Gregory groaned when someone knocked on the door. Jenn and Yukiko muttered as they were woken up, as well. âAwake,â Gregory called.
âYou have an hour before you need to be back to the hall,â Dia called to them. âBreakfast should be ready when you make it downstairs.â
All three of them got out of bed, letting their aether clear their minds and refresh their bodies. Blinking as the cobwebs of fatigue fled, they dressed and got ready for the day.
âYou hurt them before the game was called for the break,â Gregory said.
âWe did,â Yukiko agreed. âThey hurt themselves twice over, though.â
âNot changing their scouting until late in the day, and then using half their forces to attack us,â Jenn nodded.
âThey were smart enough to pull back and dig in,â Gregory said, ânot that you were in any position to chase them. The harassment from the light cavalry kept them running and gave you a solid idea of what they had left at that point.â
âNeed to make sure we have snacks with us again,â Jenn said. âShould we bring an extra?â
âIt wouldnât hurt,â Yukiko replied. âEven if Farin and Mavic bring something today, we can share the extra among us. How was she doing, Greg?â
âMavic? She was fading fast at the end of the night. Iâm pretty sure sheâs body path, which is odd with her water magic, but she probably focused on it to help her survive,â Gregory said as they finished dressing. âShe was kind of rough to start with, but she admitted that was because of how she was being treated and the rumors. She mellowed out by the end of the day.â
âGood. More people who see us as we are will help break those rumors faster than trying to fight them,â Yukiko smiled as she opened the door to the room. âLetâs go eat.â
~*~*~
Breakfast was mostly quiet as they ate as quickly as they could. Zenim had packed their snacks for them and had made the extra just in case. Gin walked with them to tactics class, as his own class still had an ongoing game.
âWho is teaching physical conditioning in your absence?â Yukiko asked Gin.
âInda,â Gin replied. âI should be back there today, though, even if I am a little sleepy.â
âGame ending soon?â Gregory asked.
âIt should end in the first two hours. Theyâve been playing since the first day back, but it is three-on-one now.â
âWe might finish ours today,â Jenn said. âWell, they will. Iâm the one sitting out.â
âIncluding Farin was a good idea,â Gin said. âMaking an ally is always good.â
âAnd heâs a good person,â Clover said.
âHe has been a vast improvement over Chucky,â Ling nodded.
âI had a couple of ideas,â Gregory said, changing the topic, âregarding the games, sir.â
âGo ahead,â Gin said.
âThe players who are sitting out should be removed from the room. Jenn should be completely blank if she gets dragged in, like any new commander would be when they go to the battlefield.â
âAgreed. I believe Egil already plans for that.â
âThe coordinators should be from opposing teams, not their own team.â
âWhy?â Gin asked.
âA team that works together might be able to arrange signals that the instructor wouldnât see or understand to pass along more information than should be passed. Itâll help distance things more, adding another layer of security.â
âYes, that was also discussed,â Gin smiled. âIâm glad you saw it.â
âAh,â Gregory deflated a little. âI should have known that you or Egil would see the potential troubles, sir.â
âWe have. The goal now is to get you ready for the end game,â Gin said with a smile. âEgil will explain the tournament⦠possibly tomorrow. It requires all preliminary games to be done. There are only three others besides mine to have run this long. Well them, and yours, but you started a day later.â
âThe tournament will start after the solstice, wonât it?â Jenn asked.
âCorrect,â Gin said.
The sun wasnât even hinting at rising when they got to the tactics building.
âGood luck,â Gin said as he climbed the stairs to the third floor.
âThank you, sir,â they said, heading to their own class.

Farin came into the room a few minutes later. Though he looked a little groggy, he moved with confidence. He looked at them for a few seconds, then greeted them with, âGood morning.â
âBody path,â Yukiko said. âGood morning, Farin. We wonât be making any bold plays for a few turns, at least. We should have you rest a bit longer and see if you can shake off the fatigue.â
âHmm⦠I do feel a little foggy,â Farin nodded. âI will task my men with following your commands. Theyâll lose a little morale, but not enough to hurt, and theyâll still have a clear leader.â
âUnderstood,â Ben said from behind Farin. âYou will be out of command of your men until you tell me and a new turn begins.â
âThank you, sir,â Farin said. He went over to the far side of the room and rested against the corner, using the walls to keep him upright.
When the fourth bell began to chime Ben nodded. âThe appointed time to begin.â
âIâll start,â Clover said. âI move across the river. I know itâs clear for at least a turn, so I can cross without stressing my army. The hounds will keep the screen ahead of me, with orders to retreat if they encounter anything more than a scout.â She moved her pieces. âThatâs all I can do this turn.â
âItâs fine,â Yukiko said, all too aware of Cloverâs fingers fumbling her pieces a little. âWeâre planning on staying back for this turn. We have the money to upgrade our heavy cavalry to elites, and that will take three turns. Iâll give the men a small bonus for their good work, which will help offset any loss of morale as Farin isâ¦â She paused when Farin snored in the corner. âAs Farin is recovering his aether.â
Gregory made his notes. âOkay. We should be good, then.â
âInteresting,â Ben said. âCautious. I expected you to be aggressive at this moment.â
âNo,â Ling said, shaking her head. âTheyâve had time to be prepared for us. Theyâll be expending resources, expecting us to be upon them this turn or next.â She went to motion at the board to illustrate her point, but her hand slapped a few pieces, scattering them. âSorry,â she said as she picked them up and reset them.
âI understand,â Ben said. âNot many would think that way. They wouldâve just smelled blood and rushed forward.â
âAnd into traps,â Yukiko said. âWe hold and wait for our upgrade, and then weâll advance.â
âIâll go wait for Mavic,â Gregory said.
Gregory slipped into the hall. It was a tedious wait, but after about ten minutes, Mavic stepped out of her classroom.
âMorning,â Gregory said.
âMorning,â Mavic replied dully. âAre you ready?â
âI am, but you donât look like you are,â Gregory said.
âBody path,â Mavic said. âNot mind, like them. They think they can catch you unprepared.â
âIâm sure they do,â Gregory chuckled. âWhy donât you start this time?â
âOkay,â Mavic said, then smiled. âNo movement.â
âShocking,â Gregory snorted. âOkay, hereâs the movements from our side.â Gregory showed her on the map.
âBut⦠oh, they arenât going forward right now,â Mavic snickered. âOkay. Well, nothing left to discuss for this turn.â
âDid you sleep okay?â Gregory asked.
âAs good as I expected to with the short time we had,â Mavic said before her stomach grumbled.
âMissed breakfast?â
âYes.â
Gregory pulled out a piece of jerky. âHave a piece. I had breakfast.â
Mavic took it, popping it into her mouth immediately. âThanks,â she said around the meat.
âLetâs just hang out for a second,â Gregory said. âNo need for them to know you had a bite.â
âThanks,â Mavic said, chewing slower. âYou look more rested.â
âBody path refreshes your body, but mind refreshes your mind,â Gregory said. âLike them.â
âI might have made a mistake taking body,â Mavic mumbled around her food, then swallowed.
âIn the long run, itâll help you survive,â Gregory said, âbut the tournament is probably going to strain you.â
âYeah,â Mavic sighed. âThanks again.â
âSee you in a bit,â Gregory grinned.
âThey arenât going to know what to think,â Mavic snickered as she turned away. âThis will be funny.â
~*~*~
Gregory stood in the hall, waiting. Mavic had been slower and slower coming out each turn, but he knew whyâ the Han clan was panicking. When he heard raised voices, muffled by a door, he was sure he knew where they were coming from.
âGuess I still have a bit of time,â Gregory said, leaning against the wall.
The farthest door opened and a group of apprentices came out, followed by a stern-looking older woman. Gregory pulled foresight up and waited as the group got closer to him. With a quick movement, he sidestepped just as Jasonâs fist shot out. Instead of hitting Gregory, he hit the wall.
âStop!â Ella barked with iron in her tone.
Jason glared at Gregory. âCanât keep foresight up all the time.â
âYouâre right,â Gregory said evenly. âNice to see Jenn being kind and not breaking your head open like a melon earned us some goodwill. Next time, maybe she wonât be kind, since you obviously arenât going to be.â
Ella pushed her way to the front of the group, glaring at Jason. âArgon, move. The rest of you, keep going.â She was obviously upset.
Jasonâs lip twitched. âOf course, Instructor Voulaz.â
More doors opened and other instructors, including Paul, poked their heads out. With the Eternal Flame moving away, doors shut again. Paul said something to his class, then stepped into the hall, closing the door behind him.
âPettit, what happened?â Paul asked.
âArgon tried to break my face,â Gregory said. âI stepped aside.â
âAt the same time the punch was thrown,â Ella said. âYou expected trouble?â
âWith them? Always.â
âWith good reason,â Paul snorted. âThe Eternal Flame has lost to him and his wives every time they have fought. Some would back off and reevaluate, but they just keep charging forward.â
âI think heâs upset that Jenn brained him,â Gregory said. âNormally, heâs calmer than that. Orâ¦â
âHe was testing how cautious you are,â Paul said, then looked at the dent in the wall where Jasonâs fist had connected. âPossibly both.â
âAgreed,â Gregory exhaled. âSorry to disturb your group, sir, maâam.â
âThey are petulant children,â Ella snorted. âEven the previous clanless are now swaggering like the world owes them.â
âIâd wondered how that had happened,â Paul said. âThey accepted them?â
âSecond day,â Ella shrugged.
âHmmâ¦â Paul said. âThank you for stopping the fight. I need to get back to the room.â
âHow is their game going?â Ella asked.
âThe report will be given later today, Iâm sure.â
âLike mine,â Ella yawned. âIâm going to rack out until this evening. Good day.â
âGood day,â Paul said as Ella left. âGregory, weâll be out in a moment. Theyâre still debating the best course of action.â
âWonât matter,â Gregory shrugged. âNext turn ends the game, unless they have a major surprise.â
âWe will see,â Paul said as he headed back to the Han classroom.
~*~*~
Gregory was proven right two turns later.
Mavic looked at her notes and shook her head. âMight as well get them so we can call it done.â
âSure,â Gregory smiled. âIt was good to work with you.â
âThanks,â Mavic sighed. âTheyâre going to ream me, though.â
âThey would be wrong to do so,â Gregory said, âbut we know theyâll look to lay the blame away from themselves.â He dug out some jerky. âDelay it a moment?â
Mavic gladly took the offering. âSure.â
When the jerky was gone, they both retrieved their instructors and laid out the battle. Paul and Ben went over the stats and modifiers before nodding.
âLooks like we can return to our respective classes and end the game,â Ben said. âYour students are a treasure, Erichson.â
âI wish I could say the same, but the last few turns have been nothing but arguments and recriminations. Theyâll seek to blame Mavic.â
âYes they will, and I will pull apart all their faults,â Ben said with a gleam in his eyes. âMavic, give me your notes.â
âYes, sir,â she said, handing the folder over.
âPettit?â Paul asked, holding out his hand.
Gregory handed over his notes. âThank you for your understanding, sir,â he told Ben.
âIf I had twenty of your friends, I could rest easily for the next few decades knowing that the borders would be safe,â Ben said before he motioned Mavic over to him. âLetâs go break the news.â
âLetâs go explain the finish to them,â Paul said, striding away.
