Trail 63 (Pt. 2) A Meeting of Mentors, Apprentices, And Family
--- Jon Whitaker ---
âMinnie, I'm kidnapping your son!â Miss Edna informed his mother once they got back to their apartment building.
âSure, have fun or whatever.â His ma dismissed his other parent as she went inside while the two of them remained outside.
âUh, so⦠what are we doing?â He asked as Miss Edna grabbed his shoulder.
âHold still for a second.â The elder Arcane told him as he felt a cool warmth begin to spread through his shoulder.
A moment later he felt reality shift -(the man in the mask waved in passing)- before finding himself in a new place with Miss Edna clutching her head.
âUgh, forgot why I donât just teleport you everywhere.â His mentor groaned, her eyes clenched shut.
âAre you okay?â He frowned with no small amount of concern.
âYeah, Iâm fine.â Miss Edna assured him, even as she checked her nose for any bleeding. âSee no blood, no foul.â
He made a keening sort of sound, not really believing her.
âLook, you're not the only one with Madness exposure. Mem, my old teach, was dripping in even more Madness than you are.â His second parent sighed before giving him a soft smile. âA quick detour through the Black Briar isnât going to hurt me when he regularly dragged me to tea time with the Cheshire.â
When that didnât seem reassured, Miss Edna rolled her eyes as she grabbed him by the shoulders and spun him around. âLook none of that matters, what matters is that I have found us a place to practice magic while your mom is still home!â
âThe Witchâs Wares?â He blinked looking at the familiar store.
âYeah, the owner and I go way back. May-may wonât mind if we borrow her place for a bit.â Miss Edna grinned mischievously.
He couldnât help but narrow his eyes, having known that look since she first taught him how to steal cookies from the camp counselorâs jar. (Well she told me where it was anyway.) âWhy do I get the feeling you didnât ask Ms. Delacroix if we could come here?â
âOh, I told her Iâd be stopping by and bringing you.â Miss Edna promised, not losing her grin for a second. âBy the way this might be turning into a whole âwhoâs the better teacher' thing.â
âWhat?â He frowned.
âIâm here bitch!â His second mother shouted as she kicked the door open and dragged him into the store, the second sudden spatial shift setting him on edge.
âEdnaâ¦â Ms. Delacroix sighed looking like someone far too used to this kind of behavior from where she sat at the counter having tea with an affronted Artemis. âSo lovely to see youâ¦â
Miss Edna looked at Artemis with a considering look. âThis is your apprentice, Artemis, right?â
âYes.â Ms. Delacroix confirmed before looking over the counter where he sat on the floor after being dragged inside by his wrist at a magical speed. âIâm assuming this is⦠Jon?â The shopkeeper blinked, sounding surprised for the first time.
âJon?!â Artemis repeated, sounding just as surprised to find him there.
âHey.â He waved, deciding it was best to just roll with this for now.
âJon is your apprentice?â Ms. Delacroix asked, before blinking as she realized something. âJon is your son John?â
âYep.â Miss Edna nodded, before pulling him back to his feet. âAnd youâve already met everyone here, you really do get around, kid.â
âI like to explore.â He shrugged as he dusted himself off.
Ms. Delacroix looked notably more frazzled than when she thought she was just dealing with Miss Edna. âIf Iâd known you were bringing him with you I wouldâve made sure Sam and Noah were here.â
He gave the shopkeeper a tilt of his head. âUh, Iâve already met them, remember?â
âI know but⦠I, I didnât realize you were Eddieâs John!â Ms. Delacroix tried to explain as she adjusted her glasses. âIf I did⦠Oh, the cooking club wasnât how I wanted us to meet!â
âMiss Edme?â Artemis interrupted, looking a little worried about how out of sorts her mentor was.
âHa, she does that too?â His second parent laughed. âHavenât been able to get Jon to call me anything but âMiss Ednaâ since he was like eight.â
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
âWho is this woman?â Artemis asked, looking like she wasnât going to put up with Miss Ednaâs usual mischief.
âArtemis Iâm sure Iâve told you about Edna at some point.â Ms. Delacroix frowned at her apprentice.
âOoh, bet Jon can figure it out first.â Miss Edna grinned throwing an arm over Ms. Delacroixâs shoulder.
The other Arcane gave his second parent a dry look. âEddie, do you have to turn everything into a whole spectacle?â
âYes.â Miss Edna bluntly answered without an ounce of shame or guilt.
âIf youâd just told me you were bringing⦠Jon, I wouldâve properly introduced myself.â Ms. Delacroix scolded the other woman as she tried to wiggle out of the half-hug.
âNo, you wouldâve put you wouldâve given him the cool and serious âEdme Delacroix, The Black Ravenâ rather than the uncool and ditzy âMay-may, the nerdâ.â Miss Edna argued before poking Ms. Delacroix in the cheek. âI wanted him to know the real you, not the fake you that takes like two years to get past. Best way to do that, catch you off guard.â
Ms. Delacroix glared at Miss Edna as she swatted the other Arcaneâs hand away. âYou didnât do this to get the real me, you did this to mess with me.â
âEh, I can do both.â Miss Edna shrugged as she let Ms. Delacroix go. âGot to make sure you donât get a big head from being a big shot in the Arcane Association. I mean you remember how you got when you got that job at the university.â
âI was trying to present the image of a competent and confident instructor instead of the overconfident hot mess that I was working with.â Ms. Delacroix frowned.
Miss Edna snapped her fingers as she winked. âUnderline the hot in that mess.â
âFor magicâs sake, are you ever going to grow up?â Ms. Delacroix pinched the bridge of her nose.
âNever.â Miss Edna admitted, sounding like she relished in the other womanâs frustrations, something that heâd sometimes seen when dealing with kids at the camp. Though it was more common between-
He blinked as it clicked.
âYouâre sisters.â
âSisters?â Artemis repeated looking at him in confusion before her eyes went wide as she turned back to the elder Arcane. âYouâre sisters!â
âHa, called it! My kid is smarter than yours!â Miss Edna cheered, before dragging him into a half hug.
âThis does not mean that Jon is smarter than Artemis, it just means that theyâve⦠their own areas of expertise.â Ms. Delacroix argued, pulling her own apprentice to her side. âFor instance⦠Iâm sure that Artemisâs book smarts far surpass Jonâs!â
âHeâs an A student!â Miss Edna pointed out.
âUh, no Iâm notâ¦â He admitted. âRemember you taught me to count my grades since grades donât matter as long as you graduate and arenât worth stressing over. The Aâs Iâve still got are because I like those classes.â
âHow are you going to get into a good college if you skimp on your grades?â Artemis asked, looking disturbed at the very idea.
âPractical experience?â He shrugged. âI mean the way I see it Iâm probably going to be a teacher, a cop, or go into pediatrics, and uh, Iâm already great with kids, minimize how much my Ma traumatizes the other cops, and can stitch a severed arm back on with one hand.â Admittedly he needed Pixâs help to do that last one, (but I can still do it.)
For some reason everyone stared at him when he said that.
âWhat?â
âEvery other time I talk to you terrifies me.â Artemis told him with a concerned look.
âYou get used to it.â Miss Edna assured her. âStill to not so subtly change the subject, youâre May-mayâs adopt-a-daughter, right?â
âI-Iâm her apprentice.â Artemis corrected as her cheeks gained a bit of color.
Miss Edna raised a brow. âYeah, and?â
âI have a mom?â Artemis more asked than said as her face grew redder.
âYeah, and?â Miss Edna repeated. âHell, if youâve got a dad too then this might just be a repeat of in college when-â
âThat was you and Sam!â Ms. Delacroix suddenly shouted.
Miss Edna gave her sister a look.
âIt was you and Sam.â Ms. Delacroix reiterated through grit teeth.
âUh-huh.â Miss Edna nodded, before leaning towards Artemis and whispering, âDonât leave her alone with your parents.â
âEdna!â
âEdme!â
âWhat⦠what is the point of this conversation?!â Artemis practically screamed, looking like she was just a few words from dying of mortification.
âOh, right. Well, since Samantha and Noah arenât here, and May-may talks about you like she does them, that means youâre technically my niece.â Miss Edna explained, before putting a hand on his back and pushing him forward. âWhich means you and Jon are cousins.â
He and Artemis stared at each other.
âAnd speaking of meeting a niece and or nephew for the first timeâ¦â Miss Edna trailed off with that mischievous glint to her eyes once more.
âWhat?â Ms. Delacroix (or is it Aunt Edme now?) asked, recognizing and not trusting Miss Ednaâs look for a moment as she immediately went on the defensive.
âYou see me and Minnie agreed to split custody of Jon when he was like twelve, so that means that for all intents and purposes youâve missed five years worth of christmases and birthday presents.â Miss Edna grinned.
âOh you b- Is this all a scam to rob my store?!â (Maybe just Miss Edme?) scoffed. âYouâve got your own store in Blackwell, if you want to give your son presents, get them from your own!â
âAh, but those wouldnât be gifts from his dear aunty May-may, and besides⦠itâs more fun to steal your stuff.â Miss Edna confessed, swiping something particularly shiny off of the counter.
âHey, youâre paying for that!â
âNo Iâm not!â
As the two sisters continued to bicker with each other, he and Artemis continued to stare at each other neither fully sure what to say to the other.
(So⦠this is a thingâ¦)
