Ability to Trust

Ability to Trust498 words~3 min read

"Here I am," I trembled as I looked up at my high school building.

"Why did I even decide to come here?" I complained to myself as I squeezed my eyes.

"Eva?" A familiar voice echoed, making a hidden box of memories from my head fall into my throat, which made it difficult for me to speak.

I opened one of my eyelids, to make sure that I was dreaming.

I wasn't.

"How- how are you? I didn't expect to see you here." Xander asked as his gaze pierced straight into my eyes which made the earlier box that choked my throat fall into my stomach making it churn.

"I'm great!" I replied, as the box of memories opened and brought back those feelings.

I had tried my best to keep that box closed for 5 years!

He looked towards the building and back at me, "Why are you here anyway? You didn't have any friends in high school, so- who do you even want to have a reunion with?"

"My best friend, I'm here for her. I haven't met her since graduation day, as she went to Finland for studies and so we lost contact. So, I just want to have a reunion with - her." I spoke aloud as I composed myself confidently.

"And me? You are still as insensitive as ever!" He jerked his head towards the ground as he almost dug a hole in there with his piercing glare.

He says that when he was the reason for everything!

He looked back at me as he yelled, "At least, a girl with some pride would hesitate to come at an event where she might meet..."

"Stop!" I countered angrily, "I must leave, or else- I might punch your face and that could ruin my nail art!" I struggled a smirk and swirled to walk away.

After all that he did- he's still insulting me?

I still remembered that day- the graduation day-when my then best friend had told me that he had been betraying me the entire high school and that he had dated me only so that I could help him with his studies.

That was believable- after all, why did the most popular boy of the school date me-a nerdy girl?

So, I had decided not to contact him for some time after that, hoping that he'll come and try to find the reason for my being upset. But he never called me- making me sure that he was just a cheater!

Yes- we never officially told each other that we've broken up, but we never met after that day either.

"Hii Sweetheart!" the voice alarmed me as I immediately swirled around to find Octavia hugging Xander.

"Here's your best friend and my-girlfriend," he smiled, "When you cheated on me, she was the one who comforted me."

Her mouth opened and her eyes went round simultaneously.

"Ex-best friend," I corrected.

I always had the ability to trust

- but the wrong person.
