I slowly regained consciousness, the fog in my mind thick and disorienting. The world felt distant, like I was floating, untethered in an ocean of emptiness. My body ached in ways I couldn't fully process, each pulse of pain sending sharp, electric shocks through me. A weight pressed down on my chestâunfamiliar, heavy, suffocating. My head throbbed relentlessly, and the rest of me felt like it was made of stone, immovable and cold.
Blinking against the sharp light above, I struggled to focus, my eyelids dragging as if weighed down by lead. The sterile scent of antiseptic filled my senses, sharp and pungent, confirming what my hazy mind couldn't quite graspâI wasn't in the woods anymore. I wasn't in danger, at least not immediate. The metallic tang of blood, the rush of adrenaline, the bite of the rogue wolfânone of that was here. I was somewhere safe, but it felt alien, distant, disconnected from the chaos I had just escaped.
Voicesâsoft, urgentâdrifted through the fog like faint echoes in a cavern. I tried to turn my head toward the sound, but the world spun violently, and I had to stop, my stomach churning. Panic clawed at the edges of my mind, threatening to drag me under. I wasn't sure where I was or who was near me. All I knew was the fear creeping in, insidious and consuming.
"Sabine?" A familiar voice pierced through the haze, quiet but full of emotion. Owen. His voice pulled me in, steadying me, grounding me like an anchor in a storm.
"Owen?" I croaked, my throat dry and raw, the word barely escaping my lips. It felt foreign, like speaking for the first time after an eternity of silence.
The sound of movement reached me, muted but purposeful. I felt the shift in the air as he appeared beside me, his hand brushing over mine, his touch gentle but firm, radiating warmth. His presence chased away the edges of my panic, quiet reassurance seeping into the cracks of my fear.
"You're awake," Owen's voice was strained with relief, the tension beneath his words unmistakable. "Thank the gods."
I tried to focus on him, but my mind was still in pieces, fragmented and struggling to catch up. The pain in my side flared as I shifted, a sharp reminder of my fragile state, the weight of exhaustion dragging me back down.
"Where am I?" I whispered, my voice raspier and weaker than I remembered.
"You're safe," Owen replied, his voice steady though I could hear the tremor beneath it, the vulnerability he rarely showed. "We're in the pack's medical facility. You've been through a lot, Sabine. The rogueâ" He paused, swallowing hard as if forcing himself to continue. "You were badly injured."
I nodded slowly, the remnants of the rogue's attack flickering through my mind like dark flashes of lightning. The image of its viciousness was fresh, vivid. Blood, pain, the terror of being torn apart. A shudder ran through me, but I forced myself to focus. I was alive. That much was clear, even if everything else felt uncertain.
I shifted again, attempting to sit up, but the wave of pain was too much, crashing over me like a tidal wave. I gasped, falling back against the bed, my breath coming in short, shallow bursts.
"Take it easy," Owen urged, gently pressing me back down. "You've been through surgery. You need to rest."
But something didn't sit right. My mind felt off, like a puzzle with missing pieces. As I blinked again, my gaze falling to my arms, I noticed something strange. My pulse quickened as I saw themâdeep, dark markings etched into my skin, tracing intricate patterns over the curves of my forearms. They were familiar, but not in a way I was prepared for. Trembling, I reached for them, my fingers brushing against the symbols, realizing with sudden horror what they meant.
The markings were unmistakable. One was Owen's. The other... was Cole's.
A bolt of shock shot through me, sharp and unrelenting.
"What... what is this?" I whispered, panic rising in my chest like a flood. My breath caught as I realized what it meant. The bond. The mark of the mate.
The weight of the revelation crashed over me, suffocating and inescapable. I hadn't chosen this. I hadn't asked for thisâthis bond, this connection between me and both of them.
San, my wolf, stirred inside me, her voice soft but insistent. It's true, she said, almost comfortingly. They've both claimed you.
"No..." I whispered, my voice quivering with fear and disbelief. I could feel the bond coursing through me, undeniable and unrelenting, tying me to them. But I hadn't wanted this.
Panic surged, relentless and consuming, as the room spun around me. I tried to sit up again, desperate for clarity, but the pain, the pressure in my chest, the weight of the markingsâit was too overwhelming. My vision blurred, the edges darkening, and I felt myself slipping, the void threatening to pull me under once more.
But Owen's hand, warm and steady, held me in place. His grip tightened slightly, anchoring me to the moment, and I blinked, struggling to steady myself.
"I feel... strange," I said quietly, my voice breaking, the words barely audible over the sound of my pounding heart.
Owen's eyes flickered, a storm of emotion passing through them, but he didn't speak right away. He opened his mouth, hesitated, then sighed, his hand tightening around mine, his thumb brushing across my skin in a way that sent a quiet warmth pulsing through me.
"I know," he said finally, his voice soft but resolute, filled with a quiet determination. "But you're going to be alright, Sabine. We'll make sure of it."
I didn't know what he meant by that, but it didn't matter. The uncertainty clouded my thoughtsâwhat had happened? What was happening to me?
"Is Cole here?" I asked, my voice trembling, each word a fragile thread holding me together.
Owen's expression tightened, his jaw clenching briefly before he answered without hesitation.
"Yes. He's waiting outside. But you need to rest."
Cole. The thought of him caused a strange twist in my stomach, a mixture of emotions I couldn't quite untangle. I remembered his presence, his strength, how he had been there with me when I fought the rogue. But now... everything felt different. The bond between the three of us, the connectionâsomething was shifting, something I didn't yet understand.
I swallowed hard, trying to process it all, the weight of the revelations pressing down on me like a storm cloud.
"Will you tell me what's going on?" I whispered, my voice breaking with a mix of confusion, fear, and a desperate need for answers.
Owen's expression darkened at my words, shadows flickering across his face. He took a deep breath, his voice dropping lower as he answered.
"We'll explain everything, Sabine. I promise. But for now, you need to rest. Let us take care of you."
San's voice hummed in the back of my mind, stronger now, filled with a rare giddiness. Finally, she said, her tone brimming with joy. They marked us, Sabine. Do you know what this means? No more running. Everyone will know we belong, that we're claimed. We're finally free to be among them without fear.
Her happiness was infectious, but it also came with a flicker of annoyance. Though, she added with a slight growl, if Owen and Cole keep up their overprotective act, I might have to put them in their place. I don't need them hovering every second.
I felt a hesitant smile tug at the corners of my lips, San's joy breaking through the fog of my uncertainty. Despite the weight of the situation, her reassurance lightened the load, if only slightly. The bond wasn't something I had asked for, but it was something I had to navigate now. And maybe, just maybe, San was right. This could be the beginning of something newâa chance to connect, to belong, and to finally stop running. But before I accept any of this, I demand an explanation for everything.
