it was not the first time that rosaline had woken up, with a feeling somewhat similar to cement being layered over her heart.
even when she rested her elbows against the balcony's ridge and breathed in the cool dawn air basked in mediterranean sun, rosaline knew that something was wrong.
for the first time in her life, rosaline felt alone.
rosaline sighed, walked back into her apartment, and dressed in her favorite two piece, an ecru floral print with a top that wrapped around her tunic. not bothering to brush the knots that had only recently started to form in her hair, rosaline tied it back with a maroon scrunchie, before grabbing her side bag and descending the stairs out of her apartment.
she was greeted with the sweet aroma of oils and salt from the nearby sea, one she was greeted with everyday, and it was at that moment rosaline realized that she had never actually left the city, never been greeted with a foreign scent in the morning. she was sick of it.
instead of her routinely stroll to the market stalls, rosaline headed towards the docks, leaving a trail of primroses with every step.
the sun gleamed adorning the sea in sun dust and staining rosaline's fingertips when she ran her hand through it.
how long had it been since she held the hand of a gilt souled boy. rosaline already knew the answer to her question. she had counted each day until they turned to weeks, weeks to months.
looking at her reflection in the sea, rosaline tilted her head noticing how her brows arched, a crease forming between them.
she traced the letters of a name she had once been told into the turquoise waves, one that couldn't leave her head, the first thing she thought of when the sun wished her good morning, the last thing she thought of before the moon kissed her good night.
dantè.
rosaline had no idea how a single name could effect her so much, but she can still make out the slight shimmer of golden flecks on her knuckles, when he had once placed a kiss upon her hand.
she wondered where he was, if he was well, if he would ever come back.
rosaline stood from her place at the dock, a bit too hastily. she was angry at herself for thinking he would come back for her, rosaline was merely a mayflower in a field full of mayflowers, or rather she thought herself to be.
rosaline crossed her arms across her chest, the sun had fallen asleep behind the clouds, she knew it was going to rain soon so she followed a trail of primroses which strangely seemed to lead a path towards her apartment. when she arrived rosaline walked the opposite way through the street and towards the market stalls. the sound of jazz was nowhere to be heard, and rosaline wondered whether they had left too, maybe to a place with a beach. gosh, rosaline had always wanted to go to a beach, paint seashells in her hair and dig her toes into sun kissed sands.
she continued towards the market stalls, stopping when she reached a stall displaying an array of flowers of every hue. but rosaline knew exactly what she was looking for.
the rose dante had given her had shriveled into a star rosaline had placed into the twilight sky one night, for rosaline refused to go near anything that reminded her of a particular sand souled boy. today was the first day she had visited the docks since dantè had left.
rosaline brought the rose and followed her way back to her apartment. by now street lamps flickered and from a distance rosaline wouldn't be able to tell if they were fireflies. she reached her apartment as soon as the sun woke from its slumber, staining the sky magenta and the colour of splattered grapefruit. rosaline changed into a pink silk gown (similar to the sky), and placed the rose in a jug of spring water on her bedside table.
before rosaline rested her head amongst the clouds, she heard it. a faint tapping on her apartment door, rosaline never had visitors, yet alone at a time like this. as she made her way down the stairs, she could feel a faint warmth vibrating from her fingertips to her toes. by the time she had made her way to the bottom of the stairs, her eyes were blinded by an intense glow, similar to the one she had mistaken the street lights as fireflies to. rosaline swung open the door, feeling the rain wet against her skin, soaking her hair and gown in lychee sap. the stars in rosalines throat were hard to swallow, but she managed to, rubbing her eyes for she didn't know whether she was dreaming.
there, soaked in the rain, grinning goofily was no other than the golden souled boy rosaline couldn't stop thinking about. without wasting another second, rosaline ran towards dantè embracing him in a hug that couldn't seem to be any tighter.
'it's nice to know you missed me but, i'd appreciate it if you wouldn't add to the soaked state i'm already in'
'oh right, sorry'
rosaline lifted her head and began to release herself from dantè. before she could, two firm arms grasped her, pulling her towards them. rosaline looked up to find dantè grinning, arms wrapped around her.
dantè brought his mouth towards her ear
'i thought you'd know i was kidding'
for the first time in too long rosaline felt her lips turn upwards into a smile.
'consider us even, because i haven't forgotten you pushing me into the sea'
'no i don't think so. the only way to consider us even is for me to push you into the sea again' dantè smirked and twirled a strand of rosaline's inky locks around his finger.
rosaline breathed in the strong musk scent
'i'm so glad you're back'
'me too, but i'm not here for long'
rosalines head snapped upwards.
'oh you're leaving?'
dantè looked straight into rosaline's eyes realizing the stars were nothing compared.
'tonight, yes'
rosaline didn't know what to say, or rather if she could say it. how could she tell him that she felt feelings for him that she had never felt before. the sound of jazz music enveloped the moon kissed air. rosaline couldn't make out what the jazz band were playing, but then again she never could, she just knew that she liked it.
dantè shifted beneath her
'may i have this dance, m'lady'
rosaline lifted her head to meet his eyes.
'but it's raining'
'you're right. which makes it an even better reason for you to take my hand'
rosaline couldn't help herself from smiling as she wrapped her arms around his neck, her bangles tangling with his hair, until the floor beneath was non existent and the only air left was the fast breaths that escaped each other's mouths. rosaline swirled and painted a valley of roses in the sky with her eyes, the sun sighed with her head resting on the moon's shoulder.
'come with me'
'where would we go'
'we'll figure it out'
rosaline closed the already short distance with her lips, though to her (and to him) it felt more like they were light years apart.
their lips moulded together as their souls eclipsed. the horizon split itself into two, oozing it's red wine blood which clasped the waves of the sea and mirrored the garden sky scattered in dieramas for stars.
rosaline had fireflies caught between the strands of her hair, but the passion of her lips pressed against dantè's made it seem as if she didn't even realise the rain had stopped.
rosaline removed her mouth from his only to press her forehead against his.
'when would we leave'
'the ship leaves soon'
for a moment they didn't talk, breathing with one another staring into each other's eyes as if were blind all their lives, and only now they could see.
and because rosaline had nothing left to lose, and realised that she didn't want to spend her life alone, she went back to her apartment for her things knowing that a boy with a soul the colour of sunrise was waiting for her right outside. descending the stairs, rosaline locked the door behind her, taking dantès hand and not looking back, for the sight of the setting sun and the feeling of dante's hand on hers was more than enough of a reason to keep her moving forward.
together they walked towards the deck smiling wide with milk teeth, rosaline asking if dantè knew of any places with a beach.
rosaline knew she would visit this place again one day, so as the ship left the dock, she rested her head against dantè's shoulder sighing and breathing in the dusk breeze.
- souls like ours were never supposed to cross just by coincidence.
