, if I had gotten lucky, but Chlorophyll would come into its own as soon as we managed to learn Sunny Day.
Cecilia paid for a taxi, and we were driven to Fantinaâs gym, which was the usual stadium-like building, and we waited for Justin and Pauline to go through the queue to sign up. The lobby was unusually active, but it was probably because Hearthome was a big city. People were squeezing past each other to get to the spectating area.
âWhatâd you find out about Fantina earlier?â Denzel asked me.
âThat sheâs going to be tough,â I shrugged. âGhosts are a bitch to fight. Expect the battle to be long and exhausting.â
âJust how I like âem,â he said confidently.
âPlease, at least do some surface-level research,â I told both Cecilia and Denzel. âThere actually arenât that many Pokemon to learn about.â
âHow many?â Cece asked.
âTwenty.â
âWe have different definitions of ânot many,ââ Denzel shook his head.
I sighed. They were both lost causes. âWell, at least we get to watch Justinâs and Paulineâs battle before our own this time.â
âTheyâre a badge below us. I donât expect it to help that much,â Cecilia shrugged.
âIf it was any other type, I would have agreed,â Denzel said. âBut Grace is right here. Itâll help to see how ghosts operate. I mean, the only one Iâve ever seen was that Mismagius.â
âAnd Dusknoir,â my girlfriend somberly added. âItâs true that they are decently rare, so I suppose it wouldnât hurt.â
Suddenly, I heard huge cheers emanate from the battlefield.
âMust be a good battle going on,â I smiled. âShould we go see?â
Denzel stood on his tiptoes and craned his neck. âLooks packed to the brim, I donât think weâll get through.â
After fifteen minutes, Justin and Pauline came back.
âWeâre on in five days, in the afternoon,â Justin proudly declared. âPaulineâs first, since she so desperately wanted to goââ
âYou should be happy Iâm going first,â she huffed. âIâm letting you get some intel.â
âThatâs when Chase is coming back,â Cecilia pondered.
âChase wonât come watch,â I said.
âHeâd probably say something likeâ I donât have time to waste on watching these low leveled battles,â Cece recalled fondly.
âSeems like a real angel,â Pauline said. âAnyway, what now?â
âWell, a few companies answered me, and Iâve got my first meeting inâ¦â Denzel trailed off as he grabbed his Poketch. âThree hours. I was wondering if any of you could help me out? Rehearse a little? Figure out what theyâd do to fuck me over?â
âSay no more,â Pauline said. âEmi, Cece, come with.â
âActually, Iâm going to train,â Cece declared.
âSo am I,â Justin nodded.
âAny answers on your side, Grace?â My best friend asked.
âI checked on the bus. One answer from that shoe company I talked to you about, and the meetingâs next week. But nothing from the Poketch Company.â
Cecilia crossed her arms. âIf I had to guess, theyâve probably read your message, but theyâre deliberately taking their time to answer.â
âWhy would they do that?â
âWell, you made them wait, right? It might be their way of letting you know that they didnât appreciate it.â
I sighed. âThey did
send their first email when we were in Snowpoint. I could have answeredâ¦â
âAnd now that theyâve seen youâve answered back, they know you want to work with them. That means the balance of powerâs back in their favor,â Emilia nodded. âBe careful.â
âI will, donât worry,â I reassured her. âI thought they were supposed to be nice. You guys go do your stuff, Iâm gonna hang out here and decide what to do.â
We all bid each other farewell and went our separate ways. I considered my options before deciding to go off and train too. Maybe I could find one of the arenas and battle some trainers there with Tangrowth, or I could go back on Route 208 or visit Amity Square to work on Togeticâs Wish. Well, the closest option was Amity Square, so Iâd go thereâ
A girl with glasses and jet black hair paced through the lobby, followed by a group of⦠fans? One of them carried a banner with the word âLETâS GO LAURENâ written on it in a fancy, almost unreadable font, but the girl seemed to pay them no mind. In fact, she wasnât even listening to what they were saying since she was wearing ear pods and her head was nodding to the rhythm of what I assume was music.
The name Laurenâ¦
Wait, was this Craigâs sister? They certainly shared the same hair color, and their eyes and noses were the same shape. I discreetly followed the small but dedicated group, who were asking for Laurenâs autograph. I remembered from my research online that her fans werenât as numerous as other trainers in the Circuit, but they were devoted to finding out every crumb of information about her. They reminded me of some of the fans coordinators had. They could get very rabid, even driving some to quit the industry after they were found to be dating someone. I was surprised to see that she was even out and about in broad daylight, however. She usually battled as early or late as possible to attract the least attention. What was she doing here in the middle of the afternoon?
Lauren released a Duosion, who hovered above her, and the people following her clenched their heads and backed off. Was that even allowedâ¦? The psychic type seemed unharmed, which meant that she hadnât used it in her battle. I couldnât be one hundred percent sure it had actually been her battling, but the fact that some of her fans carried banners to encourage her certainly made me lean that way.
Well, I had promised Craig that Iâd tell his sister to call him if I met her.
I took a deep breath and quickly approached her, tapping her shoulder. Duosion moved around in its goo-like substance, and Lauren stopped in her tracks. She turned toward me.
âHello?â I hesitantly said.
She just stared at me, and then at Duosion. And then at me again. After what seemed like an eternity, she took off her ear pods.
âYou⦠seem alright. Can I help you?â
Her voice was so quiet it was practically inaudible, especially with my busted ear drum.
âErm, Iâm Grace. I know your brother Craig. I know this is sudden, but he asked me to call him if I ever met you.â
Her meek expression changed to an exasperated one for a split second. âOh⦠what do you think, Duosion?â She asked. After a few seconds, she talked again. She didnât seem to be in any pain from the telepathy, but I doubted that it was because she was used to it enough. No matter how many times you spoke to your psychic types, you would at least feel some pain if you had only owned it for a few months. Lauren either had a very high pain tolerance, or was simply good at hiding the fact that she was suffering a massive headache. âTrustworthy? Youâre right, she doesnât seem like a stalkerâ¦â
âYouâve been stalked?â I asked worriedly. âAre you okay?â
âDuring my stay in the cityâ¦â she whispered. âThey keep following me, but theyâre harmless.â
âOh. Well, I wonât follow you,â I said. âJust let me do this favor for your brother? I owe him a whole lot.â
âFine,â she sighed.
I dialed his number, and he thankfully answered. For all I knew, he could have been flying off somewhere.
âGrace! Long time no see. Whatâs up?â He asked cheerfully.
âNo⦠um, Iâve got your sister in front of me. Iâll hand her the phone.â
I ignored his freak-out and gave Lauren my Poketch. As soon as she brought the phone to her ear, her whole demeanor changed.
âI thought I told you to stop trying to contact me!â She yelled angrily into the phone. Duosion worriedly jumped around in its goo. âShut your mouth! I want nothing to do with you!â
I felt like I shouldnât have been hearing this.
âIf Iâm seen with you, people will think Iâm getting help from you, you shitter!â She screamed. âNo! Noâ donât you dare fly here. No! I donât want to see you!â
There was another pause.
âIâm not sticking around. I got my badge, and Iâm leaving,â she said. âAll the bullshit messages you sent me about being more public only got me some creepy fans. I hate you.â
I awkwardly stared at the floor, hoping this conversation would be over. This wasnât what I had expected at all.
Lauren sighed. âHer? Fine⦠if you say so,â she said, in a surprising change of heart. âAs long as you donât actually come here.â
Then, she stared at me and seemingly remembered that I was hearing everything being said, since Craig had probably mentioned me by name. âOkay⦠yeah⦠Iâll stick around for a little bit,â she muttered. âNothing happened. Just⦠bye.â
Lauren handed me my Poketch back. âSorry you had to see me that way,â she continued with her meek voice. It was like she had done a complete one-eighty, but maybe that was how close she was with her brother. âCraig just gets on my nerves.â
âHey, I wonât tell,â I shrugged. âSo I guess thatâs it.â
She nodded. âCraig told me that you and your friends were goodâ¦â Lauren quietly said. Her eyes suddenly lit ablaze with a passion I knew too well. âIâm sticking around until I see all of you battle Fantina.â
I smiled. âAre you sure? You seemed like you wanted to leave badly.â
âThereâs a tournament in Solaceon I want to sign up for,â she muttered. I perked up at the mention of a tournament, and she continued. âItâs in a bit, so I should still be able to make it. And so should you, if you don't lose against Fantina. You losing would be disappointing, though...â
âI won't lose,â I declared. âNone of us will. I should probably tell my friends about all of this. Um, it was nice to meet you?â
âNo. Donât tell more people about me,â she shook her head.
âOh. Um, okay?â
My friends were cool, thoughâ¦
Lauren nodded, giving me her number to tell her when our gym battles would take place. Afterward, she put her ear pods back in, and walked off with her Duosion as she bobbed her head to music.
