15 Whispers Beneath the Surface

Mara landed with an ungraceful thud, her body sprawling across the cold stone floor. The impact sent a sharp pain shooting through her sides and knees. For a moment, she simply lay there, stunned, her chest rising and falling as she struggled to regain her bearings.

“Brilliant, Mara,” she muttered, her voice tinged with sarcasm and frustration. “Absolutely brilliant. Forget treasure hunting—I should start a show on disastrous landings. Honestly, people would pay good money to watch this level of disaster artistry.”

She groaned as she shifted her legs, every muscle in her body protesting the fall. Her knees throbbed, and her hands stung from scraping against the ground. Yet her dry humor was enough to push back the gnawing tendrils of panic.

Reaching out tentatively, her trembling fingers brushed against the surface beneath her. It was smooth and cold—unmistakably stone—its surface both unyielding and unwelcoming. Faint ridges etched into the floor offered no comfort. She closed her eyes briefly, exhaling in exasperation. “Of course, I couldn’t have landed on something soft. No, I just had to discover the hardest floor in the known universe.”

Mara forced herself to sit up, wincing at the sharp ache shooting through her sides. Her breathing steadied as the initial shock wore off, though her pulse remained elevated. Slowly, she fumbled through her bag, her hand shaky as she rummaged through its contents. After what felt like an eternity, her fingers closed around her phone. The familiar weight of it brought a measure of comfort. “Please still work,” she muttered, pressing the power button.

The faint glow of the screen illuminated the darkness, sending faint shadows flickering along the jagged walls. Mara lifted her phone higher, using its dim light to scan her surroundings. The scene before her was haunting—a scattering of broken pews lying haphazardly across the floor, their once-pristine surfaces splintered and crumbling.

Her stomach churned as she imagined what might have happened if those pews had collapsed on top of her during her descent. “Oh, that would’ve been a great headline,” she said dryly, wiping imaginary sweat from her brow. “‘Local Idiot Gets Crushed by Falling Furniture While Trespassing.’ Just fabulous.”

She scrambled to her feet, her movements cautious as she glanced nervously upward. The ceiling above her appeared stable—for now—but she didn’t trust it. Her phone’s light flickered faintly, its glow barely cutting through the oppressive darkness. Mara gripped it tightly, her knuckles white as she scanned the room.

Her thoughts churned as she muttered to herself, her voice soft but tinged with both humor and anxiety. “You’re fine, Mara. You’ve got this. It’s just a creepy underground space where everything wants to collapse on you. No big deal. Totally normal.”

Taking a cautious step forward, her foot collided with the edge of a splintered pew, sending sharp pain radiating up her leg. Mara nearly cried out, biting her lip to stifle the sound. She groaned through gritted teeth, muttering a string of creative curses under her breath. “Fantastic. Just fantastic. Someone give me a gold star for most graceful trespasser of the year.”

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

She bent over slightly, clutching her knee for a moment as the pain subsided. Once she could move again, she pushed onward, each step slow and deliberate. The faint pulsing sensation in her chest returned, stronger now, guiding her forward. It was subtle yet insistent, pulling her toward something unseen.

“Alright,” she murmured, her voice tinged with a mix of curiosity and determination. “Let’s see where you’re taking me.”

Her light flickered over the ground as she moved, revealing fragments of stone and wood scattered across the floor. As she stepped forward, her gaze landed on something unusual—a tattered book lying amidst the debris. Its faded cover bore faint markings, symbols she couldn’t quite decipher. Intrigued, she crouched down, her fingers brushing the book’s surface as she carefully lifted it into her hands.

“What do we have here?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. She turned the book over, trying to make sense of its designs. Though time had dulled much of its detail, there was something about it that felt significant—like it held a story waiting to be uncovered.

Her mind raced with possibilities. Could this be what I’ve been looking for? Or maybe it’s a piece of the puzzle—something to help me make sense of the dreams, the whispers...

Before she could delve further, hurried footsteps echoed from above. Mara froze, her grip on the book tightening as her pulse quickened. The sound grew louder, more urgent, like someone pacing frantically across the church floor.

“Oh no, oh no,” she muttered, her voice trembling. She shoved the book into her bag, her hands fumbling as panic surged through her veins. “They’re coming. They’re coming, and I’m down here like some clueless adventurer. Great. Just great.”

She stumbled forward, her phone’s light flickering as she glanced around for an escape route. Her gaze landed on another object—a bundle lying just a few steps away, partially hidden beneath rubble. Without hesitation, she crouched down and snatched it up. The fabric was rough against her fingers, and the bundle felt heavier than she expected.

“I don’t have time for this,” she whispered, shoving the bundle into her bag alongside the book. The footsteps above grew fainter, but her anxiety didn’t ease. She needed to move—and fast.

Her eyes darted around the room, searching for any sign of an exit. The darkness pressed in on her, amplifying the faint sounds from above—a shuffle here, a creak there, as though someone was searching for something.

As her gaze swept across the room, she spotted it—a narrow gap in the wall, barely large enough for her to crawl through. Relief flooded her chest, and she hurried toward it, her bag slung tightly over her shoulder.

The gap was uneven, its edges rough and jagged, but it was her only option. Mara crouched low, peering through the narrow space as her thoughts spiraled once more. What if someone’s waiting on the other side? What if they’ve been tracking me this whole time?

Her stomach churned at the thought. They’ll probably drag me out, humiliate me in front of everyone. ‘Look at this idiot,’ they’ll say. ‘Caught trespassing, stealing artifacts.’ Oh, the shame—

Mara shook her head firmly, clenching her jaw. “No. Stop it, Mara. You’ve come too far to turn back now.”

Taking a deep breath, she slipped through the gap, her movements slow and deliberate as the debris scraped against her skin. Her heart raced with anticipation, her pulse hammering in her ears as she pushed herself forward.

But as she emerged on the other side, she froze.
