Chapter 13: The Ashes of Old Wounds and Plans for the Coming Battle

The destruction of the cultist village was an important victory, but it did not bring final peace. The smoke from the burning huts hung over the jungle for a long time, like a bitter reminder of the battle's ferocity.

Returning to the Sea Wanderer, their first priority was the wounded. The Keeper healers, skilled in the art of herbal medicine, worked tirelessly. Flora personally assisted them, her hands, which had so recently gripped "Whisper," now carefully cleaning wounds and applying bandages. This shared battle, shared victory, and shared loss forged an even stronger bond between them.

Once the wounded were cared for, Flora, her officers, and the Keeper Elders gathered in the captain's cabin.

"We have dealt them a serious blow," Caelan began. "But the Darkness is not broken. It has retreated to the depths, into that same Womb. And it will be preparing a counter-strike."

"The Darkness, yes," Brenn interjected, who had been silently cleaning his sword. "But I'm not thinking about it. I'm thinking about the one holding the leash. About Corvus. He lost this round, but he will not back down. Remember their motto: 'We do not swerve.' Now that he knows we are here, he will come. Not with cultists. But with the entire fleet of the Conclave."

"We must be ready for that," Flora nodded. "But how do we fight something that has no physical body? Something that can seep into our minds?"

"Its most dangerous weapon is lies. Illusions. Temptations," replied Elder Lianna. "It will try to break your spirit, to sow discord among us. Our main defense is unity and knowledge. The ancient knowledge that we, the Keepers, have guarded for centuries."

In the days that followed, the Forest Keepers began to share their secrets with Flora and her crew. They told them about the magical properties of the Island, of its connection to the River of Time. Of the ancient rituals that could strengthen the spirit. Of herbs and crystals that possessed protective power.

The sailors of the Sea Wanderer learned the art of survival in the jungle from the Keepers. They learned to shoot the Keepers' bows, whose obsidian arrows were particularly effective against the spawn of Darkness. Flora spent a great deal of time with Naeri and Caelan, studying forest combat tactics. She also learned to meditate like the Keepers, to establish a connection with the Forest, to draw strength from it. It was not easy, but she was beginning to succeed.

One day, Naeri took Flora to a secret library in the Keepers' sanctuary, carved into the rock. The shelves were filled with scrolls and clay tablets.

"Here lies the wisdom of ages, Flora Disleyvane," Naeri said. "The knowledge of our ancestors who remained here after the Great Fracture. And the prophecies of what is to come."

She took one of the scrolls from a shelf. On it were symbols depicting a battle between a warrior of Light and an embodiment of Darkness.

"The Prophecy of the Last Battle," Naeri said. "It says that when the Great Darkness reaches the peak of its power, the last Memory Keeper will appear. And this Keeper, uniting the forces of all who have not yet succumbed to the Darkness, will give it the final battle."

"But how... how do we defeat it?" Flora asked.

"The prophecy speaks of three components of victory," Naeri answered, pointing to the symbols. "The Shield of Truth, which reflects any lie. It will allow us to read the ancient maps and find the hidden vaults. The Spear of Light, forged from the ray of a morning star. Its power can not only strike down the Darkness but also awaken the ancient mechanisms of our ancestors. And the Heart of the Warrior—not a physical heart, but a spirit that must be pure, brave, and devoted to the end."

"The Spear of Light... The Shield of Truth..." Flora repeated. "Where can they be found?"

"They are hidden on this Island," Naeri said. "Protected by ancient magic and guardians. To find them will be your next trial, Flora. If you can acquire these artifacts, we will have a chance."

"And the Heart of the Warrior?" she asked.

Naeri looked at her with her piercing green eyes. "That is something you already possess. Your unbending will. Your readiness to sacrifice everything for a cause. You must preserve it within you. That is the most important thing."

In the following days, Flora, along with Naeri, Caelan, and a few of the best warriors, began to prepare for the search for the artifacts. It would be dangerous and difficult. Her crew from the Sea Wanderer did not sit idle either. Under the leadership of Brenn and Son, they fortified the bay's defenses, turning it into an impregnable bastion.

The relationship between the sailors and the Keepers gradually improved. The initial mistrust gave way to respect and even friendship. On the training ground, Masefeg would bring his war hammer crashing down on a shield held by one of Brenn's warriors, teaching the elves to meet brute force. "You're too light!" he would roar good-naturedly at Caelan, who barely stood his ground after parrying a blow. "You float like butterflies, but steel is no butterfly! It must be broken!" In response, Caelan would take his bow and teach the giant to listen to the wind, showing how a subtle change in the rustle of leaves could reveal a hidden enemy fifty paces away. Thus, in the clash of steel and the whisper of arrows, they found more than just tactical advantages—they found a common language.

One evening, upon returning from another foray, Flora came upon an unusual scene on the deck of the Sea Wanderer. Her sailors and several Keepers were sitting around a fire. Thrift was playing a simple flute, and Masefeg, usually so stern, was trying to sing along in his deep bass. The others were laughing and clapping.

Even Naeri, usually so reserved, was sitting by the fire, watching the merriment with a faint smile. Flora approached and sat beside her.

"It seems our people have found a common tongue," she said.

"Yes," Naeri nodded. "Music and laughter are what unite everyone. This, too, is part of the strength that opposes the Darkness."

She looked at Flora. "You are tired. But you do not give up. You truly have the Heart of a Warrior."

Flora smiled. "I am just doing what I must. As are we all."

She looked at her friends, her new allies. They were so different, yet united by a common goal. And she, Flora Disleyvane, was their leader. And she would not fail them.

The ashes of the old wounds she carried in her soul were gradually scattering, giving way to a new fire—the fire of determination, the fire of hope, the fire of the coming battle.

The plans were made. The alliance was strong. All that was left... was to win.
