CHAPTER 101
We were recognized almost instantly.
Eterna city didnât have a bustling nightlife like Jubilife and Sunyshore, so I expected to at least make it to the Pokemon Center before kicking up a fuss.
I had obviously been wrong. We were still on the cityâs outskirts. The less-dense parts of Eterna were mostly filled with expensive family homes from its last expansion a few years ago, but it was the weekend, so some people were still out and about, either driving or walking back home from a night out in the city. At first, there were only whispers. A couple, walking arm in arm, clearly drunk, doing a double-take when walking past us, then saying they must have gotten the wrong people. That there was no way weâd be back here already. A car slowing down next to us, and the driver not so discreetly staring at us after lowering his window, causing us to hurriedly turn our faces away from him. But those were manageable. After all, they didnât actually stop us or talk to us.
âHooooly shit!â A trainer yelled. He had a Starly comfortably sitting on his head, and the dim, warm street lights shone on his face. âIs thatâ that is you! Three of the four first-year prodigies! Ricky, wake up!â
The trainerâ who was clearly a first year like usâ lifted a hand and tapped his Starlyâs side, and the bird lazily opened a single eye before going back to sleep, evidently uninterested in us.
âCan I get a picture with all of you?â He asked, his voice trembling with excitement. He turned toward me with a look of childlike wonder. âThe way you took down that Darmanitan was awesome. Iâve rewatched your battle at least a hundred times!â
âSâsure,â I nodded after taking a deep breath. This was just one trainer, so I was relatively fine, but the fact that I had fans was mindboggling to me. âThat should be fine, right?â I asked, turning to the others.
âYeah, absolutely,â Denzel smiled.
âWait! Thereâs a risk that the others will see it, and itâll ruin the surprise,â Cece said.
âRight! Please donât upload it anywhere until tomorrow,â Denzel said.
âI wonât, I promise!â The trainer smiled.
He was my age, but something about him was so⦠innocent in a way I couldnât explain. It made him feel younger than I was, somehow. He grabbed his phone, and we smiled for his selfie before going on our way. People were talking loudly about us now, and we had to stop a few more times to take group pictures.
âLetâs not do any more stops,â Cece sighed. âWeâre only ten minutes away from the Center, and itâd be a miracle if no oneâs posted about us online or on the forums already, despite us asking not to.â
âThey should be partying, I doubt that theyâll be browsing the internet,â I said. My throat felt dry, and I was sweating buckets now that actual large groups were coming up to us. I really hated this. I could understand why Craigâs sister kept a low profile perfectly now, but that path was already barred. Once I took one step toward fameâ even though it was against my willâ there was no way to turn back.
âCanât be a party without me,â Denzel chuckled, waving toward a group of teen girls that squealed at him. It was like a scene out of a shitty romance movie.
âYou sure are taking well to your new situation,â Cece remarked.
âWell, this is the kind of stuff Iâve been dreaming about for years, so I might let it get to my head a little,â he shrugged.
âI just want to get in a room alreadyâ¦â I grumbled.
âYouâre doing well, donât worry,â Cece smiled.
Denzel perked up. âThatâs right! You could be throwing up, or crying, or freezing upââ
âNot. Helping,â I interrupted. I took a relieved breath when I saw that the Center was finally in view, the warm glow of the building offering me much-needed comfort. My steps grew larger and faster.
Obviously, that had been foolish of me, because when we entered the Center, we were swarmed by a horde of trainers and reporters who had seemingly gotten wind that we were here and guessed that we were going where our friends had been staying.
âPlease, a momentââ
âHow did you all get here so fastââ
âCan I get a picture? My friends will never believe meââ
âDo we have time for a quick interviewââ
The bright lights of the camera flashes, the loud voices speaking over each other and the squeeze of pushing through a sea of people all made me clam up, but Cece and Denzel helped me through.
âPlease, let them through!â Nurse Joy yelled. The place was so full that we couldnât even get past the lobby. She released a Chansey, who stared daggers at us. âLet them through, or Iâll have Chansey evacuate the premises!â She yelled furiously.
It was as if hell had frozen over. The room was completely silent, and everyone turned toward Nurse Joy. Nurse Joys were one of the most accommodating, nice group of people on the planet, and they had to be. It was one of the most difficult jobs in existence. Long shifts, having to give up your identity for hours at a time, taking care of abrasive young trainers and their Pokemon, seeing children
and Pokemon die⦠the list could go on and on. So the fact that a Nurse Joy had just angrily screamed was not lost on everyone, and we were finally let through.
âArceus, that was awful,â I sighed as we stepped into the elevator, thankfully alone.
âYeah, people can get a bit pushy,â Denzel awkwardly said. âBut hey, turn that frown upside down. Weâre meeting everyone after so long!â
âRight,â I smiled.
We reached Paulineâs room and put an ear to the door.
âShit, theyâre not celebrating at hers. Maybe Louisâ?â Denzel said.
âThatâd make sense, he always hosts the parties,â Cecilia excitedly nodded.
We moved on to Louisâ room, practically breaking into a run. I placed my ear on the door and heard muffled voices and music.
âWho wants to do the honors?â I whispered.
âCece should,â Denzel said, nodding toward the door.
Her hand hovered over the door for a few seconds, and then she finally knocked. I could almost hear Pauline complaining through the door, and Justin trying to hold her back through the door. We all stood up straight, waiting for her to open it.
Pauline burst through the door. âNot during my birthday, you assâ Whâ what?â
Pokemon Center rooms were small, so everyone got a good look at us right away, and they were speechless. They werenât even moving.
âSurprise?â Denzel hesitantly said. âHappy birthâ woah!â
Pauline rammed against him and grabbed all of us, bringing us into a tight hug. Finally out of their stupor, the others ran toward us and did the same. I was being held so tightly I struggled to breathe, and I felt tears stream down my face. We were back. We were finally back, after so long.
âHow did youâ how did you even get here this fast?â Justin stammered. âThereâs no way you could walkââ
âWe flew on Craig Goodwillâs Salamence,â Cece explained.
Emiliaâs eyes bulged. âCraig Goodwillâs Salamence? You know him?â
âWeâre on pretty good terms,â Denzel boasted. âTook us three days to get there, just in time for your birthday, Pauline.â
âHappy birthday!â Cece and I both said.
âYou guys are so stupid!â She cried. âYou could have warned us!â
âWell, itâs not a surprise if we do that,â Denzel chuckled. âWe donât exactly have a gift for youââ
âWeâre the gift,â I said.
âI was getting there! You joke thief.â
We closed the door, and they welcomed us in. The room felt packed with so many people, but that was perfectly fine. We took off our coats and bags before sitting on Louisâ bed, and he handed us some drinks.
âI still canât believe it,â he said with a dumbfounded smile. âWe have so much to catch up on.â
âAnd a lot to plan,â I added. âSorry, I just feel like zipping away from the city as fast as I can, if possible?â
âStill as bad with fame as you were, huh?â Pauline teased. âWe can talk about leaving tomorrow.â
âDonât act all tough, you were crying like a baby five minutes ago,â I retorted.
âSo were you! Anyway, um, we didnât really plan enough food for three extra people, but feel free to take anything you want. You must be hungry after traveling.â
Different kinds of chips were laid out on Louisâ desk, along with a half-eaten strawberry cake.
âIâm surprised youâre this down to earth on birthday food,â Denzel said. âThis feels so normal, I was kind of expecting a giant, layered cake.â
âRight? Like a wedding cake!â I laughed.
âPaulineâs always been cheap with food,â Emilia sighed. âShe insisted on eating these unhealthy snacks.â
âA girl after my own heart,â I said proudly as I stood up to grab some food.
âYouâre taking a whole lotâ¦â Justin remarked.
âIâm a growing girl,â I said as I stuffed my mouth with chips. âI havenât eaten these in ages.â
âPlease donât speak while youâre chewing,â he chuckled. âLouis, do we have anything else in your fridge?â
âSome leftovers from yesterdayâs cafeteria food that I took with meââ
âNevermind.â
âCome on, Cafeteria food isnât bad,â Denzel said.
âOr at least not bad enough to elicit such a reaction from Justin,â Cece added.
âThey make some awesome hashbrowns up in Snowpoint. You guys were missing out,â I shrugged.
We somehow ended up having an unhinged debate about how Pokemon Center food was either disgusting or at least passable. Unsurprisingly, Denzel and I were on the passable camp, although if there was one, Iâd be on the âgoodâ team.
âPauline⦠you traitor,â Denzel said.
âIâm sorry, that purée is really bad,â She said, crossing her arms.
âDonât call it purée, you snob,â he rolled his eyes. âItâs mashed potatoes, and it doesnât taste nearly as bad as you make it out to be.â
Emilia lifted a hand. âActually, purée is different than mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes have a rougher texture, and purée is smoothââ
I placed my head in my hands. âPlease, letâs not discuss the definition of different potato dishes.â
âBut sheâs correctââ
âJustin⦠think of those poor cooks coming in every day to make food for you ingrates,â Denzel sighed, clearly sarcastically.
âOkay, enough about food!â Louis groaned. âThe fact of the matter is, they prioritize quantity over quality, which makes sense. Letâs just please talk about something else.â
âLike that Larvitar you caught, Grace,â Pauline said in an accusing tone.
âRight, you did catch one. I assume you got it in Mount Coronet?â Louis asked.
âHer,â I corrected him. âAnd I did, but sheâs still just a baby.â
âIâm so jealous,â Pauline said. âA Tyranitar would fit me so perfectlyâ¦â
âCome to think of it, it would,â Cece said. âTheyâre famously angry and vicious all the time.â
âDonât be so smug,â Pauline responded. âAnyway, Iâm surprised you didnât tell us you caught her.â
âMore like disappointed,â Emilia said.
âIâm sorry, it must have slipped my mind,â I apologized. âHonestly, I was kind of hyper focused on getting ready for my battle, and then the fact that I owned a Larvitar got leaked anyway, thanks to this guy,â I said, hitting Denzelâs shoulder.
âOw! What the hell?! When we were in Snowpoint, you said it was both of our faults, and now youâre blaming me?!â
âCome on, take a joke,â I laughed. âIâm going to start training her when we get back on the road, but right now, sheâs not a battler.â
âPauline, why donât you tell them what you found as the next member of your team?â Justin asked.
The girl hummed. âFine. Itâs a Rufflet.â
âHoly shit, it does fit you!â Denzel grinned. âA Braviary? Thatâs perfect.â
âI have standards,â she huffed. âWhy do you think I waited so long to catch a third?â
âIf you keep up those standards, youâll end up with three Pokemon by the end of the year,â Cece joked.
âDamn, youâre a lot more playful these days,â Pauline smiled. âYouâve changed a lot.â
âAgreed,â Justin said. âItâs like youâre happierâ I suppose the fact that your fatherâs been having a terrible few weeks adds to that.â
Cece shot me a quick look but then nodded. We were going to have to do the big reveal, probably tomorrow. âIâve heard that heâs been desperately trying to contact me, but Iâll let Clarence stew in his own mess,â she said. âI had plenty of money in my account, so I wonât have to change my lifestyle that much.â
Louis gave her a tight nod. âThe rest of our parents havenât cut off the moneyâ probably because they know itâd reflect badly on them. My fatherâs already under fire for raising prices.â
âHeâs still negotiating with the Directorate for a bailout. Heâs been having to sell more and more shares,â Emilia explained.
âRight, and I heard that heâs also been asking for lower interest rates,â Cece said. âClarence has been doing the same thing with Unovaâs government. It doesnât matter. Even though I wish the company would fail, I always knew it was an unrealistic expectation, and I know I havenât seen the last of him. All I care about now is being free, getting strong enough to keep that freedom, and fulfilling my promise at the end of the year.â
Justin raised an eyebrow. âYouâve been talking about this promise for a while,â he started. âCould you tell us what it is?â
âRight,â Louis nodded. âIn Floaroma, Eterna forest, during your gym battle in Snowpoint, and now here?â
âI suppose I will. It was after the⦠events at Valley Windworks,â Cecilia said, looking at me. She then turned to the others. âDo you remember when Cynthia came to my hospital room?â
âRight, she did,â Emilia said.
âShe talked to me about a lot of things that opened up my path to freedom, but she also challenged me.â
I almost choked on my chips. âChallenged you?â
âShe asked me to win the Conference, beat the Elite Four, and meet her in battle,â she firmly said. âI remember her words like it was yesterday,â she said with a glimmer in her eyes. âI personally challenge you. Donât disappoint me. Thatâs what she told me, word for word.â
âArceusâ¦â Denzel muttered.
So Cynthia had also seen Cece that day and challenged her? That was probably why Cece was still as driven as before she had finally been freed from her father. Cynthiaâs challenge was the goal that kept her going.
âSo there you have it,â Cece said. Then suddenly, her eyes burned, and she looked at me. âThatâs why Iâm going to win this year.â
âWeâll see about that,â I said, smiling at her. âBut hey, no matter what happens, no hard feelings, right?â
She agreed immediately. âNo hard feelings.â
âIâm feeling left out,â Denzel complained.
I playfully slapped his back. âOh shut up, you big baby. Youâre obviously included in the no hard feelings pact. Everyone is.â
Suddenly, there was only silence, but thankfully, Emilia came to the rescue.
âGuys, thinking about it, we never told you what we all got for Pauline,â she smiled.
âThe worst gifts of all time,â the redhead said. âExcept Emiâs, of course.â
âIâm not getting you anything next year,â Louis said. âYou complain too much.â
âI mean, come on, Louis, Jewelry is so basic! Try a little bit harder. I know you just gave me that bracelet because you didnât know what else to buy.â
He awkwardly scratched his cheek.
âSee? And Justin, a book about starting my own business? Are you sure you donât want it back, because that seems like something youâd enjoy much more than me.â
âIâve already read it multiple times, and I think it can benefit anyone, which is why I wanted to give it to youââ
âYuck. At least Emi got me something good.â
âWhatâd she get ya?â Denzel asked.
âMoney and a birthday card with a nice message on it.â
âMâmoney?â Denzel stammered. âDonât you have that already? In ridiculous quantities?â
âYeah, but if someone gives me money, I can buy myself whatever I want, and itâs not my money, so it still feels like a gift,â she shrugged, before hugging Emilia. âThank you, Emi, youâre the best.â
âIf Iâm the best, will you do something for me?â
âAnything.â
âWill you be nicer the next time someone gets you a gift?â
âOkay, youâre asking for a lot here.â
We partied deep into the night, but eventually, it was time to go to sleep. I bid everyone goodnight before leaving. Emilia was barely awake, dozing off on Louisâ bed. Justin and Louis were talking with Cece about something business-related that I was nowhere near smart enough to understand. Pauline and Denzel, meanwhile, were leaning against the open window and had somehow launched into a conversation about if chess was a game, and I quote, for âsmug smart assesâ or not. I shot Cece a look, signaling to her that I was going to be the first to leave, and she stood up.
âIâll bring Grace downstairs so that we can book a room,â she said. âDonât forget to book a room, Denzel!â
He turned our way. âYeah, worst-case scenario, Iâll just go crash at Justinâs.â
âOld habits die hard,â Pauline smiled.
We left, and when we entered the elevator, Cece gripped my hand.
âArceus, it hurts to pretend just to be friends,â she sighed.
âIt does,â I agreed. âBut was it that different?â
âObviously. With the trip with Craig, I havenât kissed you in too long.â
âWell, one quick elevator kiss wouldnât hurt, or maybe you can come back to my roomââ
âNo, itâs too risky,â she sighed. âWhat if someone sees me get in or come out? No. Weâll tell everyone tomorrow, right after we make plans to leave Eterna.â
âI think youâre being too anxious about it. It could just be a friendly sleepover. Plus, Louis will be fine with us.â
âI donât know, Grace,â she said. âI like him, and heâs a friend, but I can see it in his eyes. He still isnât over me.â
âBut heâs given up on you.â
âRight, but that doesnât mean he doesnât love me anymore,â Cece said. âLove can make someone do foolish things. He might have been okay with me finally coming clean about not loving him back, but if he knows Iâm dating someone else? He mightââ
The doors opened, and we immediately stopped talking. Thankfully, this late at night, people were no longer waiting for us, but we didnât want to accidentally leak something. Not when we were so close from telling the truth. It wasnât like we were doing anything bad, of course. We werenât under that impression at all, but feelings were a fickle thing. It was best to be gentle about this. We booked two different rooms and bid each other goodnight.
Even though I felt anxious, tomorrow could not come soon enough.
