âIâve got to say your ink is pretty unique.â
The sound comes from behind me referencing the ink I got done at the small of my back as part of our performance costume. Schooling my face, I brace for the interaction.
âThanks, buy me a drink and I might show you the tramp stamp that goes with it,â I say, turning to the person who dares interrupt my solitude. It may be in a bar, but it was still sacred.
âOh, my God! You are one beautiful man,â I blurt my mouth loosened by the number of drinks I had downed.
A snort comes from behind the gorgeous specimen in front of me, and I switch my focus, albeit reluctantly. The guy was fine.
âWoooah! What is in the water where you come from? Girl, you are smoking,â I tell the sexy goddess behind the broody hottie, âYou kind of look like that chick from that movie, The Old Guard, her name was Andy, i think.â
They stare at me all silent and intimidating, but I was well on my way to tipsy so it didnât work. Not giving them a chance to respond I go on.
âSo, whatâs up? Iâm pretty sure youâre not picking me up, not with sex on legs here,â I say, turning to BH.
âOoooooooh! Is it a threesome?â I continue before they could react, âIf so, no thank you,â I declare and turn back to my drink. That was enough deterrent, no one wanted to speak to a bambling drunk.
âUhhhhhhmm,â starts Broody Hottie.
Why? I inwardly whine, why wonât they leave me alone?
âWe are not really here for that,â Andy says.
OK, Mahi you tried, your evil therapist better note that I tell myself pulling my resting bitch face on and turning to the annoying gnats, sexy ones, yes, but still gnats.
âTalk.â
âWe have an offer for you,â starts BH.
âPass,â I cut him off.
âYou are not telling it right,â the hottie with them legs huffs in frustration, scooting to the front. At this point, Iâm signalling Ryder, #myfavoritebartender for a refill.
âDo you believe in mythical creaturesâ¦?â
âItâs Mahi and Maybeâ¦why?â
âWell, long story short we are mage recruiters; basically, there are two groups; light and shadow mages.â
âWhich are you?â
âShadow.â
âCool,â I say gesturing for Ryder to pick up his pace.
âAnd for the past two months, youâve been pinging on our radar like crazy, but every time we get close to finding you, you disappear.â
âFor example, we followed you in here, but about ten minutes since you got into this bar, your signature disappeared.â
âLook,â I say grabbing my glass, âThat is good and all, but you want me to believe Iâm a mage as in a Fae, Elf, or Shifter? That shit? Yeah no, Iâm not that drunk.â
âLook here, pipsqueakâ¦â
âOh look, he found his tongue,â I start going on the defensive, to kill the conversation that was getting weirder by the minute, âI was wondering if you were just here for the intimidation, itâs not working by the way.â
âYou are in danger, if we found you, you bet your ass others are going to and we canât promise they will be nice,â he threatens.
âWell, that is nice and all, but you see those âothersâ, they beat you here and their pitch was way better. Iâm surprised you didnât see them, some mages you are. So once again, no thank you.â
âSo why didnât you go with them?â BH asks.
âI need Ryderâs stuff to survive, I donât do well under authority and they were light mages.â
âWhatâs wrong with that?â Andy asks.
âI found out that most of the time the people who claim to and play nice are the meanest mother truckers on the planet and more often than not also have a God complex, besides they were too pretty and bright.â
âWhatâs wrong with pretty?â BH asks.
âNothing I like pretty but with a side of broody and rugged,â I answer, smirking at him.
âI like her,â Andy declares.
She really looked like Andy from The Old Guard.
âWhatâs your name? I canât keep calling you Andy in my head.â
âI liked that movie,â she says, smirking.
BH scoffs, making me turn to him in surprise., âAm I missing something here?â
âHi, Iâm Morrigan, but you can call me Mor.â
âHold up, was the movie by any chance about you?â
âYes, though they missed quite a few details.â
âBut wait, isnât Morrigan Irish or something like that, Andromache gave a more Grecian or Roman vibe.â
âStaying in one place for long among humans is quite a task for immortals, so I tend to move around often. Different cultures give different names. Iâve forgotten some of them.â
âWhatâs your original name?â
âThe Morrigan.â
âSo, youâre the crow lady.â
âFor someone whoâs sceptical about immortals and magic, you seem to know a lot.â
âI like fantasy and paranormal books, fae ones, especially RH romance.â
âWell, you could be her new best friend,â BH comments.
âOK,â I say, finishing up my drink, âThis has been fun but Iâve got to jet.â
And with that, I haul ass with one last wave to Ryder, who blows me a kiss.
