Chapter 2: The Chase (Owen POV)

Rogue Mate | ENG923 words~5 min read

The air in the marketplace was alive with noise and motion, but it all faded into the background the moment I caught her scent.

I froze mid-conversation, the words of the beta from the Norwegian pack barely registering. Pine and wildflowers-sharp, fresh, and unlike anything I'd ever encountered before. My wolf stirred, restless and alert, snapping me out of the careful composure I usually maintained during meetings like this.

"Owen?" Marcus, another beta and a trusted ally, gave me a questioning look, his voice barely cutting through the haze in my mind.

"Give me a second," I murmured, already scanning the crowd.

I found her almost immediately.

She stood at the edge of the square, half-hidden behind a weathered fence. Blonde hair framed her face, glowing in the sunlight like threads of gold, and her wide blue eyes locked onto mine with a mix of defiance and fear. Time seemed to stall, and everything else-the crowd, the noise, the responsibilities that usually weighed so heavily on me-disappeared.

She was stunning, yes, but that wasn't what rooted me in place. It was the pull, that undeniable force that made my wolf snarl in recognition.

Mate.

The word echoed in my head, bringing with it a rush of emotions I wasn't prepared for. Relief. Awe. And something far deeper-something primal.

Her eyes widened as if she felt it too. I took a step forward, my heart pounding in my chest. "Wait," I called, my voice firm but careful. I didn't want to scare her off, though the fear already etched in her expression told me I was too late for that.

Before I could get closer, she bolted.

"Shit."

I didn't hesitate. I pushed through the crowd, ignoring the startled looks and protests of the humans around me. The other betas called after me, their confusion evident, but I couldn't stop. My focus narrowed to one thing-her.

She was fast, weaving through the marketplace with a rogue's practiced ease. I caught glimpses of her-blonde hair flashing in the sunlight, the quick dart of her movements as she slipped between stalls.

"Stop!" I shouted, trying to keep my tone steady, calm, but she didn't so much as glance back.

I could feel her panic like a tangible thing, a sharp spike in the air that only drove me harder. My wolf growled in frustration, urging me to catch her, to close the distance before she disappeared completely.

"Please, stop! I just want to talk!"

It wasn't a lie. I didn't know who she was or where she'd come from, but the mate bond demanded answers, demanded connection. Letting her slip away wasn't an option.

She darted into an alley, and I followed without hesitation. The space narrowed, the scent of damp stone and old wood mingling with hers. It was intoxicating, pulling me forward even as the logical part of my mind screamed at me to slow down, to think this through.

She broke free of the alley, her movements quick and agile as she sprinted toward the edge of town. I pushed myself harder, my breath coming in steady bursts as the forest loomed ahead. She was heading for the tree line, and if she made it, she'd have the advantage.

The moment she disappeared into the shadows of the trees, I knew I'd lost her.

"Damn it!" I skidded to a halt at the edge of the forest, my chest heaving. Her scent lingered, faint but unmistakable, a taunting reminder of how close I'd been.

I took a few cautious steps into the woods, listening intently, but the forest was silent save for the soft rustle of leaves in the breeze. She was gone.

My wolf snarled in frustration, pacing restlessly in my mind. I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to steady the bond that now thrummed with a maddening intensity. She wasn't far-I could feel it, like a faint tug in the back of my mind.

"Who was she?" I muttered to myself, the question hanging heavy in the air. A rogue, clearly. There was no mistaking the wildness in her scent, the untamed edge that marked her as one of the wolves who lived outside pack law.

But she was my mate.

The realization hit again, just as sharp as the first time. It wasn't supposed to be possible. Rogues didn't get mates. At least, that's what everyone always said. And even if they did, what were the odds that I, the beta of one of the largest packs in Europe, would be bonded to someone like her?

I ran a hand through my hair, frustration and disbelief warring within me. The timing couldn't have been worse. The meeting I'd left behind had been weeks in the making, a rare gathering of betas from neighboring packs to discuss rogue activity along the borders. My disappearance would raise questions, and I'd have to deal with the fallout soon enough.

But none of it mattered as much as finding her.

I turned back toward the town, my mind already racing with plans. Her scent was still fresh, and the bond's pull hadn't faded. She was nearby. I just had to figure out where she was hiding.

I wouldn't stop until I found her.
