The wind howled through the trees as I pushed myself deeper into the forest. The cold bit into my skin, but it was nothing compared to the icy grip in my chest. I had to get away. Away from Owen. Away from everything that had just happened. His words, his promises, they were tangled in my mind like a knot I couldn't undo.
"Sabine," he had said. "You're safe with me. I promise."
I had wanted to believe him. I had wanted to trust that the way his eyes softened when he looked at me wasn't just the lingering effect of his Beta bond. But now, after everything I had overheard, after hearing the cruel words spoken by members of his pack, my heart had shattered into a thousand pieces. Was I just another rogue to them? Another thing to be hunted and eliminated?
"We need to move faster," San growled in my mind. "You're not safe here. We need to keep going."
"I know," I whispered, my voice barely audible in the biting wind. My wolf's urgency matched my own, and yet, despite everything, my legs felt heavy. My body moved, but my mind was caught in a storm. How could I trust Owen, when the scent of his packâhis Alphaâlingered so strongly in my memory?
I kept moving, deeper into the shadows of the trees, hoping to lose the scent of the patrols that I could feel circling, searching for me. I had no idea how far I was from the cabin, from Owen, but I couldn't go back. I couldn't face him, not after what I'd heard.
The forest felt suffocating, the trees closing in on me. And then, suddenly, the scent hit me.
Wolves.
More of them. I could feel them moving through the woods, their bodies light and fast, but it was the scent that gave them awayâfamiliar. Owen's pack. And there, at the edges of my senses, I could hear the crunch of dry leaves beneath their paws. Too many. I was surrounded.
I froze. My heart thudded painfully in my chest.
"San," I whispered, my voice trembling. "What do I do? What if they find me?"
"You can't fight them, Sabine. Not like this. We need to get out of here. Run."
I didn't need San to tell me that. My instincts were screaming the same thing. But before I could take another step, a heavy weight landed on my back, throwing me to the ground with a force that knocked the wind from my lungs.
A growl rumbled in the air, closeâtoo close. "Gotcha."
My body reacted before my mind could catch up. I twisted beneath the wolf, kicking out with my legs, but his grip was like iron. He was strong. Too strong. I could feel the heat of his breath against my neck as he held me in place, the scent of his pack flooding my senses.
"Let go!" I snarled, struggling against him, but he didn't budge. Instead, he pressed his nose against my neck, sniffing deeply.
"Rogue," the wolf murmured, almost to himself. "Beta's scent all over you."
A chill shot down my spine at the mention of Owen, and I could see in the wolf's eyes that he knew who I wasâknew I was tied to Owen somehow.
Suddenly, the sound of approaching footsteps reached my ears, followed by the unmistakable voice of Owen himself.
"What's going on here?" he demanded.
The patrol wolf holding me didn't let go. "She's a rogue, Beta. Caught her trying to run."
Owen's gaze snapped to me, a mix of frustration and something softerâconcern, maybe? He stepped forward, his body radiating authority. "Let her go," he ordered.
The patrol wolf hesitated but obeyed, releasing his grip on me. I scrambled to my feet, my breath coming in sharp, frantic gasps. But before I could move away, another figure appeared. A tall, broad-shouldered wolf emerged from the shadows, his presence commanding.
Cole.
The Alpha.
His eyes landed on me, cold and calculating, studying me with a gaze that felt like it was weighing me, measuring me in a way that made my stomach twist. The air seemed to freeze.
"What's this about?" Cole asked, his voice a low rumble that made my muscles tense.
Owen spoke first. "She's my mate," he said, voice tight. "She's the one I told you about, the one I was talking to earlier! She just came by, we were talking, and now she was about to leave. She doesn't feel safe here. And finally she's not a threat."
Cole's eyes flickered to Owen, then to me. For a moment, the world seemed to hang in the balance, and then the Alpha's lips curled into a slight smirk.
"Your mate?" Cole repeated, as if savoring the word. "She's more than that, Owen."
Owen's posture shifted slightly, his brows furrowing in confusion. "What are you talking about?" His eyes locked onto Cole's, but there was something in the Alpha's gaze that made my heart stop.
Cole's expression turned serious as he looked at me, his voice lowering. "You didn't think it was a coincidence, did you?" His words cut through the tension in the air like a blade. "You're not just Owen's mate, Sabine. You're mine too."
I blinked, my heart skipping a beat. "What? What do you mean?"
"You're bonded to both of us," Cole said calmly, as if discussing the weather. "I felt the pull the moment I saw you. The connection. It's not just Owen who shares this bond with you. It's me too."
The words hung in the air like a dark cloud, suffocating any thought I had. I couldn't breathe. My body froze, but inside, a storm raged. This was impossible. It was too much.
"Wait... What?" I gasped, shaking my head. "Iâno. You can't be serious."
"Oh, I'm very serious," Cole said, his gaze unwavering. "You're not just the Beta's mate. You're mine as well."
I stumbled back, my mind a whirlwind of confusion, disbelief, and fear. How could this be happening? Was this even real? The connection between mates was supposed to be something special, something powerful. But now... now I was being told that I was bound to two wolves. Two leaders of the same pack.
"No," I whispered, shaking my head. "I didn't choose this. I don't want this."
Owen stepped closer, his voice soft but firm. "Sabine, I swear, this doesn't change anything. We'll figure this out. You're safe with me. With us."
The words were a comfort, but they didn't quell the panic rising in my chest. What if it wasn't enough?
"You're safe," Owen repeated, reaching for me. But I stepped back, shaking my head again.
"I can'tâ" My voice cracked, and the weight of it all came crashing down on me.
"I didn't ask for this," I muttered, my eyes darting between them. "I didn't ask for any of this."
Cole's gaze softened, but only slightly. "You don't need to ask for it, Sabine. It's already there. You've felt it, haven't you?"
I didn't answer. I couldn't.
"Look at me," Owen said, his voice steady, but I could see the strain in his eyes. "You're not alone in this. You don't have to make any decisions right now. But you don't have to run, either. You're ours. You're both of ours."
The weight of the words sank into me, and I couldn't breathe. The bond, the truthâit was all too much. Too much to process.
I stared at both of them, my heart torn in two. My mind raced, and I felt my world tilting on its axis. I had been alone for so long, but now, I was caught between two wolves, two worlds, two futures.
And the worst part? I had no idea what came next.
