Chapter Fourteen-"I'm kind of wishing that you kissed me first right now"

It felt like I was trapped inside my own mind, unable to move while everything around me shifted in and out of focus while my eyes were staring solely on the horror in front of me. You know if you told me a few weeks ago that I’d be standing in a carnival, shivering my butt off while watching probably two of the hottest guys in Redwood fighting like a bunch of apes, I wouldn’t have believed you. But now that it was actually happening, I had to pinch myself to make sure that I wasn’t dreaming.

Sean Gregory who was notorious for being a bad boy and going through girls like an alcoholic going through vodka and up until now, the whole ‘British bad boy’ thing hadn’t clicked in mainly because Sean hadn’t done anything that bad around me but now I was starting to realise why people whispered about him in the hallways when he skipped class. Yes, Sean Gregory, the guy with black hair and wore combat boots was beating the brains out of my boyfriend Dave Peterson on the carnival floor and I was just standing there like a fool, watching in shock.

I never expected that it would happen like this, or that I even predicted that this fight would happen at all. Yeah so maybe I figured Dave would find out about me kissing Sean at the lake house, but I didn’t for it to happen this way. Sean and Dave were struggling on the ground and I noticed that a few people were now stopping to stare. Great Viv, this is your fault! If you had just declined Sean’s jacket and gotten along with your life then Dave wouldn’t be punching Sean over his head.

Sean suddenly stood up, wiping away at the blood which was now trickling down his nose while Dave stood as well. For a moment, both guys stared at each other and it was clear that there was a silent hatred between them. Then, without warning, Dave swung his arm as his fist connected with Sean’s eye, knocking Sean onto the ground with a loud thud. I felt my gut tightening and it was in that moment that I found my voice and snapped out of shock.

“DAVE STOP IT!” I yelled.

Dave froze, as if realising I was there for the first time. He turned around to glance down at me. I found his blue eyes which were usually its warm, sapphire blue now cold and dark. His lips were pulled into a tight, thin line and there was a bruise forming along his cheek. His chest heaved up and down heavily, clearly showing that he was hurt and I noticed that his hands were still balled into fists.

“He tried to take advantage of you Viv,” Dave muttered.

I turned to Sean who was now sitting up, still clutching at his hurt eye. He turned to look up at me before his lips curved up into a cold smile. I felt my chest tighten and my throat to constrict. My breathing grew shallower and tears formed in my eyes. This is it Viv. You just got the resident bad boy of Redwood High to hate you. I swallowed a sob and turned to Dave who was staring at me with a questioning look.

“I…” I trailed off, “…he wasn’t.”

Dave turned to Sean again and glared before spitting out, “He is Viv and you’re just too innocent to see that.”

“You know what?” Sean suddenly spoke, “You’re so hung up over Viv and me that you’re too blind to see your own fucking faults!”

Dave began to reply but Sean cut him off as he stood, “I’m so over this shit,” then he turned to me even as he spoke to Dave, “you can have Viv all to yourself.”

And with that, Sean stormed off into the crowds until he disappeared from my sight completely. I sucked in a shuddering breath, and realised that I was still wearing Sean’s leather jacket. I let the sleeves fall over my hands in its largeness and turned to face Dave who was glaring at the spot Sean had just retreated into. He glanced at me when he noticed that I was staring at him.

“Viv,” he spoke, “are you okay?”

I swallowed a lump, before blinking away the tears and nodded slightly as I replied, “Yeah, I’m fine. I-I think that I’ll g-go home now.”

Dave frowned as he neared me, his lips curling in disgust when his fell onto Sean’s jacket but nonetheless he took my hand in his as his blue eyes which seemed slightly calmer connected with mine.

“I’ll drive you home,” he merely stated.

Leading me through the throngs of crowds who seemed oblivious to what had just happened in front of Juliet’s family ‘dunking booth’, Dave hardly spoke a word to me. If I could cut the tension between us with a knife, I was sure that there would definitely be sparks and it wasn’t the good kind. Dave looked slightly distant, his eyes were narrowed and he wouldn’t look at me. I found myself wanting to hear his voice, even though it was just to reassure me that I wasn’t going to become the most hated person by Sean Gregory.

We reached Dave’s car which was at the end of the car-park and we both got in silently. I swallowed, feeling my mouth go dry as I realised that it was now or never that I should tell Dave about the lake house. I mean if he saw Sean kissing me now at the carnival, he can’t take the lake house thing any worse now…could he? Taking a deep breath of bravery, I turned to face Dave as he began to drive towards my home.

“Dave…” I started as I glanced at him, “look I’m sorry.”

Dave snorted, “You’ve got nothing to be sorry about,” he turned to look at me before turning his attention back onto the road, “it’s that lousy asshole that’s to blame.”

“We kissed you know at the lake house,” I suddenly spilled out.

Dave turned to me, frowning slightly but replied, “I know Viv…that’s why I punched Sean tonight, in case he tried to kiss you again.”

If Dave was pretending that he didn’t see Sean kiss me tonight then he was doing a pretty good job, because I was sure that he had said that he knew about the lake house. He did Viv! Dave just said that he knew about you and Sean at the lake house and that was why he punched Sean, but how did he find out? Wait, maybe he saw you and Sean together and put two and two together? God, you’re an idiot Viv!

“H-How did y-you-”

Dave cut me off, “Viv, I may be a guy and yeah guys aren’t known to be good with reading girls but how stupid do I look?”

I stuttered, “But no one-”

“Look, I found out from Amanda,” Dave replied, “she told me about it.”

I blanched and glanced out of the window as I responded, “But you didn’t say anything.”

“I know,” Dave breathed out, “and look I’m sorry about getting all defensive in the carnival…it’s just that, I got so angry at the way he was looking at you and holding your hands and…” he laughed humourlessly, “You seemed so happy.”

I turned to face Dave again as he pulled up onto my road, “But Sean didn’t take advantage of me.”

“He did Viv, at the lake house and it was obvious that he was going to take advantage of you again tonight,” Dave replied.

I closed my mouth and decided not to correct Dave. There was no telling what he would do if he found out about the kiss tonight between Sean and I. What if he decided that Sean was really taking advantage of me and went crazy on him at school and got himself expelled? I found myself shuddering at the thoughts of Dave finding out about the kiss tonight so much so, that I hadn’t realised that Dave had cut off the engine as we were parked in front of my house.

I turned to look at the small, one storey house with the lights in the living room filtering through the curtains. I sighed softly and turned to open the car door, unsure of what to say to Dave. As I hopped out of the warm car and into the cold frigid air, I turned to glance at Dave who was now staring at me intently. His blue eyes were shining from the porch light and for a moment, his blonde hair looked white like snow. It made me realise why I had agreed to dating Dave.

Dave was the sweetest guy in school. He was sincere and didn’t really seem to get mad except when there was a reason. He got good grades and stayed out of trouble and most of all, he was always there and reliable. I swallowed, feeling my mind wandering to Sean and shook away the feelings of hurt as I smiled slightly at Dave. Dave’s lips mimicked mine, except I was certain that his smile was a whole lot better than mine. It lit his face up, causing my shoulders to relax slightly.

“Night Viv, see at school,” he whispered.

“Goodnight,” I replied, before turning to head into my house.

I, Vivienne Lanter, am probably the stupidest girl ever to have lived. Even after the way Sean acted towards me after last night, I found myself standing outside of his mansion of a home with his leather jacket and my backpack with a bunch of Maths textbooks. I should have listened to my inner voice which screamed to me, ‘Get out while you still can’, but I didn’t. I was Vivienne Lanter and I was not going to let something as stupid as a brawl stop me from doing what I agreed to and if Sean didn’t want to see me, he still had to take back his jacket.

Mustering up my courage, I walked up to the gate and pressed on the intercom. After Lily answered and heard that it was me, she buzzed me in. For a moment as I walked up the long pathway to the front door, I felt a lot like I was royalty. Everything around me screamed money but even though it was beautiful, I was reminded again of my own home and how different it was from here. I snapped out of my thoughts when the front door opened, revealing a smiling Lily.

Her dark hair was pulled up into a messy ponytail and she wore a simple sun dress that reached her knees. She grinned at me, before stepping aside and whispering, “I’m glad you’re here to keep the cry baby company since I’ve got to head back to work for an emergency hairdo.”

I frowned, “Huh?”

Lily brushed passed me before replying, “Sean, he’s been moping ever since getting into that fight last night with some guy who he wouldn’t tell me.”

My eyes widened, as I replied, “Oh yeah…the fight…”

“You were there?” Lily questioned.

I shook my head, “Uh no…I uhm…just heard about it…”

Lily just shrugged, “Oh well, see you then. Sean’s in the lounge, it’s hard to ignore him because you can just get the bad vibes out of that room.”

I nodded before moving into the large house, finding myself again at a loss for words to describe the beautiful interior of the house. Pulling my eyes away from the large foyer, I turned towards the room where I could hear a TV on. Walking slowly, I found myself entering a dimly lit lounge. The curtains were shut and there were half eaten chips on the floor along with cans of soda. I turned my attention to the TV, which was large and mounted on the wall, showing images of some crime scene before I let my eyes fall onto the one person I knew didn’t want to see me.

Sean looked worse than I could have imagined. His eye where Dave had punched him was now slightly swollen and bruised in an unhealthy looking blue colour. His jaw looked red and his eyes were narrowed at the TV as he stuffed a few pretzels into his mouth. For a moment, I wondered if this was the right thing to do, then threw the thought away when I felt the weight of the Maths textbooks in my bag and the leather jacket hanging in my arms.

“Sean?” I called uncertainly.

Sean instantly turned to look away from the TV towards me. His eyes narrowed slightly before he spoke, “How did you get in?”

I ignored the cold tone of his voice before I entered the lounge slowly, as I replied, “Lily let me in.”

Sean’s eyes suddenly landed on my bag; “Are you serious?” he scoffed, “Tutoring me after what happened?”

I shrugged, “You don’t have to,” I replied, before pushing his jacket towards him, “I just wanted to bring this back.”

He eyed his jacket carefully then turned back to stare at me with his big blue eye and slightly swollen jaw, “You didn’t have to bring it back.”

I licked my lips nervously as I replied, “I couldn’t keep it; after all it is yours.”

“I suppose,” he answered in his slightly British accent.

Ignoring the detached way Sean was being, I continued to speak, “Look Sean, about last night-”

He cut me off, “Forget about it,” he shrugged slightly, “Dave had every right to punch me.”

I frowned, “No he didn’t.”

“Yeah he did,” Sean replied

“He didn’t have to punch you or try to kill you,” I retorted, “He could have handled the situation better.”

“Like I did when you didn’t want to kiss me anymore?” Sean asked, raising an eyebrow.

I felt my cheeks heat up slightly as the memory of kissing Sean suddenly entered my mind. Sean must have noticed because he smirked slightly, but it turned into a wince and he touched his eye gingerly. A frown took up my lips as I noticed the small bag of frozen peas on the couch next to Sean, still covered in ice and not being used. Forgetting the fact that Sean really didn’t want to speak to me, I took the frozen peas in my hand and pressed it gently against Sean’s eye.

“What are you-” Sean started but I interrupted.

“How do you expect the bruise to go if you don’t use ice on it?” I replied, “Don’t you ever obey the rules?”

Sean turned to stare at me with his good eye and scoffed like a little schoolboy who just got told that he couldn’t eat the chocolate chip cookies before dinner.

“It hurts like hell,” Sean whined, “which is why I didn’t put the ice on it.”

I rolled my eyes at him, “Stop being such a baby.”

Sean pouted, “Since when did you become so bossy?”

I glared slightly, “Since you decided to waste your life away watching NCIS.”

“Touché,” Sean replied.

I smiled in triumph before speaking, “You’re not mad or anything though, right?”

Sean shrugged, “Well it doesn’t matter now does it, seeing as how you took it upon yourself to be my personal nurse and everything,” he replied suggestively.

I felt a blush rising to my face as I replied, “Sean!”

“Sean,” he mocked with a smile.

“Why do you have to be so annoying?” I asked him, even though I sounded far from annoyed.

“Why do you have to be so off-limits?” he retorted.

“I’m not off-limits,” I murmured.

Sean slowly pulled my hand away with the ice pack and sat up, his eyes connecting with mine again. Instantly my heart rate picked up and my breathing grew quicker with anticipation. I licked my lips slightly as my eyes slowly fell onto the knowing smile that was forming on Sean’s lips. He was battered and bruised and yet he still looked like a devastatingly handsome Greek Sex God. He made my heart to beat out of rhythm and my insides to feel like jelly.

“You make it so hard,” he whispered, leaning forward.

His mouth was hardly an inch away and I could feel my eyes closing slightly. But instead of feeling Sean’s lips connecting with mine, I felt his mouth place a small closed-mouth kiss on my forehead. When I opened my eyes, I found him smiling at me, even though there was a pained expression in his eyes. I sighed, before pulling away slightly and speaking.

“I didn’t mean to you know…” I trailed off.

Sean scratched the back of his neck nervously, “I’m kind of wishing that you kissed me first right now.”

A/N So! What did you think? Yeah, it was SUPER boring I know, so sue me? I was totally zoned out and I still am, but still...did you hate it? Just dislike it? Or maybe you like it??? Tell me what you think! Remember to vote, comment and spread the word (but only if you enjoyed it).
