The moment the Guardian stepped outside the Tower, he was greeted by a world unlike anything he had ever known.
The sky stretched endlessly above.
The wind drifted freely, bound by no rules.
To him, this was what it meant to enter the Unwritten Worldâ
a domain unguaranteed by record, a space outside all certainties.
> âSo this is what lies beyond the Recordâ¦â
he murmured, scanning the unfamiliar landscape.
But every object his eyes metâsoil, trees, even the air itselfâtriggered error codes in his mind.
Nothing aligned with the system he once upheld.
Beside him, the girl closed her eyes and smiled into the breeze.
> âFeels nice, doesnât it?â
He hesitated, but nodded.
Even the act of feeling was foreign to him.
And yetâit felt⦠good.
After some time walking, the girl came to a stop.
Far in the distance, a massive city shimmered like a mirage.
Towers stood in perfect order. Streams of light formed lines of code across the skyline.
> âThatâs the City of Records.â
It was the seat of power for the laws of order.
A place the Guardian once called home.
But now, it no longer felt like home.
> âTheyâll come for us,â
>
>
> Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.
the girl said softly.
By leaving the Tower, they had become enemies of the system.
Just then, a pulse surged through the Guardianâs perception field.
Multiple magical signaturesâclosing in fast.
Pursuers.
Recorders, dispatched to erase them.
> âTheyâre here.â
The girl opened her bookâthe blank one.
Her fingers slid across the empty pages, and a faint light shimmered into being.
The Guardian instinctively shifted into a defensive stance.
But even as he moved, a question tugged at him:
> âWhy am I doing thisâ¦?â
The girl caught his gaze, smiling gently.
> âBecause youâre not just a Guardian anymore.
> Thatâs why you want to protect.â
The Recorders emerged in silence, their weapons trained.
There would be no mercy.
The girlâs incantation rode the wind.
Reality bent.
Her unwritten magic immobilized the Recordersâ
But they adapted.
Unlike the agents before, these were equipped to counter powers outside the Record.
> âThisâll be a problem if we drag it outâ¦â
she muttered, frustration flickering across her face.
Beside her, the Guardian felt itâ
His combat protocols activating on their own.
But this time, something was different.
This wasnât just about defense.
> âIs it enough⦠just to protect?â
For the first time, he searched for his own reason to fight.
That thought alone shifted something within him.
He stepped forward.
A blade of light formed in his hand.
He struck with precision, freezing one enemy in place.
The girl seized the moment and wiped out the rest.
Silence returned.
> âNot bad,â
she teased with a grin.
The Guardian stared at his hands.
No command had guided his actions.
What he feltâit was close to something like will.
> âWe need to move.
> Before we reach the city, thereâs much to prepare.â
She turned, walking again.
The Guardian followed, a new question rising in his heart:
> Why do I fight?
He had no answer yet.
But as they pressed on toward the City of Records,
he knew the path would lead him closer to it.
