Chapter 7: The Calm Before the Storm (Sabine's POV)

Rogue Mate | ENG1,019 words~6 min read

The forest was quieter now. My breathing had slowed, the tension in my muscles easing, but the weight of the moment hadn't lifted. My wolf—San—pushed forward in my mind, urging me to stop hiding, to come out and face the reality that had been chasing me since the moment I first laid eyes on Owen.

I stood still, perched on the edge of the shadows, watching him from behind the cover of thick underbrush. Owen had stopped moving, his posture now relaxed. His wolf, Fraser, was in control, and it seemed that Owen had finally understood what I had been trying to do—hide, stay away, keep my distance. He wasn't chasing me anymore.

Why are you still hiding, Sabine? San's voice was a low growl in my mind, frustration and impatience thick in his words. You know he won't leave you alone. This bond, this connection—it's stronger than anything you've ever felt. It's already too late to turn back.

I clenched my fists, the sharp pang of panic rising in my chest again. San's words rang true. I had never experienced anything like this before. The way my body responded to Owen—how my heart seemed to beat faster when I thought of him, how the pull of the bond couldn't be ignored no matter how much I tried—was unlike anything I'd ever known.

But the fear... it lingered.

I can't do this, I said, my voice barely a whisper in the stillness of the woods. What if he doesn't understand? What if I can't handle it?

You'll never know unless you let him in.

San's voice softened, the growl fading into something almost sympathetic. I knew he was right. I couldn't keep running. But there was a part of me that was terrified of what would happen if I stopped. If I gave in to this bond, this pull that was growing stronger with each passing second.

I glanced through the trees, watching Owen's still form. His back was to me, and I could see the tension in his shoulders, the way his head turned slightly, as if he were listening for something. Waiting.

For me.

My heart clenched.

He's waiting for you, San said, his tone more gentle now. You don't have to be afraid of him, Sabine. You're stronger than you think. This bond? It's not a chain. It's not a prison. It's freedom.

Freedom? The word felt foreign on my tongue. How can this be freedom when I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with it?

San growled low, the sound vibrating in my chest. You won't know until you trust him. Until you trust yourself.

I hesitated, my fingers tightening into fists at my sides. A soft rustle of leaves broke the silence, and I saw Owen's head tilt slightly, as if he'd caught the sound.

His wolf, Fraser, was still so present in my mind, the pulse of his energy in the air like a static charge. My instincts were screaming at me to move, to run again, to stay hidden where it felt safe. But deeper inside, I knew—this wasn't safety. Not anymore.

I stepped forward, just enough for my scent to carry on the wind, for him to know I was there.

Owen turned slowly, his eyes locking onto mine the moment he saw me. The intensity of his gaze made my breath catch in my throat, but there was something else in it—something I couldn't name.

What are you waiting for? San whispered, his voice soft but urging. Go to him.

I moved, just a step, then another. My wolf urged me on, the bond between Owen and me pulling me closer, almost against my will. I couldn't fight it anymore.

It's time, San said quietly, his voice like a warm breeze in my mind.

With a final, shaky breath, I stepped out of the shadows and into the clearing, fully revealing myself to him. The night air felt cool against my fur, the weight of everything I had been holding back pressing on me like a heavy cloak.

Owen's eyes widened slightly as he took in the sight of me, his stance relaxed but alert, waiting. He didn't move toward me, but I could feel the bond between us—the pull that connected us, stronger now that I was standing here in front of him.

He was waiting.

For me to decide.

I took another step forward. Slowly. Cautiously.

"I'm not going to hurt you," Owen said quietly, his voice steady, low. His words weren't just for me—they were for both of us.

I swallowed hard, fighting the lump in my throat. "I didn't ask for this," I whispered, my voice barely audible.

"I know," he replied softly. "But I'm here. And I'm not leaving. Whatever you decide, whatever you need, I'll be here."

My heart raced at his words, the bond between us flaring as if it understood what my mind hadn't fully accepted yet. This wasn't something I could outrun, and it wasn't something I had to face alone.

With a trembling sigh, I let my guard down. I closed the distance between us, feeling every step like it was the hardest thing I had ever done.

And then, standing in front of him, I finally let go of the fear. I closed my eyes and let my wolf take over, feeling the world shift as I became fully present in the moment.

Owen's hand reached out slowly, gently, and when it touched my fur, the bond between us flared, a bright, glowing thread of connection that seemed to bind us in a way I could no longer ignore.

He didn't say anything. He didn't need to. The connection between us spoke louder than words ever could.

And for the first time in my life, I didn't feel alone.
