I jolt upright in bed the next morning, with no recollection of how I had ended up there, to find a tiny face hovering above me.
I swat the thing like a fly, letting out a tiny scream as I sit up, reaching for Blue who must have snuck back into my bed during the night.
My scream jolts Blue awake and he wakes up, head butting into another one, earning a few curses from the third one.
âWhat the f...â
âBaby!â I reprimand on autopilot.
âWhat is happening right now?â I ask again.
âItâs like a train wreck in slow motion,â comes from Dru.
âOK people, what is going on right now?â
âWhat is going on is that karma is real.â The third, are they pixies?... Says.
âYes, we are pixies, my name is Aodhà n, the green one is Enid and the one you just gave a concussion though well-deserved is Arieen, it is a pleasure to meet and work with you and the little one.â
âWell, Aodhà n I would say the same only problem is I donât know why you are here.â
âLady Eliane has assigned us to you to help take care of the little boy and keep him safe while you go on about your business.â
âOh wow, thatâs awfully kind of her.â
Arieen is coming to, and I thought I had the mouth of a sailor before Blue came, but she outmatches me, the mouth on the little thing.
âSheâs supposed to take care of Blue?â I ask sceptically.
âShe might not look like it but sheâs amazing with the little ones and very loyal too, we tried to wash out the rest but sadly it is genetic, you should meet her mother.â Aodhà n explains fondly.
I turn to fully face the pixie in question, sparkling blue with white hair and twinkling eyes. Sheâs quite stunning once she stops snarling that is.
âStop that Ari,â comes Enid who has a calming aura around her, and yes, sheâs also green all over, she looks like Te Fiti from Moana, only a million times smaller, âYou did way worse to her yesterday.â
âI just wanted to see if Iâd like working with her.â Arieen defends still scowling at me.
âWhat is she talking about? Are you the one who did that to me at the gate?â
Told you it wasnât me.
âYeah, that was me, it seemed like a great idea at the time, and it was hilarious.â
âNot from my point of view it wasnât,â I answered, advancing on her.
âRelax Mahina, you got your own back, I can still hear the ringing in my head. We are even.â
Blue, who has been following the conversation his head moving like a ping-pong ball finally speaks.
âMama, they are trolls.â
âNow you look here child,â starts Aodhà n affronted.
âYes, they are,â I answer with a laugh.
âHey!â they all exclaim deeply offended.
âSorry itâs because of your colours, he means the trolls from the animationâ
They stare at me blankly.
âThe singing and dancing trolls?â
Still nothing.
âWell Blue, I start turning to my baby boy, âThe first order of business, watching the two troll animations, we have to fix this injustice.â
âBefore all that, may we remind you that you are supposed to finish choosing your courses today or Lady Eliane will come down and do them for you, her words not mine.â Enid supplies sagely.
âIâm almost done anyway; I just have to choose between photography and interior design.â
âGo with interior design, you have an eye for it.â
âWhat do you mean by that, Ari?â
âYes, Lady Eliane showed us your life before you came here to make us understand you better,â Enid adds.
âAnd the work you did in your place is amazing, it looked professionally done,â concludes Aodhà n.
âCanât you do both mama?â Blue pipes up.
âNo, I can, but I wonât. That would be too much workload and that will cut my time with my little man short,â I answer, picking him up and nuzzling his neck, which causes his wings to pop out.
âOops!â
âIt is Okay baby, just put them back in slowly as you practiced with nana.â
âWhy?â asks Enid, âHe can have them out.â
It takes me a moment to catch up.
âYou are rightâ¦Oh my fates you are right, you donât have to hide them all the time anymore baby even your tail.â
âHe has a tai...?â
I hear a smack and Ari shuts up, thank you Aodhà n.
âSo, what else did Nona Ellie share about me?â
âNona Ellie?â Aodhà n asks with a weird look.
âDonât look at me like that. She insisted I call her that, God knows why?â
âGod?â
âSheâs from the human world.â
âOh right, she looks human too, the height, the frizzy hair.â
âHey, Iâm right here!â I exclaim, shutting Aodhà n and Ari up, âAlso youâre one to talk, you are the size of my pinkie,â that was an exaggeration, to be frank, they were about two feet tall.
âThis is a normal height for pixies,â Enid sagely jumps in.
âYou just might be the shortest elf Iâve ever seen,â Ari says grinning wickedly.
âWho said I was an elf?â I retort.
âOr maybe you arenât one, your baby is clearly a unicorn,â She answers.
âA unicorn?â I ask, staring intently at Blue.
âA term used to refer to someone who has traits from multiple species, you did say he has a tail, then he has wings, then the colour of his hair implies Mer shifter, soâ¦unicorn,â Enid explains.
