Standing atop a hill, the Guardian and the girl gazed down at the city sprawled below.
It was a world governed by rules and recordâsterile, symmetrical, utterly controlled.
Towers stood in perfect rows. Glowing lines of script floated in the sky. A pale order blanketed every surface.
> âThe center of it allâ¦â
> The heart of the Record.
Fragments of memory flickered in the Guardianâs mindâhis past self, once a part of this place.
But what stirred in him now wasnât nostalgia.
It was weight.
This city was everything freedom was not.
> âWe need to prepare before entering,â
the girl said, opening her blank book.
A soft light shimmered from the pages, and their outlines began to blur.
> âConcealment magic?â
>
> âYes. But not perfect.
> Theyâll notice soon enough.â
Quietly, they stepped beyond the cityâs outer boundary.
In this domain, everything was documented, every entity tracked and indexed.
As beings outside the Record, their very presence exuded anomaly.
People passed them in the streetsâ
Or rather, Recorders.
Most were semi-autonomous agents, carrying out tasks with blank faces and mechanical precision.
> âWhere are we headed?â
asked the Guardian.
> âThe Record Spire,â
>
>
> Stolen story; please report.
she answered without turning.
> âThe core of this city. The engine of all its laws.â
The Guardian nodded, but unease coiled inside him.
He understood: the entire city moved with a single purposeâ
to erase them.
When they reached the central plaza, the atmosphere shifted.
The Recorders around them froze, turning in eerie unison.
Expressionless eyes locked onto them.
> â...Weâve been found.â
The moment the girl whispered those words, sirens wailed across the city.
Walls of light surged upward on all sides, sealing off every exit.
> âUnwritten entities detected.
> Initiating Erasure Protocol.â
Descending from above came a different kind of enemyâ
High-Rank Recorders.
Designed not just to maintain structure, but to eliminate anything that violated it.
> âGuardian, weâll have to break through!â
She raised the book high.
Unwritten magic burst forthâ
But the High-Rank Recorders countered instantly, nullifying the spell.
> âIt didnât workâ¦?â
The Guardian stepped in front of her, forming a radiant shield.
The assault began at once. Blades of light crashed against the barrier, sparks flying.
These were not enemies they could overwhelm.
They were part of the law itself.
> âEven the power of the unwritten⦠isnât absolute.â
Calmly, the Guardian analyzed the flow of combat.
Defense alone would not suffice.
> âIâll open a path.
> When I doâstrike.â
The girl nodded.
Together, they breathed in silence.
Thenâ
In a flash, they moved.
The Guardian drew enemy attention, buying seconds.
The girl gathered magic once more.
The timing was perfect.
> âNow!â
Her spell shattered part of the light barrier.
Just enough.
They dashed through the breach, disappearing into a narrow alley.
Catching his breath, the Guardian turned to her.
> âWhat now?â
She stared down at her book, voice soft.
> âIf we reach the Spire, weâll find the âKey.â
> But there are still walls weâll have to break through.â
The Guardian gave a single nod.
They pressed forward once more,
moving deeper into the shadows of the Record Cityâ
toward the battle yet to come.
