Chapter 5: The Path of Shadows and the Voice of Ancestors

Dawn on the island was deceptively peaceful. The sun lazily crept out from behind the jagged mountain peaks, painting the sky in soft pink and peach tones. A light mist that had been curling over the jungle slowly dissipated. Birds sang at the top of their lungs, their trills mingling with the steady murmur of the surf. It seemed as if the night's fears and anxieties had been just a bad dream.

But Flora was not fooled by this idyll. She had spent an almost sleepless night, pondering what had happened. The mysterious archers. The rescued captive who spoke the Common tongue. And the altar on the ruins of her ancestors. The answers to these questions could be the key to survival on this island.

After a meagre breakfast—the last of the salt beef and hardtack—Flora gathered the crew on deck. "Today we go ashore for water again," she announced. "Two longboats. The first—with the water barrels and a covering party. Raylen, you're in command. With you are Masefeg, Son, and ten more fighters, including our best crossbowmen. The mission is to quickly gather water from the stream and return to the ship. No unnecessary movements. At the slightest sign of danger—retreat."

Raylen, a grim sailor from the Shattered Coast, nodded silently. "Understood, Captain. We'll be on alert."

"The second longboat will be me, Brenn, and two of the stealthiest and most enduring men," Flora continued. "We'll land a little way from the main group. Our mission is reconnaissance. I want to try and track these... archers. Find out where their lair is, what their strength is. And, if we're lucky, understand their intentions."

At these words, a murmur ran through the ranks of the sailors. The plan was risky.

"Captain, this is madness!" exclaimed Turville, the old helmsman. "You'll be walking straight into the jaws of an unknown enemy! Let me go with you. I may be old, but I can still stand for myself and for you."

Flora smiled gently. "Thank you, Turville. I appreciate your loyalty. But I need the young and fast. And you are more needed here, on the Sea Wanderer. If something happens, your experience will be priceless." She scanned the rest of the crew. "I know it's dangerous. But sitting on our hands and waiting to be picked off one by one is even more dangerous. We must find out what this island hides, and why Corvus is so afraid of anyone finding their way here."

At the mention of Corvus's name, Brenn's face darkened. He remembered all too well how the legions of the Conclave of Silverstone, under the pretext of "restoring order," had disarmed the city guard of his hometown, leaving him and his men without work or honour. It was a humiliation he had not forgotten. "We must act. And we must be ready for anything."

Her voice sounded confident, and this confidence was transmitted to the crew. The doubts subsided. The sailors began to prepare the longboats and weapons.

An hour later, two longboats pushed off from the Sea Wanderer. The first, under Raylen's command, headed straight for the spot on the beach where they had found the stream. The second, with Flora, Brenn, and two nimble sailors, turned towards the northern end of the bay, where the cliffs met the water.

After landing, Flora and her small detachment began a cautious advance into the jungle, following the faint tracks left by the rescued captive. Flora, thanks to her innate Keeper's intuition, followed the trail with a certainty that surprised even the experienced Brenn.

After several hours of exhausting travel, as the crescent moon began to sink towards the west, Flora reached the base of a high cliff. Here, among a jumble of rocks, she saw what she was looking for. A narrow, almost invisible crevice in the rock, camouflaged by hanging vines. From it came a barely audible sound—either the murmur of an underground stream or... muffled voices. Flora held her breath. She had found them.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

She carefully parted the vines and peered into the crevice. It was dark inside, but further in, a faint glow of fire was visible. And voices could be heard. They spoke a language that was vaguely familiar to her—not the Common tongue of the Union, but not the guttural dialect of the cultists either. It was an ancient, almost forgotten dialect of the Silvershine Empire.

Flora hesitated. To go inside? It would be madness. But curiosity and a thirst for knowledge overpowered fear. She had to know more. She drew "Whisper" and stepped into the darkness.

The passage led her into a small cave. Three people sat by a fire. Two men and one woman. They were dressed in tight-fitting clothes of dark, matte leather. They had bows and quivers of arrows made of dark wood with obsidian tips. Among them was the young man she had rescued.

Suddenly, one of the men looked up and stared directly at where Flora was hiding. His eyes, glinting in the semi-darkness, were sharp and attentive. "Who's there?" he said in the ancient dialect.

Flora froze. She had been discovered.

"Come out," the man repeated, but this time in the Common tongue of the Union, albeit with a slight accent. "We know you're here. We've been waiting for you."

Flora slowly stepped out from behind the ledge, holding "Whisper" in front of her. The woman threw back her hood. She had long, dark hair and piercing green eyes. Her face was beautiful, but stern. "Who are you?" she asked. "And what are you doing on our island?"

"My name is Flora," she replied. "I came from the ship in the bay. We are explorers."

"Explorers?" the man with the scar on his cheek sneered. "Or just another band of robbers, like those who worship the Darkness?"

"We are not robbers," Flora said firmly. "We are looking for... our home."

"You saved this man's life," the woman said, nodding towards the rescued youth, who stood apart. "For that, we are grateful. But that doesn't answer the question of who you are. And why your blade bears the symbols of the Ancient Empire?" She had noticed the engraving on the hilt of "Whisper."

At that moment, Caelan, who had been silently observing Flora, stepped forward. "The Raven..." he whispered, looking at the small brooch on her jacket, the sigil of her house. "The sigil of the Disleyvanes. The Memory Keepers."

The woman and the other man looked at him in astonishment, and then at Flora. "You are... the last one?" the woman asked, her voice trembling.

Flora nodded.

"The prophecy..." the man with the scar breathed out. "It's coming true."

"What prophecy?" Flora asked.

"The prophecy says that when the Darkness, born of the Great Fracture, raises its head again, the last of the Memory Keepers will return to the First Shore, to bring either salvation or final ruin," the woman replied. "Our ancestors stayed here to serve this land. And this island is the First Shore you are looking for."

Flora stood frozen. She had found it. She had found it.

"Now you know who we are, Flora Disleyvane," the woman continued. "And now you must decide. You came here alone. That was foolish. Or very brave. But you are here. And now you must make a choice. Are you with us in the war against the Darkness? Or are you and your people just another threat that needs to be eliminated?"

"I... I don't know," Flora answered honestly. "My people... they are different. They seek gold, not the fulfilment of prophecies."

"Then convince them," said the man with the scar. "Or get off our island. Forget about it like a bad dream. That would be the best choice for all of you."

"And if we don't leave and don't join you?" Flora asked.

"Then you will become our enemies," the woman replied coldly. "There is no third option. The Forest does not tolerate uncertainty." She pointed to the cave entrance. "Go. Think. But not for long. We don't have much time. The Darkness will not wait."

Flora looked at them. The Forest Keepers. Descendants of her people. She had found what she was looking for. But with it, she had found a war she had not asked for. She nodded. "I will think."

And without another word, she turned and left the cave, leaving behind the three Keepers and their difficult choice. The path of shadows had led her to an unexpected discovery. And the voice of her ancestors seemed to whisper to her of ancient secrets and coming battles.
