âHeâs definitely going to kill you, trial or not, tough life, huh?â
Of course, heâs here too, âDo you live in the walls?â
âSomething like that.â
âHow is that even possible?â
âAncient spells, an artefact and an equally crazy bitch hellbent on making my life miserable.â
Stunned to silence since I wasnât expecting him to answer, I try turning towards the source of his voice, determined to ask for a more elaborate answer but the ties slam me back.
I so did not like magical stuff anymore.
âYou really have to get out of here whilst they are in session, it could be your only chance of getting out of here in one piece.â
âWhat is the use? Iâll just end up in bigger shit, Iâd rather just wait it out.â
âAh, you are awaiting your knight in shining armour, I didnât peg you for that type of girl, you seemedâ¦stronger.â
His statement irks me as he no doubt intended and I almost jump out of the chair, âYou take that back Casper, I am not weak.â
âThere it is,â he starts smug, âThereâs the fire, now use that to save yourself.â
âHow am I supposed to do that? These ties are magical, are you blind too?â
âYes they are magical, but so are you, so get out of them, itâs a simple spell, they teach it in Magic 101.â
âI canât do magic, I donât know any Magic 101 crap, magic is how I landed in this mess in the first place!â
âCalm down little one, donât feel self-conscious. We are all lacking in some way. It is not a crime to be, you know⦠slow.â
Oh, the nerve of this man, âIâ¦â I go to retort when the weight of the ties lifts suddenly and my limbs spring free.
âThere, easy peasy, now go.â
âWhat about you, letâs leave together, I canât leave you here?â
âWhy not?â
The genuine curiosity and confusion in his tone almost breaks my heart, but I hold out.
âItâs the humane thing to do, you saved my life so Iâm indebted to you.â
As soon as those words leave my lips, a sudden weight settles on my chest.
âYou idiot!â He sighs, âYou really didnât listen in school, did you?â
âWhat was that? What do you mean? And donât call me that.â
âMage survival guide 101; Never make a deal with a fae and donât tie yourself to one.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âIt means,â I can tell how frustrated the man is and it chaffs, âYou are tied to me till Faery deems the debt repaid.â
âOh, thatâs it?â I ask relieved, heâd made it seem like it was something more.
âYouâ¦â
âFinish that, call me that one more time. I dare you.â I was going to become stupid if they kept calling me that.
âThink of it as a sort of soul tie,â he starts, wisely refraining from calling me names, âIf I get harmed so do you, and vice versa. Do you get it now? We are completely linked!â
âSo, what?â I ask not really seeing the big issue, âWe just need to get out of here together and boom debt paid, bye-bye irritating ghost.â
I ignore the pang in my chest as I utter those words. Had I gotten attached? Already?
âThe only issue with your âfool proofâ plan is that Iâm anchored to this place using an ancient artefact, so I canât leave.â
By now Iâm already creeping out of the room, confident heâs going to follow.
âOk, so just point me in the artefactâs direction so that we can get the hell out of here.â
âThis is a foolâs errand. You canât take it, if it were that simple I wouldnât have been stuck here for a century.â
âSay what?â CENTURY?
âHow old are you? â¦You know what donât answer that, and we wonât know until we try, I canât just give up with no effort.â
âSays the girl who was ready to sit and wait for death.â
âWhat do you call what you are doing?â
âTouché. Fine letâs go, hurry, I hope the dragon doesnât trigger the wards.â
I ignore the words following the sudden urge to head in specific directions, must be his doing, I hate it but itâs better than bickering out loud. We reach an ornate brass door that could fit a ten-foot being walking through it upright.
âEight feet, you are just short.â
Again, I ignore him as we get into the room; I expect to see an array of rare objects spread around, but it was empty bar the small pool of glowing water in the middle.
Curious, I edge closer, peering inside the pool. It was clean and sparkly. I just wanted to kneel and gulp down to my fill, but I resisted my attention pulled to the intricately decorated sword drawn at the bottom of the pool; black with gold and glittery adornments, I assumed to be diamonds; it was a work of art.
I straighten up aware we didnât have the time to ogle, âWell,â I speak to the âempty roomâ, âWhere is the artefact?â
âYou were looking at it.â
I let out a screech since I wasnât expecting to get the answer from a suddenly corporeal man; he looked fuller. More man, less ghost.
âWoah! You lookâ¦â
âItâs the sword, it sort of⦠helps.â
âOk⦠but that looks like a drawing.â
âThatâs how itâs supposed to be unless you pick it up.â
Not weird at all I muse heading closer to the pool. I kneel and attempt to reach for the ânot drawingâ but before my hand gets to it, he slaps it away.
âOw! Why did you do that?â
âThatâs not normal water,â
âYeah, no shit sherlock.â
âNo, it will harm you, you reckless thing, donât just shove your hand in there if you donât want to lose it!â
âSpeaking from experience?â
Well, look at that. I didnât think it was possible for him to turn any paler.
âItâs sort of calling to me, it feels like something familiar. I donât think it would harm me,â I say with conviction staring down at the pool, having stood up after he slapped my hands away.
I kneel again and this time he doesnât stop me though he doesnât look convinced. Holding my breath, I skim my fingers on the surface of the pool and when nothing happens I dip them farther, despite the tingly feeling travelling up my arm. I make a grasp for the sword and Iâm appropriately shocked when it feels solid.
I retrieve my hand, sword firmly grasped expecting something huge to happen, and it could just be my âamazingâ luck but something does happen.
One second everything was fine and the next Iâm writhing on the floor my body engulfed in intense pain as the blasted sword glows, still in my hand.
âShit! Let it go Mahina! Drop it or it will kill you.â
âWhat is happening?â I ask still writhing in pain.
âItâs feeding, why didnât I think of that, itâs been submerged and starved of magic for a long time, of course itâs going to feed first and now itâs going to drain you,â he mutters moving to crouch down next to me hands outstretched to help.
As soon as those words leave his lips, the pain dissipates as fast as it had appeared.
I look up at the completely baffled man, but before he says anything, a loud siren wails through the room. The whole of Faery probably heard it.
âWeâve been made,â Casper states the obvious.
Scrambling to my feet I hurtle after him just making it out the door before it shuts with a resolute thud.
The black sword in my hands had grown to almost my height, which was terrifying.
âHere you go.â I say handing it to him as we creep towards the next door, âBefore I disembowel myself.â
Iâm met with silence, and turning to my companion I realise why; he was fadingâ¦again.
âYou know, you have a bad habit of disappearing when shit hits the fan.â
âItâs not my fault, I canât help it, Iâm still not fully healed from the fight earlier.â
Gratitude and guilt have me swallowing my words as I finally make it to the door.
âThis was too easy, where are they?â I ask opening the door to leave the cursed building.
Nothing could have prepared me for the sight outside.
âThere they are.â
âOh shit.â
