âHow are you today?â Gregory asked Ling and Clover as they made their way downstairs.
âMuch better,â Ling replied.
âI feel awake,â Clover grinned.
âThatâs good,â Daciana said, coming down the hall toward the stairs. âYou look better today.â
âThat didnât sound nice,â Nessa said.
Daciana lowered her head. âI didnât meanââ
Clover hugged her, cutting off the wolf eurtik. âItâs fine. Thank you.â
âTwo huggers,â Victoria chuckled.
âClover, you should ask before hugging people,â Yukiko said with humor.
âOh, right,â Clover said, letting Daciana go. âSorry. Canâ?â
Daciana grabbed Clover, hugging her back. âYes.â
Jenn snorted a laugh. âVery alike.â
Clover and Daciana hugged in a wobbly circle for a moment, earning smiles from everyone.
âNovices, Apprentices,â Dia said on the stairs above them. âAre we blocking the stairs now?â
âNo, Dia,â the chorus came as they all quickly moved downstairs.
Bishop was the only one in the dining room. She looked up when they all came in. âGood morning to you all.â
They echoed back greetings to Bishop as they took their seats. Once they were settled, they greeted Velma who was in the kitchen.
âIâll have breakfast ready shortly. Do you need your snacks again?â Velma asked.
âWe donât know what today will bring,â Gregory replied. âIt might be for the best.â
âIâll get them set up while you eat.â
âPaul told us to assemble in the main tactics room today,â Yukiko said. âPerhaps weâll be hearing about the tournament? I doubt itâll be before the solstice, but we could be getting information on it today.â
âThat would be good,â Ling nodded.
âI believe that is correct,â Dia said. âGin told me that we would have you all here for training today.â
âThatâll be nice,â Clover grinned.
âAgreed,â Bishop said. âWe are going to work you hard to make up for the lighter day yesterday.â
âWeâll do our best,â Ling said.
âThat is the attitude I want to see,â Bishop replied.
âBreakfast,â Velma said, loading up the cart with food.
As Velma got their food passed out, she gave Yukiko a smile. âThank you for the gifts. We all appreciated them.â
âOh good, they arrived. I was starting to wonder if theyâd been delayed.â
âWe appreciate all you do for us,â Jenn added.
âThank you,â Velma said, bowing to them. âEnjoy.â
~*~*~
âYuki, what did you do for them?â Nessa asked as they headed to the archive.
âI had my parents pick up some things for them,â Yukiko replied. âTheyâve been very good to us since our first year, even before we joined the clan. They make the blanks for Magi Squares for us now, too, giving us even more time to study in the morning.â
âCan we help next time?â Clover asked.
âOf course,â Yukiko smiled. âAnyone who wants to contribute can.â
âAetherâs Guard, welcome back to the archive,â Rafiq greeted them.
Greeting him back, a few of them asked for new study material. Rafiq promised to have the new books brought to them and wished them a good day. Moving off to the larger table, they settled in to work on Magi Squares.
As they were finishing those, someone started to approach them. The eurtiks at the table all looked up first, their superior hearing giving them advanced warning.
Master Damon came to a stop next to the table. âPettit, can we talk?â All three Pettits gave him a smile, and he exhaled loudly. âGregory Pettit.â
âSir, if you wish to talk, please sit,â Gregory said. âMy fellow clan members know about my foresight.â
Damon looked over the table and a small frown marred his expression. âHmm⦠I see. Did they only recruit women?â
âAs far as we know, theyâre the only ones who have asked, sir,â Yukiko replied with a hint of coolness to her tone.
âI see. Very well, but it does touch upon your magic and notes youâve left for me,â Damon replied as he took a seat.
âThatâs fine, sir,â Gregory said.
âVery well.â Damon suddenly had ink, pen, and paper in front of him. âYou mentioned seeing multiple branches. Can you expound on that?â
âThe future is all branching pathways, sir,â Gregory said. âEvery action that could happen is a new path, but they all have different chances of happening.â
Damon began to write quickly.
âThe most likely paths are⦠sharperâ¦? Clearerâ¦? Iâm not sure how to explain it, but theyâre easier to tell from the less likely paths.â
âDo they have more details, or is there a fog?â Damon asked intently.
âThey all have the same detail,â Gregory said slowly. âI canât think of how to explain it, but when I look, I can see whatâs most likely from what is the least.â
Damon frowned as he nodded. âSo thereâs no indicator that you know of?â
âNo, sir. I just know.â
âThere was a rumor that a spirit path follower could stop your foresight. Is this true?â Damon was staring at Gregory when he asked the question.
âNot that I know of, sir,â Gregory said. âThough I still have trouble with foresight at times.â
âItâs not stable?â Damon asked sharply.
âIâve noticed trouble at times,â Gregory hedged. âOccasionally, the sheer number of possibilities can make it harder.â
Going back to his notes, Damon looked thoughtful. âInteresting⦠How often have you used foresight during tactics class?â
âNot once, sir,â Gregory replied.
Damonâs head snapped up and a single eyebrow rose. âNot once?â
âNo, sir. I need to improve, not use a crutch.â
Blinking slowly, Damonâs head inclined slightly. âSmart.â
Chief Archivist Sarinia came to the table. âMaster Damon, are you interrupting these students from learning?â
Damonâs face went blank for a second, then he turned to face the black panther eurtik. âOf course Iâm not, Sarinia. I am just getting clarification from Pettit about his magic.â
Gregory was surprised by Damonâs soft, respectful tone. âHe isnât. I understand his drive to learn and appreciate it.â
âVery well, Apprentice. Master Damon knows the rules of the archive. If you tell him that he is hindering your learning, he will leave you be inside these walls.â
âThank you, Chief,â Yukiko said, bowing her headâ sheâd overheard a few of the archivists use her title before. âI doubt weâll ever need to tell him, but Iâll remember.â
âVery well,â Sarinia said, bowing her head fractionally to the table. âGood learning.â
When she left, Damon exhaled slowly. âYes. I appreciate you saying that, Pettit. Your magic is one of the things I truly yearn to know the more about. The need to record it for future generations burns brightly for me.â
âIf I might ask,â Gregory started, âwhat are the other things?â
âAether and all things connected to him,â Damon said softly. âI used to hope that Lightshield would be proven right. If Aether came back, I could just ask him⦠I have so many questions.â With a deep, sad, longing-filled sigh, Damon shook his head. âSadly, that isnât to be, it seems. Even Elder Lightshield will pass without his familyâs long-held belief being seen.â
âThere is still time,â Clover said.
Damon gave her a sad smile. âElder Lightshield has less than a handful of years left. I mourn the day he does passâ he has refused to answer so many of my questions. So much knowledge will be lost with him.â
âWe sidetracked you, sir,â Gregory said. âDid you have more questions for me?â
Nodding, Damon gathered himself. âYes, thank you, Pettit. Now thenâ¦â
~*~*~
They were leaving the archive as the fifth bell began to chime.
âGreg, will you tell us more later?â Victoria asked.
Seeing the interest from the others, he gave them a nod. âNot much more I could say, but as long as you all promise to keep it between us, yes.â
All of them were quick to agree, even Jenn and Yukiko. He realized that heâd never explained how his magic worked to them either.
âIf we finish the Peaceful Fist before the evening hour,â Gregory added. âIn return, you can all tell us about yours. Maybe you donât think much about it,â he gave Daciana a smirk, making her blush and her tail to wag a little faster, âbut itâll be a way for us to learn.â
âWe should,â Yukiko said. âWeâll discuss what we do, how it feels, the things they never explained to us during class.â
âMaybe one of us will have some insights to help the others,â Ling said.
âYes,â Yukiko said.
âI agree,â Nessa said, âbut we need to get to class.â
With their goodbyes said, the two groups broke apart and went their separate ways.
âGreg,â Jenn broke the silence as they walked, âyou held back, didnât you?â
âYes.â
âWhy?â Clover asked.
âBecause anything I tell him will be copied down and placed in the archive,â Gregory said. âI wonât tell him everything.â
âBecause incomplete information gives you the chance to surprise anyone who thinks they know all you can do,â Ling nodded. âBut will you tell us?â
âIâll tell you more,â Gregory replied. âI trust those in the clan.â
âEven then, there are some secrets that we keep from our families,â Yukiko said, âas we told you the first day you joined the clan. It isnât because we donât trust you or them, but because the secret is worth that much.â
âThatâs fine,â Clover said. âWeâll be worthy of the secret in time if we do what we need to, right?â
Yukiko and Jenn exchanged a subtle glance, and Yukiko smiled at the excitable woman. âIt is possible.â
Gregoryâs lips pursed, thinking back to why theyâd told Jenn his secret and what Yukiko was agreeing to now. Shaking his head, he sighed to himself. No, she just means that, in time, Iâll have to declare myself as Aether reborn. Not that theyâll be like Jenn⦠thatâs just that desire resonance influencing me.
The tactics building was getting closer and Ling spoke up, âWeâll be doing our best. We would have anyway. For the clan.â The last three words seemed to be rushed, tacked onto what sheâd been saying.
âThe clan has taken every tournament since last year,â Yukiko said. âHopefully today, weâll hear about the one coming up and we can keep our streak intact.â
âWe need to make sure everyone understands that Aetherâs Guard is strong and climbing back to where it belongs,â Jenn said. âThe others will do their best to tear us down during this tournamentâ weâll need to keep that in mind as we play. Egil called it a campaign tournament at the start of the year⦠which makes me think that weâll be left with what we had when we won the last game. Weâll be finding out shortly, if that is true or not.â
âWe will indeed,â Gregory nodded.
