Chapter 197
Damonâs gaze turned icy as if he could kill with a stare.
Phoebe felt a pang of guilt under his harsh scrutiny. However, as she gazed at her daughter in the ICU, uncertain of her fate, her anger reignited.
âMr. Sumner, Iâm not afraid of you. After all, my daughter is in this state. What do I have to lose?â she stated boldly.
Nyla stepped forward, looking up at Damon. âUncle Damon, itâs natural for Mrs. Weir to be upset. Sheâs Valarieâs mother. Iâm fine.â
Jonathan sighed and turned to Nyla. âMs. Jayston, you should go home for now. Iâll let you know if Valarie improves.â
Although Nyla longed to stay, she realized her presence would only add to the tension.
âOkay,â she agreed.
Nyla took one last glance at Valarie through the glass, took a deep breath, and turned to leave. Instead of going home, she found a quiet bench in the hospital lobby.
âUncle Damon, you should go back now,â she suggested.
Damon stood firm. âAnd you?â
âIâm staying here tonight. I wonât be able to sleep at home anyway.â Nyla replied.
Staying there would ensure she would be immediately informed of any change in Valarieâs condition.
âIâll have someone watch over things and notify you immediately if Valarie wakes up. But staying here. wonât help. Come back with me,â Damon insisted.
Nyla shook her head. âUncle Damon, itâs okay. Youâve already done so much for me tonight. I-â Before she could finish, Damon unexpectedly bent down and scooped her up.
Startled, Nyla instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck
As he carried her toward the hospital exit, she protested, âUncle Damon, put me down. Even if you take me back, Iâll just come back here later.â
Damon remained silent, his expression grim as he strode forward.
Nylaâs frustration grew as he wasnât listening. âUncle Damon, put me down! I said I donât want to go back!â
Damon looked down at her, his eyes cold. âStaying here is just wasting time. The most important thing now is to get some rest and figure out who did this to Valarie, not to uselessly wait around!â
Nyla tightened her grip around his neck. After a few seconds, she spoke quietly. âPut me down. I can walk.

Damon was right. Besides waiting for Valarie to wake up, she needed to find out who was responsible for
this.

Seeing that Nyla understood, Damon didnât say anything more or put her down. He quickly walked to the curb and placed her into the car.
âDrive,â he ordered.
Half an hour later, the car stopped in front of a large, standalone villa.
Nyla frowned. âWhere is this?â
âMy place,â Damon answered.
Her expression changed. âUncle Damon, please have the driver take me home.â
âYou can either stay here tonight or find your own way back. Itâs up to you,â Damon said, getting out of the car and walking toward the villa.
Seeing the villa surrounded by darkness, with occasional mysterious noises, Nyla hesitated but eventually followed Damon inside.
The villa was decorated in a minimalist black, white, and gray scheme. It was devoid of any bright colors or warmth, giving it a cold and unwelcoming feelâmuch like Damon himself.
Damon took a bottle of water from the fridge and sipped it. He frowned when he noticed Nyla still standing by the door.
âThe slippers are in the cabinet by the door. Youâll stay in the second room on the left side of the second floor,â he informed her, then turned and headed toward his study.
Seeing him about to leave, Nyla snapped back to reality. She quickly changed into slippers and rushed to block his path. âUncle Damon, have you found out how Valarie fell from the building? What did you discover?â
