Gregory woke with a happy sigh, the memory of his time with his wives while Darkness watched still fresh in his mind. A soft snore from Jenn got him to smile down at her. Jennâs head rested under his right pectoral, her breathing tickling him slightly. Yukiko shifted with a content sound, her leg tightening on his.
âGood morning, my heart,â Gregory whispered.
Blinking as she woke up, Yukiko gave him a small smile. âTo you, as well, dearest. I see we grew two ranks again.â Her hand tapped the medallion on his chest.
Gregory looked at his medallion, not having paid attention to it before now. Nine circles were illuminated sunflower yellow. âYes, which will fuel the rumors about our growth. Next year, the clan might be flooded with novices hoping to join.â
âTheyâll weed them out during the tea ceremony,â Jenn murmured sleepily. âWe wonât be here, either. Our novice friends will have to help guide them.â
âGood morning,â Yukiko said when Jenn looked up.
âMmm, good morning, our guiding wife,â Jenn giggled.
Yukiko snickered, then leaned over to give her a kiss. âIâm happy to bring you joy. You will be our stalwart warrior, but also our pliant lover.â
âAnd he will be our heart, holding us and the others together,â Jenn added.
âYes. We will hold his heart and shower him with all the love he can stand,â Yukiko smiled.
âI will never stop you from showing me love,â Gregory said. âAnd I will listen if you say someone should join us. I have a feeling that wonât be soon, though.â
âNot soon, dearest,â Yukiko agreed. âIâm thinking past this year.â
Gregory exhaled slowly. âOkay. That makes it easier to accept.â
âDo you think our friends have grown as much as we have?â Jenn asked as she rolled out of bed.
âI want to find out,â Yukiko said as she kissed Gregoryâs chest. âCome on, dearest, either you move or I climb over you. We both know that you prefer we didnât tease you in the morning.â
Gregory reached up, catching her delicate chin between his thumb and finger, and tilted her head to meet his eyes. âCorrect.â He kissed her softly, then slipped out of bed.
Yukiko exhaled a wistful sigh before following him. âSince we werenât told about playing today, I have to assume we arenât in the first round of the tournament. I wonder how theyâre going to manage the games? If one of the class is not playing at all, and only three players per class are playing to start, is just that one person going to be the coordinator for all three games?â
âThatâll slow the game down drastically,â Jenn said. âHmm⦠that might be one of the points, though. The tournament will start slowly, but I expect it will become harder the longer a class is playing.â
âI was thinking,â Gregory said as they began to dress, âif, for example, one of you three loses, they might place one or both of you against the winner of the other team until one side or the other is gone.â
âMultiple fronts of the same battleâ¦? Hmm,â Yukiko looked distant. âWe need to talk to the others. We have to decide which three of us will play. Also, I want to use scouts quickly at the start. I have a suspicion about what weâll be seeing.â
âExpanded front?â Jenn asked.
âWeâll talk with the others, but yes,â Yukiko nodded.
Third bell chimed as they finished dressing.
Clover and Ling were just about to the stairs when the trio met them at the landing. âWe grew, we grew, we grew!â Clover chanted when she saw them. She broke into one of her silly dances with a wide grin on her face.
âTwo ranks,â Ling said, watching her friend with amusement. âWeâre at the fourth rank now.â She pulled out her medallion, showing off the glowing, sunflower yellow circles.
âWe ranked up, too,â Jenn said, showing them her medallion.
âAwwâ¦â Cloverâs excitement faded slightly. âWeâd hoped weâd started to catch up.â
âYou will in time. The ranks are supposed to be harder to gain as we advance,â Yukiko said, looking a little distracted as she said it.
âThatâs supposed to be true,â Ling said slowly, âbut since weâve known you, weâve grown faster. We match the majority of our class now and outrank the clanless.â
Gregory said, âBut you know why we grow faster.â
Ling bowed her head. âWe follow Aetherâs Path. I will follow as you lead. It feels right.â
âDo you think the others gained two ranks?â Clover asked suddenly.
âWe should go see,â Jenn said.
They found the novices coming their way when they made it to the next floor.
Daciana rushed forward with her medallion out. âNinth rank.â
âTwo ranks for you, too,â Nessa said, seeing Jennâs medallion, which was still outside her clothes. âAnd you, as well.â She smiled at Clover.
âWe all grow so strong!â Clover beamed.
âIndeed. Our young magi will be the talk of the academy again,â Dia said. âAre you going to breakfast?â
âYes, Dia,â Yukiko said, motioning the others to start moving. âWe just paused to greet each other.â
âAh, very well. I, myself, am quite hungry, as Aether smiled upon me last night.â She slipped her own medallion out. Nine cyan circles were glowing on her medallion. âLightshield left me some alchemical aides that helped push me over the edge last night.â
âCongratulations, Dia,â Gregory said a second before the others echoed him.
âThank you,â Dia smiled. âLet us go share our joy with the others.â
When they made it to the dining room, they found Bishop already there, smiling broadly. âNovices, Apprentices, Dia,â she greeted them as her smile grew. âI was fortunate last nightâ¦â She trailed off when she caught sight of all their medallions, including Diaâs. âAh, I see you all grew as well.â She pulled her own medallion, illuminated with six bright, cyan circles.
âSo much younger than me, and yet not that far behind,â Dia said. âYou were always fast in your growth, but as you can see, our current students are growing even faster.â
âYes,â Bishop said, her eyes showing true happiness. âYou will have your work cut out for you in the coming year and beyond, Dia.â
Dia bowed her head. âYes. It will be challenging, but rewarding.â
âBreakfast will be ready shortly,â Ravol said from the kitchen.
âWe donât have a tournament game today, do we, Dia?â Gregory asked.
âNo, which means you will be training today.â
âCan we ask that Farin be brought over so we can discuss tactics with him?â Jenn asked. âWe have to decide which of the three of us will be the first players for our class group.â
âA good idea,â Bishop said. âBuilding strong alliances is always good.â
Dia nodded. âIt is, indeed.â
âIâll go after breakfast, but he might decline,â Bishop said.
âUnderstood, Bishop,â Gregory said.
âI think heâll be willing,â Yukiko said. âHeâs as focused on winning as we are.â
âHe is,â Clover nodded.
âWe will see,â Bishop said.
âBreakfast,â Ravol smiled as he pushed the cart to the table.
~*~*~
Coming back to the clan hall after the archive, the apprentices smiled and waved at Farin sitting on the porch. Farin bowed to Dia, then stood and waved back to them.
âThank you for inviting me to your clan hall,â Farin said when they were close enough to talk. âI must ask, do you mind if I share the basic tactics we discuss with my clan?â
âNo, as long as itâs nothing specific,â Gregory said. âIâd rather have the Iron Hand go to the tournament than some of the other clans.â
The others agreed with Gregory.
âThank you,â Farin exhaled. âIâd also like them to be there.â
âWe were going to use the war room,â Jenn said. âThis way.â
Once they were inside the war room, Yukiko spoke up, âWe need to decide which of us will be in play first. On top of that, I believe our individual games will combine into a joint battlefield.â
Farin frowned. âBut Egil said we wouldnât be on the same boardâ¦â Trailing off, he considered things.
âConnected boards,â Ling said suddenly. âOh⦠I can see that. Pigeons to scout for the others?â
âI knew sheâd get it,â Jenn grinned.
Cloverâs eyes widened and she nodded. âOh, I get it! If we send messages to each other, we can help or even combine onto a single board. Then, we walk over the single opposing magi, then turn and do the same to the others.â
âUnless they do the same thing. This might also be wrong,â Gregory said. âThis is speculation, but investing in pigeons and sending them out should be a low-cost investment at the start.â
âIt would explain why weâre being separated into different rooms,â Clover said. âMost will think itâs one-on-one matches for the first round, at least.â
âUnless Iâm wrong, then you winning just means you have to face the winner of the other team if one of your allies loses,â Yukiko said.
âMost will want to play a little more defensively at the beginning, since your army is what you keep moving forward,â Farin said. âI like the idea of pigeons to check for allies at the start, if they donât cost too much. If they cost as much as normal messengers, Iâd opt for the light horse messenger.â
âThatâs a good point,â Jenn agreed.
âHow do we pick who plays in the first round?â Clover asked.
âMost will expect us to field three of our clan,â Yukiko said. âWe should opt for the best combination of magi we have.â
Clover and Ling agreed, even if they looked disappointed.
âBut we should see about getting the others into the game as quickly as we can, too. Might not be the first game, but if the army and pay chest carry over, it would be easier to get them in, then,â Gregory said.
âAgreed,â Farin said. âIf it does become a combined fight, the more magi we have, the better. We donât need to place first, either, just in the top three.â
âI expect Egil to throw another twist or two into the tournament,â Gregory said. âSo donât overcommit, but make sure to bring enough force to bear.â
âOkay, so weâre agreed on who and the idea of looking for each other?â Clover asked to make sure.
When they nodded, Ling spoke up, âOkay, starting tacticsâ we should discuss what each of you is likely to do given each terrain type.â
