Mara crouched low behind an uneven stone wall, her breath catching as she watched the bustle of activity near the churchâs main entrance. The voices from the small crowd were lively, punctuated by occasional laughter and excited murmurs. From her concealed spot near the perimeter, she could make out figures gesturing animatedly, their enthusiasm palpable even from afar.
âWhatâs going on over there?â she whispered to herself, craning her neck to get a better view. She couldnât help but feel a tug of curiosity. The energy emanating from the group was contagiousâit buzzed in the air, alive and electric, filling the ruins with an unusual vitality.
Her mind raced with possibilities. Were they archaeologists? Treasure hunters? Or perhaps amateur explorers who had stumbled upon something extraordinary? The whispers of excitement floated through the air, fueling her imagination. She bit her lip, torn between staying hidden and stepping closer to investigate.
âWhat if they found it?â she muttered under her breath, her thoughts spiraling into overdrive. âWhat if they found the thing Iâve been searching for all this time?â The idea sent a surge of adrenaline through her veins. She clutched the strap of her bag tightly, her knuckles white as her grip tightened.
But then doubt crept in, shadowing her excitement. âOr maybe itâs just some random junk. Maybe they found an old vase or a few chipped bricks and decided to call it a day.â Her lips twisted into a wry smile as she imagined the crowdâs excitement deflating like a balloon. Still, the possibility of them uncovering something significant gnawed at her.
Her thoughts took another turn, wild and speculative. âWhat if itâs something groundbreakingâan artifact thatâll make the news tomorrow? A discovery so important, historians will write books about it?â She shook her head, trying to dispel the fanciful notion. But it refused to fade, leaving her perched on the edge of intrigue.
Maraâs curiosity was relentless, pulling her closer to the ruinsâ edge like a magnetic force. She shifted slightly, peeking through the cracks in the wall to better observe the crowd. Her heart raced as she tried to catch snippets of their conversation, but the distance distorted their words, leaving her with only fragments of sound.
Her overthinking spiraled into paranoia. âWhat if they already know about me?â she mused, eyes narrowing. âWhat if theyâve been watching me sneak around the ruins, waiting for the right moment to confront me?â The thought sent a shiver down her spine, but she quickly brushed it off. No one had spotted herâshe was sure of that. At least, she hoped she was sure.
Frustration bubbled beneath the surface as she wrestled with her thoughts. She was here for a reasonâa purpose far greater than idle curiosity. The groupâs excitement, whatever its source, was a distraction she couldnât afford. Clenching her jaw, she forced herself to turn her back on the crowd, her focus shifting back to the ruins themselves.
Her gaze darted across the perimeter as she began to examine the structure. The churchâs façade loomed above her, its weathered stone walls stretching high into the night sky. Her eyes flicked from corner to corner, searching for an alternative route inside.

Minutes passed as Mara crept along the edge of the building, her movements slow and deliberate. Her fingers brushed against the rough surface of the stones, the cold texture grounding her as she scanned the area. It wasnât long before she spotted itâa narrow opening near the far corner of the ruins, partially obscured by overgrown vines.
Maraâs lips curved into a faint smile, relief washing over her. âThere you are,â she whispered, crouching down to inspect the gap. It was small, barely large enough for her to squeeze through, but it would have to do.
With one final glance over her shoulder to ensure no one had noticed her, she lowered herself onto her hands and knees and began crawling through the narrow passage. The stones pressed against her sides as she moved forward, the jagged edges scraping lightly against her clothing. Dirt clung to her hands and knees, but she barely noticed, her focus entirely on making it inside.
The air changed the moment she emerged into the ruins. It was colder, heavier, filled with a sense of foreboding that wrapped around her like an invisible shroud. Mara straightened slowly, brushing the dirt off her palms as she took in her surroundings.
The sight before her stole her breath.
Rows and rows of pews stretched into the distance, their surfaces worn and splintered from years of neglect. The fractured remains of stained-glass windows framed the edges of the church, their colorful shards reflecting the pale moonlight. The altar at the far end was almost unrecognizable, its carvings dulled by layers of dust and debris.
âJust like my dreams,â Mara whispered, her voice trembling. The familiarity was overwhelming, stirring something deep within her chest. Every detail felt like a fragment of her memories, piecing themselves together in a way that left her dizzy.
Her heart quickened as she stepped forward, her footsteps muffled against the stone floor. She moved cautiously, her gaze darting from side to side as she tried to trace the source of the familiarity. Her mind raced with thoughts of what she might findâhidden compartments, secret passageways, anything that might confirm the significance of this place.
As she reached the middle of the aisle, Mara stopped abruptly, her gaze drawn to a particular spot. It wasnât marked or distinguished in any way, but the pull she felt was undeniableâa force beckoning her forward with quiet insistence.
She dropped to her knees, her hands brushing against the cold stone floor as she searched for clues. Her fingers traced the cracks and ridges, pressing lightly against the surface in hopes of finding somethingâanythingâthat would reveal the truth. But the stones remained steadfast, offering no answers.
Frustration gnawed at her as she leaned back on her heels, exhaling sharply. âCome on,â she muttered, her voice laced with desperation. âThere has to be something here.â
Her thoughts spiraled again, wild and speculative. âWhat if this is it? What if the answers Iâve been searching for are right beneath me, and I just canât see them?â She pressed her palms against the ground, her frustration mounting as her fingers dug into the stone. The force she felt was stronger now, more urgent, yet she couldnât decipher its meaning.
And then the ground shifted.
Mara gasped, her body lurching forward as the solid surface beneath her began to crumble. Her heart raced as panic surged through her veins, her hands flailing instinctively as she tried to steady herself. But the stone gave way, leaving her grasping at empty air.
The descent was quick, her body tumbling into the unknown as shadows enveloped her. The sensation of falling seemed to stretch endlessly, the darkness pressing against her senses with suffocating intensity. Her heart pounded in her chest, her mind racing with questions and fear.
And then it stopped.
