Flora left the sanctuary of the Forest Keepers with a heavy heart and a multitude of questions. An alliance had been forged, but its price was highâthree mysterious and, without a doubt, deadly trials. She had gotten what she wanted: she was not treated as a supplicant, but recognized as an equal. But now she had to prove that she was worthy of this status.
Naeri escorted her back to the rocky cape where they had met. "The choice has been made, Flora Disleyvane," she said at parting. "There is no turning back now. The Forest will watch over you. And help, if you prove worthy."
Aboard the Sea Wanderer, Flora was met with impatient curiosity. Son and Brenn immediately dragged her into her cabin, demanding a report.
"Well, Captain? Did they agree? When do we get access to their treasures?" Son asked impatiently.
"They agreed to an alliance," Flora replied, sinking onto a chair. She felt completely drained. "We will fight together. And the reward... the reward will come after the victory."
She decided not to tell them the whole truth about the trials just yet. They wouldn't understand. To them, it would be just more fairy tales, another delay. She needed to give them what they wantedâan enemy and a plan.
"Good," Son nodded, satisfied with her answer. "When do we start? My boys have been idle for too long."
"First, reconnaissance and preparation," Flora said. "The Wardens will share their knowledge of the island with us, about the cultists' weaknesses. We must act with certainty."
She laid out a plan for them, one they had sketched out with the Elders: to join forces, strike at the main cultist camps, eliminate their leaders, and drive the remnants deep into the jungle. It sounded like a comprehensible military campaign, and Son and Brenn accepted it without objection.
But when they left, and Flora was alone, the full weight of her decision fell upon her. She had deceived her crew, promising them gold while she was about to risk her life in mystical trials. She had forged an alliance with a people she knew almost nothing about, for a cause her own men did not share. She felt alone, caught between her duty to her ancestors and her obligations to those who had followed her.

In the following days, the joint work began. Small groups of Wardens started appearing on the Sea Wanderer, bringing maps, samples of plants and animals, and sharing information. The sailors, in turn, demonstrated their weaponsâcrossbows and steel swords, which were far more effective than spears with stone tips. The initial distrust gradually gave way to business-like cooperation.
Flora spent a great deal of time with Naeri and Caelan, studying the island and its secrets. They told her about the Great Darknessânot as a deity, but as an ancient, parasitic entity that had awakened after the Great Fracture and was now feeding on the life force of the Island, poisoning it and driving its inhabitants mad.
"The cultists are not just savages," Caelan explained. "They are our former brothers. A tribe that succumbed to the whisper of the Darkness, to its promises of power. It has twisted their bodies and souls. And now they are its slaves."
This knowledge further strengthened Flora's resolve. This was not just a war for territory; it was a struggle for healing, for the salvation of souls.
One day, Naeri took Flora to the Tree of Memory in the center of the sanctuary.
"Your second trial is near," she said. "You must enter the Womb of Darknessâthe cave where its influence is strongestâand find its Heart. Not to destroy it, but to cleanse it. To return to the Island what the Darkness has stolen from it."
"But how will I find it?" Flora wondered. "I do not know this island."
"Your blood will help you," Naeri replied. "The blood of the Memory Keepers. It remembers the way. Listen to your inner voice. Follow the signs. And do not trust your eyes. On this island, nothing is as it seems."
She gave Flora a small amulet made of silvery wood. "This will help protect your mind from the whisper of the Darkness. But the main protection is within you."
The next day, telling her crew that she was going on a solo reconnaissance deep into the island, Flora left the Sea Wanderer. She took with her only the bare essentials: "Whisper," some food, a flask of water, and the Keepers' amulet.
She knew she was possibly heading to her certain death. But this was her path. The price of her choice.
The Trial of Choice was over. The Trial of Shadow was beginning. And Flora Disleyvane was ready to walk this path, no matter how dangerous it might be.
