âI forgot to tell you,â Gregory said as they walked to the archive, âthat during meditation, I was able to get my aether to show me the last Empireâs Gambit game.â
Yukiko looked thoughtful as she considered the implications.
âEvery turn?â Clover asked.
âFrom start to finish,â Gregory said. âI even had it slow down so I could think about each move and what else might have come with each choice.â
âWhich should have taken hours,â Ling said.
âYes, but during meditation, time can compress or extend,â Jenn said. âWhen you get to the cavern, youâll understand.â
âDo you think we can do it?â Nessa asked.
âYou should try with Magi Squares, first,â Yukiko told her.
âThatâs what weâve been doing,â Jenn nodded.
âThatâs all three in oneâ¦â Clover whispered with wide eyes.
âIt is,â Daciana grinned. âWeâll be the best because of how we train.â
âWe didnât do it until after the solstice,â Gregory said, âbut you might be able to. Try it and see. Itâs not dangerous. The worst that happens is that youâre pulled from the meditation. All you have to do is just recenter and try again.â
âWe will,â Victoria smiled.
âWe have to see the cavern first,â Ling exhaled.
âItâll be soon,â Clover said.
Ling gave her friend a head shake, but she was smiling. âI hope it will be, too.â
Gregory saw a novice standing near the doors of the archive. The others all saw him moments later, their curiosity rising.
Kyle Walun straightened upon seeing them. His surprise was clear as he watched them come closer. âAh, Aetherâs Guard. I didnât think all of you came to the archive in the morning.â
âLearning is never wasted,â Yukiko said. âAre you waiting for someone?â
Walunâs eyes clearly went to Daciana before darting away. âAh, Iâ¦â
âWhat?â Daciana asked, having seen him look straight at her. âDid you come to challenge me? Is it because of the tournament?â
âYes⦠wait, noâ¦! Butâ¦â Walunâs tongue clearly got tied as he tried to answer and failed.
Seeing Walun growing embarrassed, Gregory stepped forward. âLadies, why donât you go on ahead? Iâll see if I canât help him untangle his words.â
Walunâs flushed face was obvious, and now he was looking well away from the group.
âHmm, yes,â Yukiko said. âWeâll see you shortly, dear one.â
When the others had all gone inside, Gregory gave Walun a shrug. âTake a deep breath and try again when you can.â
Walun turned away, clearly trying to regain his ability to speak without making a mess of it. After several seconds, he turned back to Gregory. âI thought that Lyall came alone.â
Gregoryâs eyebrow went up and he squared his shoulders. âSo you did come to challenge her?â
âNo!â Walun nearly shouted, and his face flushed again.
âWas it because of the tournament?â
âYesâ¦â Walun exhaled slowly. âI think I made a mistake. Iâm sorry.â
âHang on,â Gregory said. âYou didnât fight to hurt people. I remember your fights.â
âI only did what I had to. Hurting the others isnât what weâre supposed to do⦠we just need to win.â
âWhen Shun called out to you before your fight with Dacianaââ
âI hate him,â Walun cut Gregory off, the revulsion on his face was clear. âIâm glad that my family distanced itself from his.â
âYouâre related?â Gregory asked.
âMy great-grandmother is from the Shun family. She didnât have magic and was married to a merchant to make the family a profitable relationship. I was the first of my family to be a magi, but it obviously comes from her line.â
âBecause itâs fire,â Gregory said. âBut⦠Iâve heard,â he quickly hedged what he was about to say, ânot all magic comes from the motherâs line. Sometimes, itâs just what your soul yearns for.â
Walunâs lips pursed and he looked thoughtful. âI wanted to burn away all my attachments to⦠well, that didnât work, as Iâm clearly a fire magi.â
âBut you use it differently,â Gregory said. âFire touch instead of balls of fire. You used that to make people submit. You never went for the worst you could have⦠never grabbed the head or neck.â
âShun does that, and worse,â Walun said tightly.
âNot being like them just makes me like you more,â Gregory chuckled. âSo tell me, why did you come for my friend?â
Walun swallowed then met Gregoryâs eyes. âIs she seeing anyone?â
Gregory blinked slowly for a moment, then grinned. âNot that I know of, but knowing what a woman is doing is something even foresight has trouble with.â
A smile tugged at Walunâs lips. âMy father said something similar, about how a womanâs mind is a mystery to even the gods.â
âWait⦠you arenât just interested in her to spite Shun, are you?â Gregory asked suddenly, glaring at Walun when he asked.
âNo,â Walun said quickly. He coughed and looked away. âSheâs justâ¦â He exhaled a rough breath. âI should go.â
âOr you can join us for today,â Gregory said, mellowing when he understood what Walun couldnât say. âWeâll see how they feel about you being at the table. Your clan might not approve of your interest. You know that, right?â
Walun rubbed his hands on his kimono. âThey might not⦠I just wanted to find out if I have even the remotest chance.â
âSheâs dedicated to the clan,â Gregory cautioned the younger man. âBe aware of that.â
Walun nodded, taking a deep breath and giving Gregory a shaky smile. âThank you.â
The two men entered the archive and were greeted by Rafiq. âNovice, Apprentice, good morning to you both.â
âMorning, Rafiq,â Gregory said. âIâm fine with the book Iâve been reading.â
Walun took a slow breath. âArchivist, is the book I was reading still available?â
âYes. I can have it brought to you,â Rafiq told Walun.
âHeâll be with us this morning,â Gregory said.
âHmm⦠itâs not often that two clans study together,â Rafiq said.
Walunâs smile became stressed. âWeâre not studying as clansâ¦â
Rafiq nodded slowly. âI see. The books will be prepared. Good studying to you both.â
âThank you,â Gregory smiled, then nudged Walun. âCome on, theyâre this way.â
Yukiko was the first one to look up, and her head tilted slightly upon seeing Walun with Gregory. âDear one, do we have a guest?â
Walun swallowed under the curious gazes of seven women.
âHeâll join us for today, if no one objects,â Gregory said.
âHe didnât come to challenge me?â Daciana asked, giving Walun a piercing stare.
âNo,â Walun said quickly.
âHmm, but you listened to Shunâ¦â Daciana nearly growled.
âNo,â Walun said firmly, a hint of anger to his own voice.
âWait,â Gregory said, stepping in. âWalun doesnât like Shun.â
âBut during the fight, he listened to him,â Daciana said tightly.
Walun exhaled. âNo. I almost walked backward just to spite the ass, but we had to fight regardless of what we wanted.â His cheeks heated and he looked away from Daciana. âYou fought well.â
âYou wanted me to introduce you,â Nessa said suddenly. âThatâs what you tried to ask me before our fight.â
âYeahâ¦â Walun admitted, his face heating again. He snorted softly and looked up. âYou both beat me. My clan was disappointed that I lost. You two shook up everyone with how well you did. I knew you two could fight⦠I watched during training, but I had no idea what you could do with your magics.â
âSit,â Victoria said softly. âAt least stay and talk with us.â
âAfter Magi Squares,â Yukiko said. âWhen we break away, you can all chat.â
Gregory took his seat. âHave you done Magi Squares, Walun?â
âYes, Iâve been using them forâ¦â Walun trailed off when he saw the paper Gregory suddenly had in front of him. âWhat is that?â
âItâs advanced,â Gregory chuckled. He pointed to the page before Daciana. âThatâs what theyâre currently doing.â
Walun looked at Dacianaâs paper and nodded. âYes, those.â
âI have an extra,â Nessa said, sliding a blank grid to Walun. âMake one. We pass them to the left today.â
Walun blinked, then looked around the table. The only three that had the advanced puzzles were Gregory, Yukiko, and Jenn. âOkay. Thank you for inviting me to study with you.â
âYouâll be welcomed back, if they invite you,â Gregory told him. âIf your clan objects, weâll ask you to stop. We already have trouble with the Eternal Flame, so we donât want to anger Swift Wind, too.â
Walun nodded, pulling ink and pen from his belt pouch. âI understand.â
~*~*~
Gregory was surprised that Walun wasnât with the novices as they left the archive. âDid something happen?â
âNo,â Nessa said. âHe had to meet his clanmates for breakfast.â
âWas he respectful?â Ling asked.
âVery,â Victoria said, âeven if he did constantly sneak looks at Daciana.â
âI donât like him that way,â Daciana said firmly. âI have my mind made up on who my mate will be.â
âWeâll be finding a way to break the news to him,â Nessa said quickly to change the topic.
âWeâd like to keep his clan as allies,â Yukiko said.
âWe think we have a way around that,â Victoria said, âthough it might get trickier for the long term.â
âWe need to head to class,â Daciana said quickly, walking off in haste.
âLater,â Nessa told Yukiko as she jogged after her friend.
âDuring the bath,â Victoria added before she also followed them.
âI guess that would be girl talk,â Gregory said. âHe told me he was interested, but I didnât know what to say. I had no idea if Daciana had someone sheâs interested in or not.â
âShe does,â Jenn said. âWe should start walking, though. We want the table well away from Nick.â
âWeâll figure it out, dear one,â Yukiko told him.
Clover and Ling watched the othersâ they stayed quiet, but clearly had been listening. Seeing that the other two wanted to change the subject, Ling asked, âHow do you think the game will go?â
âGin and Egil will have a plan as Krogga. The question will be if Paul can mesh with them or if theyâll have trouble between them,â Yukiko replied.
âPaul will be fine,â Clover interjected. âHeâs always studying, right? Heâs very knowledgeable, too. He was always ready to help Egil before they separated us into classes. They also had a chance to talk strategy after class yesterday.â
âI think theyâll win,â Jenn nodded. âI wonder how bad theyâll make the Eternal Flame look?â
âWind, fire, and physical for their magiâ¦â Gregory said. âItâs possible Ashon and the other one combine for a fire storm effect. Thatâll hurt even Kroggaâs army.â
âBut it would take all of their aether and keep them out of it for a long time,â Clover countered.
âWeâll find out,â Ling smiled. âI look forward to this. Iâm going to be taking many notes.â
âWe can compare them during our morning study session,â Yukiko said. âComparing what we each saw or suspected will be helpful.â
âSounds good to me,â Gregory agreed.
âPettit!â Hayworth called out as the group got closer to the tacticsâ hall.
âHayworth,â Gregory greeted the Swift Wind apprentice.
âA question,â Hayworth said. âIâve heard theyâll be keeping you from the tournament. Is that true?â
âYes. Thereâs thought that if I win, there would be doubt if I used foresight at all.â Gregory shrugged. âItâs fine. Iâm not upset, and I understand the reasoning.â
âA pity,â Hayworth sighed. âIâd been hoping to see what you could do.â
âMaybe weâll have a game in the future,â Gregory said. âI had no idea you wanted to play against me.â
âYouâve made me reevaluate my position on some subjects. I wanted to see if you were skilled with command, as well.â
âHe is,â Yukiko said. âHe wins and loses equally to us, and you might get to face us.â
Hayworth looked at the women and his lips twitched. âYes. Strangely, Iâll look forward to it. How different things can be in just two years⦠If we donât face each other, Iâll be looking forward to seeing your games during the Buldoun event.â
Jenn laughed. âWeâll be there. Best of luck for your team.â
Hayworth bowed his head. âShall we?â He motioned to the door.
âOf course.â
As they entered the hall, someone was waiting for them. âExcuse me, Apprentices,â Harrison said. âHayworth, join your table. I need to speak with them.â
Hayworth hesitated, then walked off.
âHow can we help you, Magus?â Ling asked.
Harrison was silent for a handful of seconds before he exhaled. âWill you deliver a message to Bishop for me?â
âOf course,â Yukiko replied. âVerbal or written?â
Harrison pulled out a sealed scroll case. âFor her hand alone.â
Seeing his bare hand touching the case and nothing wet on it, Yukiko took it. She touched it to her obi, letting it vanish. âIâll give it to her when I see her next, Magus.â
Harrison exhaled slowly, then he bowed his head a fraction. âMy thanks.â
âOur pleasure, sir,â Gregory said.
Harrison walked toward his clan, and the group went toward the table theyâd used before. Gregory wondered what Harrison had written, but sighed, knowing that heâd likely never know.
