Gregory was amazed at how quickly the next two weeks flew by. Everything had gone right back to routine⦠well, mostly back to routine, if he was honest. There was some awkwardness among the group now, with glances and muted conversations about Gregory.
Gregory wasnât much better; he let his gaze linger at times, recalling what heâd seen at the bathhouse and how interested each of the women had been. Clover, especially, since sheâd been the most daring of the bunch, besides Yukiko.
Roshana would place her hand on Gregoryâs back or shoulder during tactics class now, leaning in more to discuss things when they worked together. Gregory was acutely aware of her bountiful nature in those moments, but he was able to keep his mind working.
Other than those small differences, the routine of class and training settled right back as it had been. Gregory started to feel the different magics easierâ he was able to pick out each personâs magic, even when the instructorsâ and studentsâ strands intersected each other.
~*~*~
Gregory smiled as he settled in to sleep with Jenn and Yukiko cuddled up next to him. The novices had been excited when they broke apart to go to bed. Theyâd been keeping track and were certain they would be ranking up again in a day or two.
Eager to be apprentices, Gregory thought. I donât blame them. Being among the best of their class is something to be proud of. Kissing both of his wives one more time, he slipped off into slumber.
When he opened his eyes a moment later, he chuckled. âDarkness, my heart, how are you?â He turned to face her and his breath caught for a second. The darkness had faded more, and he could make out the vague shape of a person sitting in the shadows.
âYes, you are growing stronger, which peels back my shadows,â Darknessâ voice held her joy.
âStill a darkness among shadows, but even that makes me glad. It means Iâm getting closer to you, dear one.â
âYes,â Darkness sniffled. âAnother couple of tiers and you will be ready to see me and, maybe⦠touch me briefly.â
âI want to. I will grow in power as fast as I can, Darkness.â
âI know,â Darkness replied. âI am helping, but I am also mitigating.â
âWhat?â
âIf I did not help you, you would have bulled through the novices ranks much faster than even your friends have,â Darkness said. âI siphoned off the excess and have it set aside to give back later, for you, your wives, and friends. Training three paths should have had you growing at least thrice as fast as anyone else.â
âBut doing so wouldâve made us stand out even more,â Gregory murmured. âThank you.â
âYou already stand out, my heart. I do not want you garnering the wrong attention before you have a chance to grow enough to defend yourself.â
âYuki would agree with you, and I do, too. Wait, is that why the novices are a little more powerful than we were?â
âYes. I am using them to show that the clan grows fast, but also so they overshadow your growth a tiny bit.â
âIâm not comfortable with you using them as bait.â
âThey are not bait. They are misdirection,â Darkness reassured him. âI will keep them as safe as I can, for you and for them.â
Exhaling, he nodded, then sat up on the edge of the bed closest to her, unconcerned about his nakedness. âAnd the dream I couldnât remember before the bathhouse?â
âThat was your magic at work. I didnât touch the dream, nor stop you from remembering.â
âAh, okay. Are they allâ¦?â
âPast wives?â Darkness asked with a giggle. âYes. Your rebirth brought them all back, even the one or two that were born before you.â
âSome are older?â Gregory asked.
âYes, though not as old as Bishop or Dia,â Darkness reassured him. âNothing you would find⦠objectionable.â
âDo you know all of them?â
âKnow for certain? No. But a few, I am sure about. A few more resonate correctly.â
âRoshana?â
âYes, dearest. She is indeed one of them. You enjoyed seeing her, too. Would it shock you if I said I was more endowed than she is?â The shadow in the darkness shifted as if displaying her chest.
âI canât say Iâm not thinking about it now,â Gregory snorted.
âIt is almost time,â Darkness sighed. âThey all do care and want to love you, but will abide by Yukiâs rules, dearest. You will not have another wife for a while yet, so do not worry.â
âAlright. Yuki and Jenn are really okay with this?â
âYes. They are excited, almost as much as you are, and I can see how excited that is,â Darkness whispered, hunger in her words.
âThatâs because of you, my heart,â Gregory said, motioning at what she was referring to. âAnd if weâre done, I need to try and claim my heart.â He launched himself off the bed, making it a little more than a single step before the vice of darkness grasped him.
âSoonâ¦â Darkness whispered as his consciousness fled.
~*~*~
Gregory woke with a shuddering gasp, his whole body trembling. âOh, Vera,â he panted.
âClose,â Yukiko exhaled as she lay atop him. âGood morning, our love.â
âYes, good morning,â Jenn murmured, moving to kiss him. âWe thought you would have woken sooner.â
âDarkness,â Gregory said.
Yukiko looked at Jennâs bare chest, where her medallion glowed with a single orange ring. âOh, we didnât notice.â
Jenn giggled. âWe had other matters in hand⦠and mouth andâ¦â
âI noticed,â Gregory laughed when she trailed off. âIs itâ?â
He cut off when the third bell started to chime.
âSadly,â Jenn sighed.
âYouâre not done yet,â Yukiko said as she got off Gregory and lay on the edge of the bed. âCome on, hurry up so we arenât late. Dearest, grab our clothes, please?â
Gregory sat up, then smirked when Jenn dove between Yukikoâs thighs. âI see. Must have been a deal about who got me or seconds?â
âNo deal. Sheâs mine to use as I wish,â Yukiko gasped. âThatâs what she loves and what I love.â
Shaking his head, Gregory went to the armoire to get their clothes and spare himself from another rise, which would only delay them further. To stop the small sounds of pleasure behind him, he filled them in on what Darkness told him as he dressed. He was just finishing when Yukiko and Jenn came up on either side of him, both grinning.
âSheâs right, our heart,â Jenn said. âWeâre excited about them joining us. Is that okay with you? The fact that we want them, too?â
Gregory paused, letting the idea bounce around in his head for a moment. âYes. I like the idea of you both being loved by them. It makes it easier for me to accept.â
âGood, because we want them to love you, too,â Yukiko added. âThank you for our clothes, dearest. Why donât you go see our friends? Weâll join you at the table.â
âOkay.â
When Gregory made it down to the next floor, he found Clover and Ling waiting. Cloverâs smile was large as she broke into one of her dances. Her medallion had six rings, illuminated yellow.
âWe grew, we grew, we grew!â she chanted as she danced.
âYou did,â Gregory chuckled. âCongratulations to both of you.â
âThe novices knew,â Ling said thoughtfully. âI find it interesting that theyâre growing so equally and that we are in sync with each other in that growth.â
Gregory pulled his medallion out, showing them the glowing orange ring. âWe are.â
âInitiateâ¦â Clover said, touching his medallion. âSo high already.â
âYouâll be there, too, in time,â Gregory said.
âWe know,â Ling said softly, touching Cloverâs arm. âWe have faith in Aether⦠and you.â When she saw his eyes widened slightly, she quickly added, âThe three of you.â
âIn all three of you,â Clover nodded, âbut you a little bit more, at least for me. I believe the past is connected to now.â
Ling glanced at Clover, then nodded. âSo do I, butâ¦â
âIâm not disturbed by it,â Gregory told them. âAnd I believe we are, too.â
Cloverâs smile grew wider. âReally?â
âReally, really,â Gregory smiled back at her. âYuki and Jenn said theyâll join us at the tables. Come on, the novices are probably waiting like you were.â
âWe were,â Daciana said as she came up the stairs, âbut I heard you, so we came up.â She hesitated, then blurted out, âIs it okay? To be connected both past and now?â
âIt is,â Gregory said. âDid you grow in rank?â
âAnd in tier,â Nessa said, coming up beside Daciana, showing them that her medallion was glowing with a single yellow ring.
âCongratulations,â Ling told them.
A small round of congratulations went around the group before Gregory got them moving downstairs.
âWe donât want Dia getting upset with us,â he told them as he led the way.
They all agreed with that, but Victoria asked, âGreg? Are you okay with the idea of what we all want? I worry youâre just saying yes, but you really arenât.â
Gregory paused on the bottom floor, looking back at her. âIâm nervous, but yes, as long as our friendship is undamaged and Yuki approves. But it wonât be soon.â
âResonance, first,â Nessa nodded. âWe know, and weâll wait.â
âThey donât have to,â Daciana sighed. âAlready at the right rank to try finding resonance.â
âEven if they find it tomorrow, they wonât be folded in right away,â Yukiko said as she came down the stairs. âClover, Ling, we should talk before you try finding your resonance. We might be able to help you.â
âYes, Yuki,â Clover nodded quickly.
âAgreed,â Ling added.
âAnd ladies?â Yukiko added, addressing the three novices. âThe same goes for you. In fact, if you rush, it will likely stop your chances entirely. Safe and slowâ that is the way.â
âYes, Yuki,â Daciana said, lowering her head as her tail curled between her legs.
âWeâll keep her and us in check,â Nessa said. âWe follow, Yuki.â
âGood,â Yukiko smiled. âNow, think about how your class will react when they catch sight of your new rank.â
Daciana grinned broadly, her tail starting to wag again. âOh, that will be fun!â
Bishop and Dia were already seated at the table when the group entered the room. Diaâs smile grew as she saw the hint of Dacianaâs medallion. âNovices, already apprentice tier?â
Daciana displayed her medallion proudly. âYes, because Aether leads us.â
Gregoryâs eye twitched at her phrasing, but no one saw it.
âHe leads all of us,â Dia agreed. âWe are his guard. What about the rest of you?â
Dia and Bishop praised Clover and Ling when they showed them how theyâd grown. Both older magi were silent for a long moment when Gregory, Yukiko, and Jenn showed them their medallions.
âOur clan will be sought after next yearâ¦â Bishop said. âWeâll need some stronger magi to help guide the newer ones.â
âYes. I believe the elder will make arrangements, but I will send him a letter,â Dia said. âYou three again exceed what we think should be. Well done. Your contemporaries will be beside themselves when they find out. I suggest you keep your power hidden as long as you can.â
âWe will, Dia,â Jenn said.
âGood,â Dia exhaled.
âIâll have breakfast ready shortly,â Zenim said when they all took their seats.
~*~*~
When they entered the classroom, Roshana was already there. Her medallion was plainly visible as she greeted them. âGood morning to you all.â
âYou made it to the third rank of apprentice? Well done,â Yukiko grinned. âDid you grow faster than you had anticipated?â
Roshana blinked for a moment, then bowed her head. âI did. Itâs because of the Peaceful Fist, isnât it?â
âIn part,â Jenn grinned. âWhen are you going to join the clan? Weâd welcome you into our ranks.â
Roshana clearly wanted what Jenn was asking for, but she shook her head. âI have to wait. I donât want to be separated from you all now.â
âWhy would you be?â Paul asked, having stepped into the doorway.
âSir,â Roshana bowed along with the others to him. âMagi-killer separated all the larger clans into smaller groups. I figured he didnât want any class to have all members of a single clan.â
âHe didnât,â Paul agreed. âThese three have a persuasive charisma about them, weâve noticed. Itâs why I invited Farin when I did, because he was going to try joining them, otherwise. It also turned out to be the right call. He will be a good commander and is making progress with his magics and skill in combat.â
âSo she shouldnât join our clan?â Gregory asked.
âShe can,â Paul said, holding up a hand to add, âbut Iâd suggest she wait until you all leave for the tournament. That will make it impossible for others to cause trouble.â
Roshana bowed deeply. âI will wait, sir. Thank you. I was afraid you would say if I did, Iâd have to leave the group.â
âNo, it would causeâ¦Â problems if you did it now.â
âUnderstood. Thank you, and Magi-killer, sir.â
âThank you,â Gregory said, echoed by the others as they all bowed to him.
âThat kind of loyalty is hard to find. How I wish youâd joined our clan,â he sighed wistfully, then went back to business. âOkay, the game today is Roshana against Gregory. Fields with light forest. Get to it. Roshana, youâre a water magi, of course. Gregory, letâs give you alchemy.â
âYes, sir,â all six said in unison before moving to set the board.
