Gregory woke to a knock on the outer door of the suite. Dia informed them that it was time to get up if they wanted food before they were due at the hall.
Yukiko was the first out of bed. She yawned as she led the way to the armoire. âWeâre more rested than most of the others, at least.â
âExcept the Shining Light,â Gregory said. âThey take small meditative naps while Iâm out of the room. The clanless that joined them is doing his best, but itâs obvious that he just started the spirit path.â
âHowâs their game going?â Jenn asked.
âThe bulk of the fighting will likely go on today. They were far more aggressive than I thought they would be, but for all that, theyâre not exposing themselves. Itâs going to end up a war of attrition in the woods.â
âHow is Hayworthâs side doing?â Yukiko asked as she got dressed.
âThey started badly. Their scouts were getting butchered for most of yesterday. They took the opposite stance, though, digging in and creating a hard defense. Itâs going to be interesting when Hayworth and Klein come to blows.â
âOh, good point. Double spatial magi,â Jenn said.
âHowâs your game going?â
âOkay, but not great,â Yukiko said. âWeâll go into detail during breakfast. The others will want to hear about it, too.â
Gregory nodded and focused on dressing. On their way downstairs, they greeted Ling and Clover, then found their novice friends waiting for them.
âBreaking routine today?â Gregory asked them. He already knew the answer, as theyâd done it before.
âWeâre supporting our seniors,â Daciana grinned. âA little less studying this morning is fine to bolster their spirits.â
âWe appreciate it,â Yukiko smiled. âWho knows? Maybe your juniors will do the same for you next year.â
âWeâll teach them the ways of the clan,â Victoria said. âAether will be venerated and his path will be followed as we follow it now.â
âBreakfast should be ready,â Dia said from above them on the stairs.
âWeâre going now, Dia,â Gregory said.
Ravol nodded to them as he finished cooking. âJust a minute and Iâll have it ready for you.â
The group thanked him and took their seats.
âAs I was telling Greg,â Yukiko said as she sat down, âwe knocked out one of the Eternal Flame yesterday. They had him going to the river crossing early, but weâd sent Farin and Jenn that way.â
âIt wasnât Jason, sadly,â Jenn sighed. âIt didnât cost us many troops, eitherâ he had conscripts only. It must have been someone theyâd just added. They were probably going to use him as an early warning of the flank.â
âI remember hearing the scream,â Gregory chuckled.
âWe pulled them back, but set a chain of hounds down that flank to give us warning if they moved in force,â Yukiko said. âWeâve been building up heavy cavalry. They donât have the same area damage or denial that Nickâs team had.â
âAnd a few archers,â Clover added. âWeâre also putting money aside so we can add Ling in for the last game.â
Ling smiled at her. âFocus on this game, first. I donât need to play at all.â
âIf one of us gets knocked out, weâll still bring you in next,â Yukiko said. âWeâd like all of usâ¦â She paused, giving Gregory an apologetic look. âAll of us, who are allowed to play, to get the chance to hone their mind.â
âIâm honing mine by seeing what everyone else is doing,â Gregory said. âI think about what I would do or argue for if I was playing.â
âA good use of the time,â Dia said. âDo you think the other coordinators are?â
Gregory hesitated, considering it. âI think Mavic might be. James⦠maybe? James might approach you, or he might not. He asked about the clan, but seemed to back off when I told him the clan requirement.â
âI will speak to any of them, but yes, they must have faith,â Dia replied sadly. âItâs why we never had more than a few novices or apprentices at a time. Since the solstice is past, weâd take them to the tea house to see if they are determined or not.â
âBelief in Aether is required,â Yukiko said softly, her eyes on the women across from her.
âBreakfast,â Ravol said as he pushed a cart over to the table.

Klim gave him a nod when he entered the room. âGood morning, Pettit.â
âMagus Klim, good morning to you, too.â
âDo you think youâd be interested in another sparring match before the end of the year?â Klim asked with a smirk.
Gregory chuckled at her. âI would be glad to test myself against you again, but my clan would need to approve. It would also require that you were free during our week off.â
âIf your clan approves and that can be arranged, your answer is yes?â Klim asked with a wider smile.
âWhy?â Gregory asked her back.
âBecause youâre the most talented fighter with the naginata Iâve ever faced,â Klim said. âI enjoy the challenge you present. Iâd gladly face either armsmaster, as well, but getting them to agree is far harder. Besides, youâll face me with all five weapons, which helps me stretch my skill with them, too.â
âYouâve always been helpful and forthright with me, Magus. If itâs all agreed to, then yes, I will. Hopefully this time, there wonât be a sleet storm to ruin our footing.â
Klim laughed ruefully. âThere is that. I was mollified that it wasnât just me that had that happen to them.â
Gregory rubbed at the back of his head, a sheepish smile in place. âYeah. I felt bad that Egil won that way. I should offer to face him again, too.â
âIâll speak with him,â Klim said. âThen again, maybe your clan will win this tournament, and then youâll get the chance to face him many times.â
âPerhaps,â Gregory conceded.
The sound of people stopped Gregory from adding more. A moment later, Klein led his group into the room, exchanging greetings with them.
When the sounds of the fourth bell died off, Klim cleared her throat. âThe game resumes now. Nilum, off to your room.â
The part-weasel eurtik bowed his head to Klim. âYes, maâam.â
âDid you join their clan?â Gregory asked, catching sight of the emblem on Nilumâs kimono.
âLast night,â Klein answered.
âCongratulations,â Gregory said.
âThank you,â Nilum replied with a smile on his lips. âIâm very happy to be given the chance.â
Klim cleared her throat, and Nilum rushed out of the room.
âSorry, Magus,â Gregory said, bowing to her. âThat was my fault.â
âNo harm done,â Klim said. âLet the game commence.â

Gregory knew the turn would likely be contested, but he wasnât positive, so he waited for James. Standing there, he caught sight of movement from the corner of his eye, and turned to face the stairs. He met Furenoâs eyes as the upset man came stomping down from the floor above.
âPettit,â Fureno sneered. âAt least they know not to let a potential cheater into the tournament.â
âPotential cheater?â Gregory laughed. âAh, I see your clan is still out of touch with reality. Some of us donât try to cheat, trick, or murder our way to the top.â
Furenoâs eyelid twitched as he advanced on Gregory. âWhat are you insinuating?â
âMe? Nothing. Nothing at all.â
Snorting, Fureno went to shove past Gregory, but stumbled and nearly fell when Gregory stepped aside. Falling to his knee, Fureno started to snarl at Gregory, but saw James in the hall and snapped his mouth shut. With a sneer, he got back to his feet and stalked off to the other end of the hall, taking the stairs down to the ground floor.
âWhat was that all about?â James asked when he got closer to Gregory.
âI think he just got knocked out of the game, and well⦠he takes losing badly. He went to shove past me, but I wasnât where he thought I was going to be.â
âI saw you sidestep and him stumble,â James said, shaking his head. âEven having seen your foresight during the tournaments, itâs still surprising to see you a second ahead of anyone trying to hit you.â
âItâs been useful,â Gregory nodded. âI think weâre going to have combat this turn. You ready?â
âOh, yes,â James said as he opened the folder his notes were in. âConsidering where they were last turn, Iâd be surprised if there wasnât combat this turn.â
âDid you want to start?â Gregory asked.
âSure. Okay, thereâs a light foot that comes from this space around this heavy woodâ using it to shield them from detectionâ to this space,â James said, showing him the move.
âWhich means they run into Nilumâs men,â Gregory nodded. âOkay, did you want to drag the watchers out here for combat?â
âI prefer that. Otherwise, theyâll argue about it,â James said. âWell, Hayworthâs group might not, but the last group⦠ugh.â
âIâll drag the watcher for Nilum out here,â Gregory chuckled. âBe right back.â

Hours later, the real combat was about to get underway. Gregory had his notes in order and Klim with him when he stepped into the hall. âI donât think the game will continue too far past this, unless Hayworthâs team has surprises hidden.â
âDo you think thatâs likely?â Klim asked as they waited in the hall.
âAs much as I disliked him during the novice year, I can say heâs intelligent. He seems receptive to learning and changing, so yes, I expect him to have some surprises. The question becomes, will it be enough?â
âWeâll find out shortly.â
Someone coming down the stairs got their attention and they turned to find Yukiko, Farin, Petak, and another of the Eternal Flame coming their way.
âThey wonât last,â Petak snickered. âYou fell easily to that trap.â
Yukiko and Farin didnât reply to Petak, but Yukiko gave Gregory an apologetic smile as she came closer. âJason is their last commander. Jenn and Clover are still in it.â
âTelling him wonât help them any, unless heâs going to try sneaking them a message,â Petak sneered.
âMy clan doesnât need to cheat to beat the Eternal Flame,â Gregory said with a smile. âI think weâve proven that repeatedly.â
Petak grimaced, then pushed past Yukiko and Farin. He stormed off with his clanmate following him.
âTheir clan really does hate you,â Klim said idly. âHow is the game, Farin?â
âGood, Magus. Iâll be surprised if our team doesnât win before the end of the day.â
âGood. Maybe youâll see our clan for the last match,â Klim said. âGo rest. You look like you could use a nap.â
âThank you, Magus,â Farin said.
Gregory gave Yukikoâs hand a quick squeeze as she passed him. âRest, dear one. Our wife will win for us.â
âI know she will,â Yukiko smiled. âSee you later.â
âYes.â
James stepped into the hall, then paused to let Yukiko and Farin pass. âOh, you already have your watcher. Let me get theirs. Iâll be right back.â
~*~*~
Gregory yawned, stretching as he walked beside his wives and friends. âThe last game is going to be rough. Klein had a hell of a strategy to fight Hayworth. It cost them a lot⦠I wasnât expecting Klein to call for reinforcements during the last round. Thatâll mean itâs him and another for the Shining Light in the last round.â
âWe got Ling in just before the end,â Jenn said. âThat leaves me nearly done, Clover at half, and Ling full. Jason didnât try to save any of his menâ he pushed all the buffs he could onto his men to gut us at the end.â
âThatâs how his clan is,â Yukiko said. âWe made it to the top three again. Even if we lose the last game, we did well.â
âWe did. The Eternal Flame is out of the Empireâs Gambit tournament, at least,â Clover grinned.
âShining Light and one other clan,â Ling murmured.
âIron Hand is one of them,â Gregory said. âKlim told Farin that he might face them in the last round.â
âAnd the Hardened Fist won their game earlier, so itâs those two against each other?â Yukiko half-asked. âThatâll be a brutal game.â
âConsidering the history between them, yes,â Gregory nodded. Yawning again, he shook his head. âWe have a couple of days off, at least. Farin will be over the day after tomorrow to talk strategy.â
âIâm glad we bring food with us,â Clover said. âIâd be starving, otherwise.â
Ling chuckled, nudging Clover with her hip. âYou need to slow down when you eat, as it is. You shoved that whole piece of jerky into your mouth earlier.â
Clover blushed, covering her face with her hands. âI said I was sorryâ¦â
Jenn snickered. âIt was amusing, Clover, but she is right. Slowing down would be good.â
âThere arenât many times when you should shove an entire length of meat into your mouth,â Yukiko said with a mischievous smile, her eyes on Jenn.
Now, Jennâs face heated, and she looked away from Yukiko.
Ling caught the byplay and bit her lip to stop from laughing.
âWeâll get a little more sleep than last night, but not a lot more if we want to keep to our normal schedule,â Gregory said, not wanting to touch the last conversation.
âAnd we should,â Ling said, quick to agree with Gregory. âItâll be harder for Clover and I, but itâs better for us in the long run.â
âAgreed,â Clover said, nodding. âThird bell, wake up for breakfast.â
âWe should have two or three days off before we go into the last game,â Yukiko said. âWeâll make sure we rest up before then.â
