Chapter 597
Nyla glanced at Damon, her eyes blazing with anger. âDamon, youâre such a jerk!â
âFifty seconds left,â Damon replied, his tone flat
His expression was cold, and the icy glint in his eyes sent chills through her.
âFine, I agree,â Nyla finally conceded.
She was resoluteâshe couldnât bear the thought of losing Mason again.
Damon didnât seem surprised by her surrender. He answered coldly, âHeâs in Room 302.â
Without looking back, Nyla hurried down the hall.
When she reached the door, she stopped abruptly, taking a deep breath. Her hand trembled as she grasped the doorknob, slowly pushing the door open.
Even though she had tried to prepare herself, the sight of Mason hit her harder than expected. Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
In just a few days, he had lost weight, his face pale and gaunt. He looked utterly defeated.
âBuddyâ¦â Nylaâs voice broke, tears spilling over.
Mason turned his head, disbelief flickering across his face. As soon as he saw her, the dullness in his eyes vanished, replaced by a spark of life.
âMommy!â he cried, leaping off the bed and rushing into her arms.
Nyla crouched quickly, catching him in a tight embrace. âMommyâs here. Donât be scared. I wonât leave you again. No oneâs going to take you away.â
As Mason buried his face into her shoulder, the familiar scent of gardenias enveloped him, and his tears flowed freely.
âI missed you so much, Mommy,â he sobbed.
âI missed you too,â Nyla whispered, gently rubbing his back. âBut no more tears now, okay?â
She soothed him until his sobs turned to quiet sniffles.
âMommy, are you taking me home? I donât want to stay here. I want to go home⦠Masonâs voice wavered.
Nyla paused, her hand stilling as she wiped his tearâstreaked face.
After a moment, she answered softly, âWe canât go home just yet, sweetie. Youâre still sick and need to stay here until you get better. But once youâre well, weâll go home.â
âBut I donât want to stay here! I hate that mean daddy! I donât want him to be my dad!â Mason complained,
âOkay, okay, we wonât let him be your dad. But you need to get better first. Also, you have to promise Mommy that you wonât do anything so dangerous again. Hearing you jumped from the second floor nearly gave me a heart attack!â Nyla said, her voice strained with concern.
As she spoke, she picked Mason up and gently placed him back on the bed.

âThatâs only because that mean dad wouldnât let me see you and locked me up!â Mason exclaimed, frustration evident in his voice.
Nyla frowned. âBut that doesnât mean you can hurt yourself to get what you want. Have you forgotten what I taught you?â
Feeling a pang of guilt, Mason lowered his head and mumbled, âNo matter the situation, the most important thing is to protect myself.â
âSince you remember, why would you do something like this?â Nyla asked softly, her expression a mixture of worry and sadness.
Mason pouted, his voice weak. âBecause I wanted to see you, and I didnât want to be separated from youâ¦

As the tears Mason had been holding back finally spilled over, Nylaâs heart softened.
âAlright, letâs not talk about that anymore. I promise I wonât leave you again, okay?â she said gently.
Mason nodded, sniffling. âMm.â
Just then, the door to the hospital ward opened, and Luca walked in, carrying a food container.
âMs. Kinsey, this is from Mr. Sumner. Mr. Mason hasnât eaten in several days,â he said as he approached. Nyla reached out to take it. âThank you.â
âOf course. Iâll be right outside, so call me if you need anything,â Luca replied before exiting the room. After Luca left, Nyla placed the food container on the table beside the bed. She opened it and set the meal in front of Mason.
Seeing the simple vegetable soup and a few side dishes, disappointment flickered across Masonâs face. He looked up at Nyla and pleaded, âMommy, I want a fried drumstickâ¦â
âWe canât have that right now. You need to eat light while youâre in the hospital. Once youâre discharged, Iâll make it for you, okay?â Nyla coaxed him with a reassuring smile.
