Valarie didnât wait for Nyla to respond and rushed out as if something were chasing her.
With Valarieâs departure, the living room fell into silence.
Nyla lowered her gaze for a moment, hesitating before finally looking up at Damon.
To her surprise, he was also looking at her. Their eyes met, but neither spoke.
Eventually, it was Nyla who broke the silence.
âMr. Sumner, Iâm really sorry about what happened before. Iâll compensate for the losses caused to Prospectus Technology. I have only one requestâplease donât hide Buddy from me,â Nyla pleaded.
âI promise I wonât. I also wonât use Buddy to threaten you anymore. If you donât want to live here, you can take him and move out. But you canât go back to Capitarnia right now,â Damon replied.
If Nyla took Mason back to Capitarnia, he couldnât guarantee that Richard wouldnât try to kidnap Mason again. Keeping them in Saintornia was the only way he could protect them.
Nyla was taken aback, staring at Damon in disbelief.
Did she hear him wrong? Damon actually agreed to her request and even suggested she move out with Mason? How could he suddenly be so agreeable?
âMr. Sumner⦠are you serious?â she asked.
Seeing the doubt in Nylaâs eyes, Damon replied earnestly,
Yes, itâs true. I was wrong before. I didnât protect you and Buddy properly. I wonât force you to do anything anymore, but you canât stop me from seeing Buddy.â
After talking to Spencer earlier and gaining a clearer understanding of his past with Nyla, Damon realized how outrageous his previous behavior had been. He thought he was justified in believing that Nyla had secretly given birth to his child. Yet, if he hadnât pursued her back then, she wouldnât have fallen into the sea while pregnant and wouldnât have had to give birth alone.
He had no right to blame her or take Mason away from her.
Several seconds passed as Nyla processed what Damon had just said.
âCan I really take Buddy and she asked again.
Damon confirmed, âYes, but for now.
you still canât leave Saintornia.â
Nyla worried he might change his mind the next day, so she said, âThen, Iâll pack out tonight.â
my things now and move
Damonâs gaze darkened slightly while watching her anxious demeanor. It was clear that his earlier concerns had been unfoundedâshe felt no attachment to him now.
Given the chance to leave, she would do so without hesitation.
âNo need to rush,â he replied. âI have a business trip tonight and wonât be back for a week. Plus, you havenât found a new place yet.â

Nyla hesitated. She wanted to refuse but feared provoking Damon into changing his mind. âOkay, then Iâll
leave tomorrow.â
Damon gave her a pointed look before turning to go back to his study, only emerging when it was time for dinner.
Dinner was rather quiet.
Damon was already a man of few words, and Nyla was preoccupied with thoughts about where she and Mason would live after leaving the villa.
Strangely enough, she felt a twinge of reluctance to leave, despite having disliked this place before.
âMommy, youâre going to eat your food through your nose,â Mason complained.
Masonâs voice brought Nyla back to reality. She blinked and noticed that both Damon and Mason were looking at her, their puzzled expressions remarkably similar.
Nyla averted her gaze, feeling a bit embarrassed as she laughed awkwardly. âSorry, Buddy. I was just lost in thoughtâ¦â
After dinner, as Nyla planned to take Mason for a walk, Damon suddenly asked her to come to the study.
