Chapter 9: The Labyrinths of the Ancient Forest and the Whisper of Forgotten Gods

Her farewell to the crew was brief. Brenn and Son saw her to the longboat, their faces grim.

“Be careful, Captain,” Brenn said. “These jungles do not forgive mistakes.”

“And try to find something shiny!” Son added, trying to lighten the mood.

Flora merely nodded, unable to speak. She felt like a fraud.

Landing on the shore, she froze for a moment, staring into the green wall of the jungle. Where to go? What signs was she to look for? Naeri had given her no clues, only vague hints about the “voice of her blood.”

Flora closed her eyes. She tried to clear her mind. She focused on the silence, on the breath of the forest. And she began to listen.

At first, she heard only the usual sounds: the singing of birds, the rustle of leaves. But then, gradually, other sounds began to break through this chorus. The barely perceptible whisper of the wind, the murmur of underground streams… and a low, vibrating hum. It came from the north, from the depths of the island.

The Heart of the Island… her inner memory whispered. It is beating.

She opened her eyes. The decision was made. She would go north. Towards the sound.

The path was difficult. The forest in this part of the island was different. Older, wilder. Giant trees stood so densely that their canopies let in almost no sunlight. The air was heavy, humid, and smelled of mould and something unsettling.

Flora moved slowly, cautiously, listening to the hum, which seemed to grow louder. She walked for several hours, feeling no fatigue. She was driven not by physical strength, but by some inner resolve, the memory of her lineage.

Finally, she came to a small clearing, bathed in a dim light. In the center of the clearing stood an ancient, ruined altar of black stone, covered in moss and Imperial symbols. And before the altar, on a high stone throne, sat a figure.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

It was an old woman. As ancient as the forest itself. Her face was cut with deep wrinkles. She was dressed in rough rags. And in her hands, she held a bone flute, from which a quiet, sad melody flowed.

When Flora approached, the old woman stopped playing. She raised her eyes to Flora. They were surprisingly young, clear, and piercing.

“You have come, Child of Memory,” the old woman said. Her voice was quiet and creaky. “I have waited for you. For a long time, I have waited.”

“Who are you?” Flora asked, her hand resting on the hilt of “Whisper.”

The old woman chuckled. “I am she who remembers. She who speaks with the Forest. Some call me the Spirit of the Forest. Others, the Witch of the Thicket. And for you, I am a guide. If you are worthy.”

“Do you know of the Heart of the Island?” Flora asked. “Can you show me the way?”

“The Heart of the Island is not shown, child,” the old woman shook her head. “It is found. Naeri gave you sound advice. But your blood still sleeps. Your memory is still weak. You hear the hum, but you do not understand its song.”

“The signs… they can be deceiving. Especially now that the Darkness has awakened.”

She looked at Flora expectantly. “You have been through much, child. You have seen death. But are you ready to see what is hidden behind the veil? Are you ready to look into the eyes of the Darkness itself?”

“I am ready to do what I must,” Flora said.

The old woman chuckled again. “A good answer. Come with me. I will show you something.”

She led Flora down a narrow path that went deeper into an even darker and more ancient part of the forest. They came to the foot of a huge, black cliff. A dark entrance to a cave gaped in the cliff face. A chill and a primal terror emanated from it. And that same low, vibrating hum now came from here. It was so strong that the very ground seemed to tremble underfoot.

“What is this place?” Flora asked.

“This is the Womb of Darkness,” the old woman answered. “The place where it sleeps. The place where it gathers its strength. And the place… where you might find what you seek. Or perish.”

She looked at Flora with her piercing eyes.

“Do you still wish to go on, Child of Memory? Or will you turn back, before it’s too late?”

Flora looked at the dark, sinister entrance to the cave. Then at the old woman. Then at her hand, which was gripping the hilt of “Whisper.”

She knew she had no other choice.

“I am going,” she said firmly.

The old woman nodded, and something akin to approval flickered in her eyes.

“Then go. But remember my words. Do not trust your eyes. Listen to your heart. And may the memory of your ancestors be with you. For you will need it down there.”

With these words, the old woman stepped back into the shadows and disappeared, as if she had never been there.

Flora was left alone before the entrance to the Womb of Darkness.

The second trial was beginning. And it promised to be the most terrifying of all.
